TASK 1: Look at the below sentences and try to decide what type of word the bold word is. You
don’t need to understand the word’s meaning.

3. How do you know what kind of words these are? What are the important words in the

TASK 2: Story: A modern monster.

A few years ago, I had a scary experience. It was the evening and I had returned to my house after
gathering mushrooms with a friend of mine who is a contemporary writer – I had collected lots of
them and I was happy. I was very thirsty, so as soon as I got home, my priority was water. I was in
the kitchen when I encountered the creature. I
heard a sound but I couldn’t find the source of
the noise – I didn’t know where it was coming
from! Then I saw a long tail. I couldn’t see what
species it was, but it looked like a dinosaur!
Dinosaurs have been extinct for a long time and
they lived outside, so my kitchen isn’t their
natural habitat.

4. I care about my welfare so I ran to save

myself and my health. I ran into the bedroom to seek shelter, I was looking for a safe place from this
animal that wanted to hurt me! My enemy tried to follow me. It was an American crocodile! There
are very few American crocodiles alive nowadays, they are endangered, but it looked like a dinosaur!
This wild creature wasn’t a pet so it was important –vital!- to stay away from it. It was also crucial
not to hurt it because endangered species will become extinct if we kill them all. I called the police
and after 25 minutes, a substantial amount of time when I was standing scared in my bedroom!
Then the police can to rescue me. I was finally safe! Except for when I fell in the river last year, I have
never been so scared but that is a story for another day!

TALENT
Most people regard Steffi Graf and Serena Williams as truly outstanding tennis players. That so many
people see them as special isn’t surprising, they have
distinguished themselves by the quality of their tennis.
They both took up tennis at the age of three, and their
trainers and coaches saw that they could be great. The
coaches saw their potential to succeed because they
worked hard or because they had natural skill because of
their parents, in their DNA, or genes.

Most tennis matches consist of running a lot and powerful hitting

of the ball. The average distance a tennis player runs is nearly 4km.
You must also have good aim so you can distribute the ball to lots
of different parts of the court to defeat your opponent. This means
that to be really brilliant at tennis you need to save energy and
strength during the matches. Being efficient isn’t enough though;
you also need to be athletic and powerful too.

They have both occupied the No1 position for more than 300 weeks and won 22 grand slam
tournaments in tennis. No other players in history have won so many grand slam victories in
women’s, or men’s, tennis. Both players had to suspend their tennis careers because they were
injured or hurt, but they recovered so that they could play again. Graf’s career started in 1982 and
finished in 1999 but Serena has been playing professionally since 1995 and hasn’t finished yet.
Although Williams has had a longer career than Graff, she has won proportionally more Grand Slam
tournaments; Graf played in 31 tournaments and Williams played in 28 but they have both won 22.

Even though Williams is at the end of her career, she has been playing brilliantly and the crowds are
still cheering for her so maybe she has the potential to beat Graff before her career has finished.

THE BILGI NEWS

CLASS PRESIDENT RESIGNS!
Last night class president, Didem Gurel, said that she was quitting her role because she thought the
class exams were too tough and tricky. She said these difficult and
awkward tests were too rigorous, there were too many serious and
detailed tests, and their teacher was too strict. ‘Our teacher used to
enforce every rule and law 100% - it was crazy!’ said Didem last night.
She also said that the teacher would punish the students by forcing
them to do more work when they misbehaved.

“We didn’t have any choice, if we were bad, our teacher would make
us do more work, even if we didn’t want to,” complained one of the
students. Some students said the teacher was completely destroying
and breaking their lives. The teacher, Emre Balik, said that he didn’t wreck anyone’s life and that the
rules were straightforward - simple and easy to follow. He also said students were supposed to follow
the rules and he thought that the implication that students could break the rules was terrible.
Expecting that rules will be followed has been a problem at Bilgi before, but Ms Gurel said that she
although this was a testing time, the class would have to go through the actions of choosing a new

Sagrada Familia
Sagrada Familia is a truly breathtaking building, it is amazingly beautiful, you
can see it in the Catalonian region of
Spain. Catalonia is the part of Spain
where Barcelona is. What is so very
surprising about this building is how long
Inside Sagarada
it is taking to build it. The Spanish have Familia
been working on this astonishing
construction since 1882 and they will
have finished it by 2026. It was designed
Sagrada Familia Today by Antoni Gaudi but they had only
finished a quarter of it when he died in 1926. One of the reasons it is taking so
long is because they have to work on the new parts of the building and stop the
old parts from becoming worse and breaking. Stopping the old parts from
deteriorating means they must concentrate
on preservation as well as construction.

Another reason why the building is taking so

long is the amazingly elaborate details that are all over the building.
As almost every part of the building is covered in these complicated
designs nothing looks dull or boring anywhere in the building.

There have also been several wars and problems during its
construction, like the Spanish Civil war in 1936 – although when the
war finished they managed to revive interest in the building. While
a minority of people in Barcelona think the building is too expensive
and taking too long, it is widely regarded as a good thing for

MOVING FROM THE CITY TO THE COUNTRY

go to the countryside, will completely change my life even though I will make an equivalent amount
of money living there. I hope that the move from an urban place to a rural place will transform how
I live even though the amount of money I make will be the same.

Many people claim that becoming a resident of

the countryside will ensure that I have less stress
and problems – That I will be happier. There are
many reasons people say that this is true; that
officially living in the countryside will guarantee,
or make it certain, that I will be happier.

If you calculate the stress and problems of living in

a city, things like crowds and congestion, I believe
moving to the country will be a great release. Counting and
measuring the problems of things like traffic jams is difficult
but I still think that the feeling of being free will be a big
difference.

I already feel that when I return to the city, it captures me and

that when I finally live in the countryside I’ll be free.

I will miss my friends and I’m worried about their reaction when I tell them I’m going to leave, so I’m
going to tell them one at a time. I don’t want to broadcast the news that I’m leaving on Facebook –
like a news report because how they feel and what they do as a result of the news is important to
me.

Task 1 - Read the text and answer the questions. Remember you don’t need to understand all the
words to see if you can get the main ideas.

1. Does the writer think that moving to the country will be better or worse than living in the city?
_______________________________________________________________________________
2. What doesn’t the writer like about living in the city?
_______________________________________________________________________________
3. What is the writer worried about?
_______________________________________________________________________________
4. What word has the opposite meaning to ‘Urban’?
143
_______________________________________________________________________________
5. What word has the opposite meaning to ‘Release?’
_______________________________________________________________________________

Task 2 – All the bold words have a meaning you can find in the text. Look carefully around the
words and at the underlined expressions.

PART 1

I recently decided to permanently abandon living in the city. I think that leaving the city forever, to
go to the countryside, will completely change my life even though I should make an equivalent
amount of money living there too. I hope that the move from an urban place to a rural place will
transform how I live even though the amount of money I make will be the same.

1. Permanently a) the same (Equal in value, amount or action)

2. Abandon b) completely change (Change from one thing to another.)
3. Equivalent c) the city (Places with concrete and many buildings)
4. Urban d) the countryside (Green places with less people)
5. Rural e) leaving (Leave something without care)
6. Transform f) forever (Something that can’t be changed)

PART 2

Many people claim that becoming a resident of the countryside will ensure that I have less stress and
problems – That I will be happier. There are many reasons people say that this is true; that officially
living in the countryside will guarantee, or make it certain, that I will be happier.

1. Claim a) say… this is true (say something, maybe right maybe wrong)
2. Resident b) make it certain (100% it will happen or be done)
3. Ensure c) officially living (a person living somewhere legally)

PART 3

If you calculate the stress and problems of living in a city, things like crowds and congestion, I believe
moving to the country will be a great release. Counting and measuring the problems of things like
traffic jams is difficult but I still think that the feeling of being free will be a big difference

1. Calculate a) being free (to free a thing that is not free)

2. Congestion b) counting and measuring (decide using maths or your brain)
3. Release c) traffic jams (when something is blocked and can’t move)

PART 4

I already feel that when I return to the city, it captures me and I’m not free anymore. I will miss my
friends and I’m worried about their reaction when I tell them I’m going to leave, so I’m going to tell
them one at a time. I don’t want to broadcast the news that I’m leaving on Facebook – like a news

report telling lots of people something, because how they feel and what they do as a result of the
news is important to me

1. Capture a) not free (catch something and remove it’s freedom )

2. Reaction b) how they feel and what they do (showing a response)
3. Broadcast c) telling lots of people (normally on radio or tv)

Task 3A – Pick the correct version of the word under the sentences for both sentences. Not every
word has been changed. Pay attention to the grammar and the word form.

Ex. When I told him the surprising news he ________________ very strangely; I think he knew.

She _____________ really badly whenever I ask her questions about it.

A) reaction B) reacting C) reacts(2) D) reacted(1)

1. I can’t believe how much weight he has lost, it has _________________ his appearance.

6. That road is so ____________________. Everyone travels so slowly.

That city is full of _____________________. No one can get anywhere!

A) congest B) congested C) congests D) congestion

145
TASK 3B– Now take the options from the question in task 3 and try to choose the right place for
them. Use the example sentences and the text to help you. E.g.

Tim: Hi Guy, are you OK? You look really pale. You have no colour in your face!

Guy: ‘Kof’ - Not really Tim, I have a cough and I ache all over. AACCHOOooo!

Tim: Bless You, what a sneeze! I could hear you from the hall way. Let’s talk about at that later. Now,

Tim: Of course! It might be a bit difficult to change your plans now. Is there anything else?

Guy: Well I also have a very painful red eye at the moment that I need to do something about; I
desperately want to be free of it, as it looks terrible.

Tim: Yes - it looks painful. It looks like an infection so I’m going to give you some antibiotics to get rid
of it. It is vitally important as, if we don’t cure the infection, it could affect the function of your eye
and that could cause problems with your awareness of the things around you.

knowledge we have right now means that we have a cure for infections. Antibiotics are really
amazing.

Guy: I wonder what it was like before antibiotics, it must have been very different.

Task 1- With a partner look at the picture and answer the question.

1. What is the word for this feeling in English?

2. Can you think of a situation that made you feel like this? Tell your partner about it.
3. What different things can you think of that are regrettable from this year? Or just generally.

Now read the text and answer the questions below.

A Regrettable Situation.
This happened to me a few years ago and I really wish I it hadn’t happened. I was walking down the
street in Şişli when I saw a young man, approximately 17 years old, but he could have been 30. As I
was watching him he fell over. He needed aid so I went over to help him. I took him over to a nearby
café and prepared to tackle the problem. I bought him some water and he then he seemed to be ok.
We got talking and he seemed a bit strange, he was very polite, almost formal, so his good manners
and niceness seemed too much. It was like we were in an official situation not chatting in a café. At
the time I thought he might have been a bit
mentally slow, but now I know that he must
have been clever and that he had planned
everything in advance – before he had even
seen me that day.

So, we were talking, and a lot of the things in

our lives were the same, he lived near me,
also came from London and he mentioned
that he had recently had a new baby. I had
also recently had a baby and it seemed like a
strange coincidence. These uncommonly
similar parts of our lives and the unconnected
nearly impossible chance that we would meet in Şişli should have been a warning. Anyway, then he
showed me a picture of his baby. It was when I took my phone out to show him picture of my baby
that the circumstances because dangerous, the situation changed because of it. Suddenly he
advanced towards me and without warning he pulled my phone out of my hand. Even though I
didn’t have an idea it was going to happen. I still managed to tackle him to the ground but he had a
primitive strength like a gorilla or caveman and he fought me off. Anyway I found out later that he
had been watching me and used my phone steal a lot of money from me. I really shouldn’t have
aided him!

Working as a judge must be an interesting job! They are the people who decide if a suspect is guilty
or not guilty. For example, if a policeman says a person is a thief, that they stole something, that
person will have a trial. In the trial lawyers will advocate, or support one side or the other, and then
a Judge or a jury, a group of normal people, decide if they did the crime. They then use the
legislation of that country to serve justice – they will be released if they did nothing wrong and
punished if they were bad. To do this and decide if someone is guilty they need evidence to prove
that person did the crime When the judge thinks a suspect has committed a crime, like shop-lifting,
burglary or something more serious, like kidnapping someone, then they are sentenced to jail.

TASK 3 BANKING LANGUAGE

There are many skills you need to work with money. Anyone working in Finance will tell you that you
need to be able to calculate and negotiate prices or you will pay too much money. Politely arguing or
discussing the price is a skill in finance just like in the bazaar. If you pay too much money, the
expense could be a problem for your company and you will find it difficult to assure your customers
that it was the correct thing to do. If they aren’t sure you have done the right thing, the cost of doing
business could go up and you could get less for your money. This inflation could be a serious
problem. If you do a good job however then the company could award you a prize or even some
extra money because you did well.

GETTING A JOB THROUGH CHOICE RATHER THAN CHANCE

FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN JOB CHOICE

WAYS OF GETTING INFORMATION ABOUT PROFESSIONS

➔ Now, your teacher will distribute the questions. Answer the following questions using your

6. Take a look at this paragraph. Read it aloud to your partner.

Let’s first consider the people who have the luxury to choose their profession, and see how their
choices affects their lives. If people can choose their jobs, they generally find their jobs satisfying
and rewarding. You may wonder if the jobs that these people have are really perfect.

Now, listen to your teacher read aloud the following sentence: ‘let’s first consider the
people’, or listen to extract (00:55 - 01:20).

Do you notice that a letter disappears?

Let’s firs - consider the people …..

Why has the letter T disappeared? Where did it go? Well, you can say that we threw it in the
trash. This is because good English speakers are very lazy, and we don’t like using our
mouths too much. Sometimes it’s easier to throw away a letter.

Listen to your teacher say the rest of the paragraph. What letters disappear from the words
in bold?

7. Read the sentence aloud to your partner. In the bold words, a letter disappears.

However, the people who choose their jobs can cope with any difficult situations and they feel
satisfied because they are involved in a job that they have chosen. Let’s now consider the
people who get their jobs by chance. These people give little or no thought to their abilities and
desires.

8. Discuss the following questions with a partner:

a. What jobs do your family do?

b. Do your family put pressure on you to pursue a certain job? How do they apply this
pressure?
c. Is it easy to change your career? Do you know anyone who has changed jobs
successfully?
d. Do you know where to go to find career advice at Bilgi?
Have you been able to talk to/observe someone doing the job that you want to do? If
not, would it be possible to?

My maths teacher was a real authoritarian. She had so many rules – she just had to control
every single part of her students’ lives. Us students, though, we were quite rebellious - we
always used to find ways to break her rules. We knew she would discipline us if she saw us,
but we still behaved badly; maybe it was our child-like curiosity – we did it just to see what
would happen. I remember one time, some of us tried to distract the teacher while someone
else stole the exam questions from her desk. She caught us, however, and as expected, our
punishment was severe. Four weeks of after-school detention for everyone!
