BLOOD VESSELS
Blood vessels have a range of different sizes and structures, depending on their role in the
body. The three TYPES OF BLOOD VESSELS are:
Arteries
Oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart along arteries, which are muscular. Arteries
divide like tree branches until they are slender. The largest artery is the aorta, which
connects to the heart and picks up oxygenated blood from the left ventricle. The only artery
that picks up deoxygenated blood is the pulmonary artery, which runs between the heart and
lungs.
Capillaries
The arteries eventually divide down into the smallest blood vessel, the capillary. Capillaries
are so small that blood cells can only move through them one at a time. Oxygen and food
nutrients pass from these capillaries to the cells.
Capillaries are also connected to veins, so wastes from the cells can be transferred to the
blood.
Veins
Veins have one-way valves instead of muscles, to stop blood from running back the wrong
way. Generally, veins carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart, where it can be
sent to the lungs. The exception is the network of pulmonary veins, which take oxygenated
blood from the lungs to the heart.
Blood pressure
Blood pressure refers to the amount of pressure inside the circulatory system as the blood is
pumped around.

1. Shade the right side of the heart “blue” to show deoxygenated blood. Remember the right
side of the heart is on your left as you look at the diagram.
2. Shade in the left side of the heart “red” to show the blood is oxygenated on this side.
3. Draw arrows on the diagram to show the flow of blood through both sides.
1. B. Instruction: Match the terms to the definitions on the right. Place the correct letter to the
left of each number.
F 1. Plasma A. This blood type can accept blood from all other blood types.
K 2. Water B. The pump portion of the heart.
E3. Arteries C. Elastic vessels that transport blood to the heart.
B 4. Ventricles D. This separates the heart into two sides.
J 5. Platelets E. Semi-elastic vessels that transport blood away from the heart.
H 6. O F. This is the watery portion of the blood.
L 7. Aorta H. This blood type can donate blood to all other blood types.
A 8. AB I. Makes a large number of abnormal white blood cells.
C 9. Veins J. Helps the blood clot.
D 10. Septum K. 78% of the blood consists of this.
L. The largest artery which connects to the heart
