Module 6 Learning Output

This document summarizes a group activity where students learned about indigenous Philippine (IP) languages. The students learned that Aklanon and Hiligaynon languages differ in tone and certain spellings or pronunciations of words. They recognize that these languages play an important role in the identity and communication within IP communities. To help preserve these languages, the students suggest that elders ensure children are taught their local dialects and exposed to them from a young age at home. International influences through media can threaten local languages, so intergenerational teaching and regular practice of dialects at home are important to prevent them from being forgotten.

Activity 1: Getting to Know Their Language

1. What have you learned about the difference of the IP language you encountered
compared to your primary language or dialect?
I have learned that there are some similarities of words and the differences of
Aklanon and Hiligaynon speakers is the tone on how they speak and the spellings of their
words. Aklanon people speak so fast while Hiligaynon people speak so sweet. I notice
that Aklanon speakers substitute the phonetic sound e for l pronounced with a rolling r
sound like for example “Akeanon” instead of “Aklanon”. The unique sound of it has
distinguished their language from other Visayan languages, making it distinct mark of
Aklanon/Akeanon. However, Hiligaynon is more on its tone and people who do not know
how to speak the language find it cute and also unique to the point that they mimic it.

2. What do you think is the role of the particular IP language you encountered to the IP
community?
The role of the IP language at the IP community is a huge factor on how they live.
They use their language to communicate with each other. By using their own language,
they get to understand each other better. Since they are from the same community, when
they use their own language, they also get to enrich it and even promoting it. It makes
this community to comfortably converse with each other without worrying of being
misunderstood. Their language also serves as their identity. If someone outside from their
community could here them talk, they would eventually realize and be able to identify
this certain IP community. Our language plays a great role on our lives. We must always
preserve it.

3. What are the things that you can do to help preserve and conserve this language?
Philippines was always proud of its rich and variety of cultures. It always makes
sure to honor each traditions, heritage, and most especially the language. Children are
always taught to love and uphold their locality and dialect. In order to help these
languages to be kept alive and passed on from generations to generations, the elders must
make sure to never let their children forget about it. The international cultures has been
influencing the younger generation lately due to their exposure in the different social
media platforms where different nations from the world collaborates. If we do not let
them get drown from those languages that they are learning from other countries, we may
be able to save ours. We must make them understand the importance of our own dialects
and how it is our identity. As young as possible, we must train them to use their own
dialects at home in order to avoid them forgetting about it. We may speak a lot of
languages at school or at work, but at home, our dialects must be practiced. We should
always be reminded of our roots and enrich them as well.
