THE EFFECTIVENESS BETWEEN FILIPINO AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ON

DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS OF 12 STEM STUDENTS OF DRECMNHS

Background of the study

Filipino is the national language of the Philippines – which is in practice, almost

completely composed of the Tagalog language being spoken in the capital Manila

(Tropical Experience Travel Services, 2013-2023). Today, English is constitutionally

named as one of the Philippines’ official languages, and it continues to be an integral

part of local life and culture (Oxford University Press, 2023). The study aims to assess

the effectiveness between filipino and english language on developing writing skills of

senior high school students.

According to SkillsYouNeed.com (2011-2023), writing skills are an important part

of communication.  Good writing skills allow you to communicate your message with

clarity and ease to a far larger audience than through face-to-face or telephone

conversations. In writing there are several areas to consider the correct grammar,

punctuation and spelling to help to decide on a suitable structure and provides guides

for specific pieces of writing that you may need to produce, whether at school,

university, or in the workplace.

According to Saadvedra (2020), there are five factors that language teachers

considered to have influenced the poor English and Filipino writing skills of students.
Based on their experiences and observations while teaching writing to the student’s, the

following was recorded:  the difficulty in spelling, grammar and sentence construction

are the reasons why many students have poor writing skills in English and Filipino, lack

of vocabulary, difficulty in conveying and organizing ideas, pupils’ perception that

writing is a hard task and lack of motivation and interest in writing.

Despite the effort of teachers, they acknowledged that students writing skills still

did not meet the standard in writing. That is why they are optimistic that following the

K to 12 curricula will pave the way for improving the writing skills of the pupils, which

has long been deteriorating. It is also an interesting point that curriculum planners,

especially the language specialist, should look to help students improve their writing

skills in second language eventually.

In essence, the purpose of the research is to assess the effectiveness between

filipino and english language on developing writing skills of 12 stem students.
