LECTURE:

Getting Started for Computer Assembly

As mentioned before the

motherboard is the
backbone of the
computer. It connects the
peripherals into one
cohesive computer unit.
Let us take a look at the
basic components of
motherboard again.

1. I/O port s
2. Power Connector
3. Processor's ZIF socket
4. Memory slot
5. Atx power connector
6. Name of the vendor
7. CMOS/ BIOS battery
8. IDE connector
9. Front panel connectors
10. Sata connector
11. Cmos bios jumper
12. Usb connector
13. Fdd connector
14. Pci slot
15. Motherboard version number
16. Cmos bios ic
17. Audio modem riser slot
18. Pci express slot
19. North bridge ic
20. Southbridge ic

The motherboard should be configured first

before installing. It comes with a manual that
contains the instruction on how to configure
the motherboard so that it will work with the
CPU. This is accomplished by setting various
jumpers and dip switches. A jumper is a set of
2 or 3 pins that stick out from the
motherboard. They are set by either capping
or uncapping with a little rubber cap on it. If
they are uncapped then they are considered off.

Preparing the case

 Position the case on its side. Set aside the power connector
and all the wires out of the way before placing the
mainboard.

 Screw a brass riser which is also known as standoffs. The

risers will keep the motherboard from touching the metal
computer case that may cause a short circuit.

Setting the Motherboard

 Install the I/O shield. The I/O shield is a metallic piece that
has little fins sticking out that fits in the large rectangular
space on the back of the case. This shield is designed to fit
around all the I/O connector of the mainboard.

 After installing the I/O shield, move the board towards the
I/O shield.

 When the I/O shield and the board is properly lined-up, check
the I/O port. Make sure that there are no metal fins that will
get in the way that may cause a problem in using the I/O
devices.

 Next, screw the motherboard to secure it Use a clean and no

metal shavings screw drivers to tighten the motherboard
screw. Usually it takes two screws to secure the motherboard
but feels free to use more.

 Next, install the various wires that connect the motherboard

to the computer case.
 The computer case has a connector for
the power, reset buttons and the led
connectors that show system activity.
Take a look at the motherboard manual to
see where in the motherboard the
connector should be placed.
 Connect other thin wires such as USB Connectors and audio
connectors for the usb ports and front audio ports of the
computer to work well.

Installing the Power Supply

Installing the power supply is easy and less complicated but keep in
mind that when installing the power supply, never open or insert any
metal objects into the vents of the power supply to prevent electrical
shocks because it contains various capacitors inside.
 Mount the power supply.  Align the PSU
inside the case with the for mounting
holes align property. Make sure that any
fans on the power supply are not
blocked and screw it in from the back
with all four screws.

 Mount the power supply security with all

the four screws before moving on to the
next step of the installation.

 Connect the ATX power supply to the

motherboard. This is the big white or
20 or 24 pins connector that is plugged
into the motherboard.

 Locate the power connector which is either be a 4 pin or an 8

pin connections depending on the motherboard. The old
version of motherboard commonly has yellow and black 4 pin
power connector.
Connecting the case fan
The key should have a case fan. Connect the case fan follow the steps:
 Locate the case fan connection using
manual, then connect the case fan. The
case fan is typically connected with a
three-pin connector similar to the CPU
fan.

 Screw in the fan to secure it. The fan simply

requires the installation of four screws to
hold it in place. Use a screwdriver to tighten
the screw of the fan, but not so tight that
damage the fan's enclosure.

Types of CPU
Installing the CPU is not a very difficult task to do; it will only depend
on the types of CPU the individual is using.

Socket style CPU-is a flat shape that has a grid of pins inserted into the
motherboard's CPU socket. Some popular socket style cpu or the AMD
Duron, and the intel Core i7 i5 i3.

Slot style CPU- shaped like a cartridge and often has the cooling fan
and hintze heatsink built into it. intel Pentium III, Slot 1 CPU's and the
AMD Athlon Slot 1 CPU's are the most common slots style CPU.

Installing the Socket Style CPU

 Orient that Chip: this involves locating pin
one on both the cheap and the socket.
The chief is always mark at pin 1. It may
be a dot on one corner, slightly notched
corner, or a mark at one of the pins under
the chip. On the sockets, there is a notch
on the corner. These corner will be
matched up for the correct installation.

 Open the ZIF socket: Press the lever to

open. The handler may need to pull the
lever out a little bit before it will open.

 Insert the Processor: when inserting the

processor, always remember the
orientation determined in step 1. Insert
the trip slowly into the socket. It should fall
into the socket with all pins lining up.

 Closing the ZIF socket: Press down the

lever to close the socket. The handler
may feel some resistance while
pressing down the lever. If they need
to lean on it, check first if the chip is
installed correctly.

Installing Heatsink or Cooling fan

Computer fan is a fan inside the computer case designed primarily to
disperse excess heat to prevent overheating.
Heat sink is an electronic device attached to the microprocessor which
is used to dissipate heat into the surrounding air.

Now, the user has to install the cooling fan and heatsink. Most often
the cooling fan and heatsink are sold together and already attached to
one another. If not, the handler may have to screw the cooling fan to
the heatsink. The cooling fan or heatsink is attached to the CPU via a
metal clip that looks on the CPU socket. To assure that the heatsink is
in contact with the CPU surface area, attached a thermal paste to the
heatsink.
o Place the cooling fan in the
CPU.

o Lock up the cooling fan

o Connecting the heatsink to the
motherboard

Installing the Memory

This one is the simplest step in the whole process. Basically, it
amounts to finding the available memory slot on the motherboard and
snapping the chip in place. To do this, simply follow the steps below.

 Locate the RAM slot on the motherboard.

Press firmly the retaining clips to open the
socket. The clip on each end of the slot
holds the memory in place.

 Align the RAM and compare the socket

shape to the shape of the RAM. Line up
and insert the memory. The notch in
the bottom edge of the RAM must
match up with the rise in the memory
slot. Otherwise, it will result in the
performance degradation.

 Clip the memory in place. Once the

memory chip is on the slot, press down
firmly till it snaps into place. The clips
should spring back and lock into place with
a click sound.
