LAB 3 - Rockwell Hardness Testing
LAB 3 - Rockwell Hardness Testing
I confirm that this assignment is my own work, is not copied from any other person's work,
and has not previously submitted for assessment either at University of Johannesburg or
elsewhere.
I would like to give thanks to the tutors and the lab technicians for the help they provided us
with and my fellow group members for their wonderful cooperation. And thanks to our
Material Science and Manufacturing lecturer Mr. Mukhawana for preparing us for the
practical with theory

List of equipment
Micro-hardness tester
To begin, the specimen was placed on the anvil in contact with the indenter.
An accurately controlled test force pressed the indenter into the sample.
The force was retained for 10 seconds.
After the completion of the dwell time, the indenter was removed, leaving a round
indent in the sample.
The machine handwheel was rotated until the horizontal and vertical were tangent to
the diamond corners
The indent size was determined optically by measuring the two diagonals of the
diamond indent with a portable microscope connected with the load application
device.
The distances of the indenter sides were recorded.
