When a person hears the Gospel of salvation and
they receive it with an understanding that they are
a sinner in need of a Savior through the
conviction of the Holy Spirit - this is when they
are cut to the heart. This is not the same as being
baptized in the Spirit (being filled with the Spirit).
God removes the heart of stone and gives them a
new heart of flesh, a fresh conscience and a new
Spirit (the Holy Spirit).
There are 4 steps in response to the gospel for a
complete birth:
1. Repent (turn away from their will, their sins
and turn to God, His will) along with
confession of sins
2. Trust in Jesus for salvation and forgiveness
3. Be baptized in water
4. Be baptized in Holy Spirit
Some if not most Christians are missing one or
more of these in their Christian walk and may
receive them later on when they have the full
understanding.Ezekiel 36:26-27: And | will give you a new heart,
and a new spirit | will put within you. And | will
remove the heart of stone from your flesh and
give you a heart of flesh. And | will put my Spirit
within you, and cause you to walk in my
statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Acts 2:37-39: Now when they heard this they
were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the
rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we
do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you
will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the
promise is for you and for your children and for all
who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God
calls to himself.”
Everyone who is born is born of flesh, born of
Adam. Our Spirit is dead. This is why we need to
be born again and be born of Christ.
John 1:12-13: "But to all who did receive him,
who believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God, who were born, not of
blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of
man, but of God."In John 3, we see the story of Nicodemus, Jesus
then tells him about being born again.
John 3:1-8: "Now there was a man of the
Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from
God, for no one can do these signs that you do
unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, | say to you,
unless one is born again he cannot see the
kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How
can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a
second time into his mother's womb and be born?”
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, | say to you,
unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he
cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is
born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born
of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that | said to
you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows
where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you
do not know where it comes from or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
To be born of water is to be baptized in water, and
to be born of Spirit is to be baptized in Holy Spirit.Baptism in water:
Baptism in water is not merely a symbol or public
declaration but rather God uses a physical element
to work in the spiritual. We are baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ, not to any church or
institution. We go under the water, die to sin and
are buried with Christ - the body born of flesh, our
old person dies and we rise up with Christ a new
creation through His resurrection, breaking the
power of death over us (we die physically on earth,
but we will live eternally and will rise up with our
new bodies on the day of Resurrection). We have a
new life, our sins are washed away and forgiven,
crucified with Christ, no longer slave/under the
power of sin.
Many believers who have not been delivered of
spirits, not been baptized, or have been baptized
but with no proper understanding of baptism
struggle with recurring/wilful sin and are unable to
be free because they have not died and are
carrying the old body; but this is not God's will for
us. He came to set us free from the power of sin
and change our desires.Verses to refer to for baptism in water:
Mark 16:15-18: "...Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved.."
Matthew 28:18-20: "....baptizing them in the name
of the Father (repentance to God the Father) and
of the Son (baptism in water in Jesus name) and
of the Holy Spirit (baptism of the Holy Spirit)..."
Acts 8:12:"... they were baptized, both men and
women."
Acts 22:16: "...Rise and be baptized and wash
away your sins.."
Romans 6:1-14: (read the whole passage)
1 Peter 3:21: "Baptism, which corresponds to this,
now Saves you, ...aS an appeal to God for a good
conscience,"
Galatians 2:20: "| have been crucified with Christ.
It is no longer | who live, but Christ who lives in
me..."
Acts 16:30-33: “...Sirs, what must | do to be
saved?...And they spoke the word of the Lord to
him and to all who were in his house...and he was
baptized at once, he and all his family."Baptism in the Holy Spirit:
Jesus started His ministry after He was baptized in
water and in the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the one who
baptizes us in the Holy Spirit, He promised it to his
disciples and said it is better that He leaves in order
that we may receive it, that He is the Spirit of truth
who will abide with us and in us. Baptism in the
Holy Spirit is when we get filled with the Holy Spirit
- It usually occurs through the laying on of hands,
but a person can receive it on their own simply by
praying to God to fill them with the Holy Spirit.
There is usually a sign speaking in tongues or
prophesying. Every believer receives a personal
tongues, which is one of the 4 tongues (explained
below). Some people are filled with the Spirit but
unaware of speaking in tongues, or have not
yielded to try and speak in faith. We then walk in
the Spirit every day, are being sanctified, being led
by Him. He also gives us boldness to preach the
gospel, teaches us, convicts us when we sin and
causes us to repent, corrects and rebukes us. He
brings understanding of the Scriptures and testifies
of Jesus, and allows us to cry out "Abba Father"
and gives us spiritual gifts for the church and for
unbelievers. We do not automatically receive the
baptism of the Holy Spirit when believe.Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16: ...He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit..."
John 1:33: ...the one who baptizes with the Holy
Spirit."
Luke 11:13: "...how much more will the heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
e After Jesus resurrection, He appeared to the
disciples and breathed on them the Holy Spirit - but
they were to wait in Jerusalem to receive the
baptism of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost
where they were filled with power and spoke in
tongues.John 20:22: ..."Receive the Holy Spirit"
Luke 24:49: ...stay here in the city until you have
been clothed with power from on high." (see
fulfillment in Acts 2).
Acts 1:4-5: ...the Promise of the Father..."; ...you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit..."
Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 2:1-4: "When the day of Pentecost arrived,
they were all together in one place. And suddenly
there came from heaven a sound like a mighty
rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where
they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire
appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave
them utterance."After this, the disciples went around, preached the
word, baptized people in water and Holy Spirit. In
some instances, people received the Holy Spirit
first and this also is the case today. Some believers
receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit on their own
while praying to God before they get baptized in
water.Verses where the disciples baptized with Holy
Spirit:
Acts 8:14-17: "...prayed for them that they might
receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen
on any of them, but they had only been baptized
in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their
hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit."
Acts 9:17: ...Jesus...has sent me...that you
may...be filled with the Holy Spirit." Paul gets
baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:44-47: ...the Holy Spirit fell on all who
heard the word. ...because the gift of the Holy
Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For
they were hearing them speaking in tongues and
extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone
withhold water for baptizing these people, who
have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
Acts 19:1-6: ...And he said to them, “Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
And they said, “No, we have not even heard that
there is a Holy Spirit.” ...On hearing this, they
were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And
when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy
Spirit came on them, and they began speaking
in tongues and prophesying.4 types of tongues:
1.
Personal tongues for self: received when
baptized with the Holy Spirit, prayer in the
Spirit, utter mysteries to God and not
understandable by men, used to edify
ourselves, allows us to pray without ceasing.
Mark 16:17, 1 Corinthians 14:2, 1
Corinthians 14:14-15, 1 Thessalonians
5:17, Jude 1:20.
Paul thanked God that he prayed in tongues
a lot (1 Corinthians 14:18). Over time you
may receive a new tongue different to what
you initially received.
. Personal tongues for intercession:
Ephesians 6:18 tells us to pray at all times in
the Spirit and make supplication for the
saints. You will be led by the Holy Spirit to
pray in tongues for someone, and at times
when you are unsure what to pray for with
regards to someone, you can pray in tongues
for them.3. Tongues as a sign, foreign earthly
language: When they received the Holy
Spirit in Acts 2, they could understand each
other in their own language. A believer while
speaking in tongues will receive a new
language (usually one that they cannot
understand), and will be testifying about God
to people who understand that specific
language. It could be French, Arabic,
Chinese, etc, this is usually to minister to
unbelievers and is as a sign to them and may
not occur all the time. (1 Corinthians 14:22).
4. Tongues for the church: This is the type of
tongue where a person will suddenly speak in
a loud heavenly language and will give the
interpretation, or someone else will receive
the interpretation, there is a message for the
church from God. (1 Corinthians 12:28-30).
