The difference between the Past Simple and the Present Perfect:
The Present Perfect expresses the idea that something has happened by now and has links with the
present. The Past Simple expresses the idea of an action which happened some time ago and doesn't
have any connection with the present moment.
They liked to travel with their parents as they were children. (but not now)
They have travelled a lot for the past couple of years. (till now)
Bill didn't ride a horse last year. (last year is over)
Bill hasn't ridden a horse yet. (never tried, but he still can)
