Karaköy - Beşi̇ktaş Analysi̇s Mental Map Dri̇ft Essay
We continued on the starting point Tophane and Beşiktaş coastal road and finished at Beşiktaş pier.
Along the route, we stopped at some important points along this route, and reflected on and
commented on them.
Starting from here; If we need to make a brief assessment of the (modified) function of public spaces
located between Tophane and Beşiktaş; The fact that Tophane is in the center of the city has made it
valuable day by day, and as a result, it has become one of the fastest changing venues in the city. With
this change, people living there for a long time (perhaps immigrated) living there for a long time in
rented buildings at affordable prices, on the other hand, with the increase of cafes and restaurants day
by day, and finally with the arrival in Galataport, caused many different types of people to meet. We
can say that it is a complete gentrification movement with its so-called public opening, security all
over the place, a shopping mall that is zero to the sea, and many brand stores and cafe-restaurants. On
the other hand, along with Galataport, there is a construction that directly overturns the silhouette of
the historical Bosphorus with the silhouette of Kılıç Ali Pasha, Nusretiye Mosque, Tophane Clock
Tower and the area where the fountain is located, with the sea embankment in front and the structures
built right in front of them.
The building, which was designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem and built in 1968, whose assembly is
located on Mebusan Street while walking from Tophane to Beşiktaş, has been used as Akbank
Headquarters building for many years, and in recent years it has been used as Aksigorta Headquarters.
Ak Sigorta A .Ş to Arkla Otelcilik ve Turizm A.Ş., this company belongs to Reza Zarrab and 3
trustees have been appointed to the building with the decision of the 7th Administrative Court of Peace
in Istanbul, along with the confiscation of Zarrab's assets in the subsequent processes.” The building,
which has been in the hands of the trustee in recent years, has started to be looted in a way that will
both damage the building and endanger the life safety of passers-by, as the local shopkeepers leave
after a while for their safety. An important information is that the building is one of the iconic modern
structures of the 20th century, with the decision of the Istanbul II Numbered Cultural Heritage
Preservation Board, dated 13.05.2016 and numbered 4431. The group has been registered as a cultural
property to be protected.
As we continue on the route, when we come to the point where Beşiktaş Stadium is on the left, we can
say that Dolmabahçe Palace is the entrance point of the city's most important cultural axis, but here is
the silhouette of the European Side observed from the Üsküdar coast (E.ŞeVkin, 2016). Seeing the
Hilton Hotel in the back (from left to right, today's name), Harbiye Orduevi (behind the Hilton Hotel),
and Süzer Plaza in the front, an image that covers the beauty of Dolmabahçe Palace and spoils the
silhouette appears before us. The cafeteria and the car park between the historical monuments of
Dolmabahçe Palace and Dolmabahçe Mosque prevent the public from reaching the seaside. As we
continue, our stop this time, Akaretler Sıraevler, was built by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1875 as the lodging
of the prominent landlords of Dolmabahçe Palace by Sarkis Balyan and is known as Turkey's first
mass housing project. After the restoration project, W Istanbul is located next to a cafe-restaurant,
office & residence and 42 stores. We can say that it is places that appeal to people with a good
financial income. Within the scope of the landscaping project in Beşiktaş, the removal of the
crossroads in the square and the relocation of the bus stops created a traffic density in the region. The
people and drivers who use the area constantly say that the old version of the square is much better.
With this analysis; We have seen that the public spaces of the city have deep connotations about the
city and the social. Public parks, places, entertainment places etc. spaces, where the pulse of the city
beats, reveal the relationship between space and social/political against the distribution of the social on
space.
