Sci 9 1st Week

The document is a science worksheet about the circulatory system from the Sta. Cruz Learning Center in the Philippines. It contains information about the three major parts of the circulatory system - the heart, blood vessels, and blood. It describes their roles and basic functions, including how the heart pumps blood through arteries and veins to circulate oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and remove waste throughout the body. The worksheet includes exercises for students to label a diagram of the heart and blood vessels, and answer short assessment questions to test their understanding.

Science 9
Learning Activity Worksheet No. 1
1st Quarter Week No. 1 Date: August 25-28, 2020

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of…

1. How the different structures of the circulatory and respiratory systems work
together to transport oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the different parts of the body
2. The prevention, detection, and treatment of diseases affecting the circulatory and
respiratory systems
Performance Standard: Conduct an information dissemination activity on effective ways of
taking care of the respiratory and circulatory systems based on data gathered from the school
or local health workers
Learning Competency: Explain how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to
transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body
Code: S9LT-la-b-26
Lesson Focus: Circulatory System
Introduction:
The circulatory system carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells, and removes
waste products, like carbon dioxide. These roadways travel in one direction only, to keep
things going where they should.
The following are the three MAJOR PARTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM with their roles:
1. Heart - pumps blood around the body.
2. Blood vessels- carries the blood throughout the body
 Arteries- carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the cells, tissues, and organs
of the body
 Veins- carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
 Capillaries- the smallest blood vessels in the body, connecting the smallest arteries to
the smallest veins
-the actual site where gases and nutrients are exchanged

3. Blood- carries the materials throughout the body

Basic Functions
BLOOD
The medium for the transport of gases, nutrients, and waste materials to and from all body
tissues.
Blood consists of:
 Red blood cells (Erythrocytes) - to carry oxygen
 White blood cells (Leucocytes)- that make up part of the immune system
 Platelets (Thrombocytes) - needed for blood clotting
 Plasma - blood cells, nutrients, and wastes float in this liquid

There are 4 main blood groups (TYPES OF BLOOD) - A, B, AB, and O.

O-blood is a “universal donor” and AB+ blood is known as the “universal recipient”.
The HUMAN HEART
The heart pumps blood around the body. It sits inside the chest, in front of the lungs and
slightly to the left side. The heart is actually a double pump made up of four chambers, with
the flow of blood going in one direction due to the presence of the heart valves. The
contractions of the chambers make the sound of heartbeats.
The right side of the heart
The right upper chamber (atrium) takes in deoxygenated blood that is loaded with carbon
dioxide. The blood is squeezed down into the right lower chamber (ventricle) and taken by an
artery to the lungs where the carbon dioxide is replaced with oxygen.
The left side of the heart
The oxygenated blood travels back to the heart, this time entering the left upper chamber
(atrium). It is pumped into the left lower chamber (ventricle) and then into the aorta (an
artery). The blood starts its journey around the body once more

BLOOD VESSELS
Blood vessels have a range of different sizes and structures, depending on their role in the
body. The three TYPES OF BLOOD VESSELS are:
Arteries
Oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart along arteries, which are muscular. Arteries
divide like tree branches until they are slender. The largest artery is the aorta, which
connects to the heart and picks up oxygenated blood from the left ventricle. The only artery
that picks up deoxygenated blood is the pulmonary artery, which runs between the heart and
lungs.
Capillaries
The arteries eventually divide down into the smallest blood vessel, the capillary. Capillaries
are so small that blood cells can only move through them one at a time. Oxygen and food
nutrients pass from these capillaries to the cells.
Capillaries are also connected to veins, so wastes from the cells can be transferred to the
blood.
Veins
Veins have one-way valves instead of muscles, to stop blood from running back the wrong
way. Generally, veins carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart, where it can be
sent to the lungs. The exception is the network of pulmonary veins, which take oxygenated
blood from the lungs to the heart.

Blood pressure
Blood pressure refers to the amount of pressure inside the circulatory system as the blood is
pumped around.

the graphic organizer.

1. Shade the right side of the heart “blue” to show deoxygenated blood. Remember the right
side of the heart is on your left as you look at the diagram.
2. Shade in the left side of the heart “red” to show the blood is oxygenated on this side.
3. Draw arrows on the diagram to show the flow of blood through both sides.
