Assignment 1 CCB31202 SEPARATION PROCESSES 2

The document describes an assignment involving multiple-effect evaporators. It asks the student to: 1) Explain the two types of multiple-effect evaporator and draw diagrams of both types. 2) Calculate the boiling point in each evaporator of a triple-effect system given input conditions. 3) Determine the surface area and steam rate needed for a triple-effect evaporator concentrating a sugar solution given input conditions.

CCB31202 SEPARATION PROCESSES 2

ASSIGNMENT 1 (5%)

Mulple-effect evaporators have been widely used in sugar industries to increase juice concentraon
(i.e., 15% to 17%) by removing a specified amount of water by evaporaon. Figure 1 shows the typical
mulple-effect evaporator.

Figure 1: The typical mulple effect evaporator

(1) Explain the two types of mulple-effect evaporator.

(2) Draw the complete diagram for both type of mulple-effect evaporator in (1)
(10 marks)
(3) A soluon with a negligible boiling-point rise is being evaporated in a triple-effect evaporator
using saturated steam at 121°C. The pressure in the vapor of the last effect is 25.6kPa abs.
Esmate the boiling point in each of the evaporators. Assume areas are equal. The heat-
transfer coefficients are as follows:

U1 = 2840 W/m2.K

U1 = 1987 W/m2.K

U1 = 1400 W/m2.K

(4) A triple-effect evaporator with forward feed is used in industry to concentrate a sugar soluon
from 7 wt% solids to 30% solids with negligible boiling-point rise. Saturated steam at 200 kPa
is supplied to the system. Given the pressure in the vapor space of the third effect is 15kPa.
The feed rate is 23000 kg/h and the temperature of the feed is 300K. The liquid heat capacity
is cp = 4.19 – 2.35x, where cp is in kJ/kg.K and x in wt fracon. Determine the surface area of
each effect if each effect has the same area, and the steam rate. The heat-transfer coefficients
are as follows:

U1 = 3123 W/m2.K

U1 = 1987 W/m2.K
U1 = 1136 W/m2.K
