QUESTION 2 - CRITICAL REFLECTIONAL

Before this activities, my students never know about the novel of To Kill a
Mockingbird. As we know, The novel depicts the life of its young narrator Jean Louse
“ Scout ” Finch in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Her father Attitus Finch, is
a smart lawyer with high moral standard. Attitus decides to take up a case involving a
black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused in raping a very poor white girl
named Mayella Ewell. Attitus is sure in his defendant’s innocence but Tom has
almost no chance to be acquitted because the white jury will never believe the black
man more than white man. To teaching a novel was not an easy like a cup of tea, need
to prepared a effective teaching plan so the objective of the learning that day will
achieve the goal.

As I introduce the To Kill a Mockingbird, I take students through an activity to

help them sort their feelings on some of the issues that arise in the text. To begin the
activity, I hang up posters, and I instruct students to watched a video and handout the
synopsis of the story. Once students begin to read To Kill a Mockingbird, they will
engage in deep analysis of the characters as well as the factors that influence who the
characters are and the choices they make. In a sense, they will be analyzing the
characters’ identities. Therefore, to prepare students, it is helpful to start by asking
them to reflect on their own identities as well as the very concept itself

During the activities teaching and learning To Kill a Mockingbird, many

things that we have learned from the novel written by Harper Lee. This is the story of
warmth and humor despite dealing with serious issues which include racial inequality.
This book is read throughout the country in most High Schools as a freshman or
sophomore level book. Literary characters are considered to be "flat" when they are
presented by the author as one-sided and unchanging, behaving in ways that are
predictable. Characters are considered "round" when they are depicted as having
greater complexity and depth, some weaknesses and some strengths, and a wide range
of human emotions

Through the activities finding the characters in the novel of To Kill a

Mockingbird, we have learned that don’t judge a book by its cover. This statement we
can see in the character of Scout the protagonist In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A
Mockingbird learns to not judge someone until one walks a mile in their shoes, and not
to kill mocking birds. What she learns is slowly taught to her by the people around her
and the experiences she has. Before judging someone, try and see things from their
perspective. People are complicated – we are all different and have different desires,
ambitions, values, etc. Learn about their lives and understand that you can never judge
them.  In other words, never judge a book by it’s cover.
Apart that, we also learned to treat everyone equally and with respect. Don’t
act like you’re better than anyone else.  In the end, we’re all the same and all want the
same things in life. Treat everyone with respect no matter their sex, religion, race, etc.
just as Atticus did.
Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’
comp’ny, and don’t you let me  catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so
high and mighty - Atticus

And then, through the activities, we also learned about to fight with your head,
not your fists. Example there are actually two lessons to be learned here – are we
cheating? Firstly, Atticus is teaching Scout that responding to violence with more
violence never achieves anything: two wrongs don’t make a right. And secondly, that
the only way to stop a bully (or an internet troll) is to let what they say slide over you.
Their only aim is to get a reaction, so patience and restraint are your greatest
allies. The characters in To Kill a Mockingbird also teaching us to looking at someone
isn’t seeing them. Atticus’s final words in the novel circle back to the first lesson on
this list and advise us to never jump to conclusions based on appearances. But they
are also a message of hope a reminder that, despite the Bob Ewells of the world,
most people are kind and generous. All you need to do is look closely enough.

Every characters that we have found based on the activities teach us be true to
yourself and stand up for what’s right as the characters of the Attitus. Atticus respects
everyone’s opinion, even those who don’t agree with him, but he makes decisions
about how to act based on his own moral compass. You have to follow your own
moral code, regardless of what others believe.  Atticus has to defend Tom because it’s
the right thing to do, whether or not others agree with him.  He explains that you
should never give up, especially when you’re standing up for what’s right.

They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full

respect for their opinions … but before I  can live with other folks I’ve
got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority
rule is a  person’s conscience
When we read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird in every chapters and
discussed about the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, we feel emotion such as
angry, feel not sacrifice, etc. As a teachers, I will carefully avoided any mention of
race, class, or gender. Like Scout, I learned those lessons from my family. When
Scout comes to her father with questions about human behavior, he doesn’t give her
advice on what to say or do. Instead, he tells her that the “trick” to understanding
another person is to consider things from his or her point of view. We trust students to
wrestle with complex choices in the past and present so that they will better
understand the social mores of our time. We encourage them to think critically and
independently in much the way that Atticus, Scout’s father, engages his children.

To Kill a Mockingbird, like many literary works, includes both language and
topics that require careful consideration from teachers and students. We believe the
best way to prepare to encounter these topics is to create a class contract outlining
guidelines for a respectful, reflective classroom discussion. And for my opinion, what
had happened in the To Kill a Mockingbird still happen in us now days. For example,
from the character of Scout teach us not to judge a book by its cover but today we still
can see people around us like to judge a book by its cover. Based on my experienced
that live in the long house, a few of the ‘ Makcik Bawang ’ they always make a fake
story about the person that they hated without knowing the person closely. It so sad to
seen our people love to judge a cover by its book without knowing the truth.

Beside that, my students also in the end of the learning they able to analyze the
psychological background of the a character from To Kill a Mockingbird and also able
to identify the factors that most significantly impact a character to create a
psychological profile for a characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the
activities, helps my students develop greater understanding of the literary structure
and deepen their understanding of every characters in the To Kill a Mockingbird
through the Characters Chart. Every time their saw a characters in chapter or the
differences personality of the character, they will fill the box in the chart. My students
so happy during the learning activities. We doing a discussion, changing opinion and
role play. We really enjoyed the style of the author wrote for the novel. She was very
detailed and she had a creative use of symbolism. One of the major events in the story
was Tom Robinson trial, and Tom Robinson represented the Mockingbird in the story.
The importance real bravery is facing an impossible challenge and having the
determination to keep going because you know it’s the right thing to do. It’s having
lost all hope and carrying on anyway. It’s being afraid and not letting that fear stop
you - Attitus

At the end learning, I so happy that my students can understanding the

activities and even some a weaknesses students slowly but their can joined the other
students doing the activities. They do a great team work and asking a question if their
not understand. When I asked them what that they have learned from the activities,
they can response and give a good feedback make me to fix my strategies in teaching
so whether smart students or weakness students they can enjoyed my class and got a
new knowledge on my class.
