PE-V0-415-158-A084 - Civil Design For Thickener & Thickened Sludge Sump-Cat1 PDF

The document derives a formula for calculating the thickness of concrete required to withstand a bending moment. It provides properties of concrete like permissible stress values. It then calculates the modular ratio, effective depth ratio, and percentage of steel reinforcement. Using these values and equations from the Tor steel handbook, it determines the depth of the neutral axis. Finally, it presents the key formula that calculates the required thickness (D) as 169 * square root of the bending moment (M) in tonne-meters.

ANNEXURE-I

Derivartion of Formula for Thickness Calculation

Properties of Concrete:

Permissible stress for Direct Tension,ft = 1.5 N/mm2 Refer Table-1 & 2 of
Tension due to Bending, fct = 2.0 N/mm2 IS:3370-2009, Part 2

Permissible stress for Compression due to 10.0 N/mm2

Bending, fcbc =

2
modular ratio, m = 280/(3*fcbc) = 9.33 mm /N

Effectrive Depth/ Depth (d1/d) = 0.85

Percentage of Steel (p) = 0.282 % (Ref Tab 2.5, Tor Steel Handbook)

Depth of Neutral Axix (n) as per Tor steel Handbook

n= (1+0.00282*0.85*(9.33-1)/ (2+2*0.00282*(9.33-1)

n= 0.51

M/ bd2 =
2
(20/(1-0.51) * (1/3-0.51*(1-0.51)+(0.85-0.51) * (9.33-1) * 0.00282

= 3.502

5
D (reqd) = sqrt (M * 10 /3.502)

= 169 * sqrt (M) Where M is in T-m
