Demo Lesson, Present Perfect

This lesson plan teaches students about the present perfect tense through a communicative speaking activity. Students first discuss regular activities using simple present tense. The teacher then explains the differences between regular/irregular verbs and present/past participles. Students practice forming sentences in the present perfect tense with flashcards showing irregular verb forms. They work in groups to use the verbs to tell short stories in the present perfect tense. The lesson closes by having students identify examples of the tense in a song.

Demo Lesson- Communicative Speaking Lesson for ACTFL Advanced Low/ILR 2/CEFR B2 (low)

(Grammar Component- Present Perfect)

This lesson plan is based on the Total Approach methodology; in others words the LAF
(Learning-Acquisition-Facility) hypothesis of learning a language

Materials-
-Flashcards with common past and present participles of regular and irregular verbs
-Audio/Music Video “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” by U2

Learning Objective- Students will be able to create short stories using irregular verbs in the
present perfect tense

Key terms- present participle, past participle, regular verb, irregular verb, present perfect

Introduction (5 minutes)
-Ask students to share some things they/their family do every week
-Students should talk about their actions in complete sentences
For example: I go to school, my mother goes to work, my father cooks dinner
-Students should write some of their sentences on the board verbalism on the board, then have
them correct their mistakes with encouragement from the teacher
-Ask a guided question while doing over mistakes, such as does anything sound weird when you
read it aloud? From there explain that verbs can have different participles or forms
-Then explain the difference between the present participle vs. the past participle as well as
The difference between a regular verb vs. an irregular verb
Present participle- the form of the verb describing an action currently happening, ex. Helping
(Often used with continuous tenses)
Past participle- the form of the verb describing an action that has already happened ex. Helped
(often used with perfect tenses)
Regular verb- conforms to the usual rule for forming its simple past/past participle, ex. Talk,
talked, talked
Irregular verb- does not conform to the usual rule for forming its simple past/past participle, ex.
Eat, ate, eaten

Explicit Instruction/Teaching Modeling/Language Sample (5 minutes)

-Introduce students to five common regular verbs (from the flashcards) and five common
irregular verbs (also from the flashcards), then let them know the past participles can be used to
describe actions that they have/haven’t taken, Ex. I have driven to NYC two times.
-After that introduce the present perfect tense, which contains a subject, a form of “have” and a
past participle. Ex. She has already drunk Colombian coffee before.
-Teacher should ask how long they’ve done certain activities on the whiteboard to guide them to
producing present perfect sentences, asking questions to get them talking
Ex. How long have you studied English? I have studied English for three months.
Explain that a verb in the present perfect tense describes an action that began in the past and is
still happening, I have studied English for three months (started 3 months ago and you still are)
Also, explain that a verb in the present perfect tense can be used to describe an action that
happened and was completed at an unspecific time in the past. She has eaten sushi before.
Listen to “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” by U2 for examples of present perfect

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

-Students give each student one flashcard with an irregular verb on it
-Hold up one of the remaining cards, and have students use it to make a present perfect sentence
-Correct any mistakes made and repeat this exercise with another card
-Ask students to make their own sentences with their card
Ex. I have driven to work three times. I have been to the bank this month. She has done the
dishes many times. They have eaten pizza since 5pm. She has never drunk soda before.
-Have students share their sentences with other classmates and correct any mistakes they notice

Independent Working Time/ Review Closing (15 minutes)

-Place students until groups of three or in pairs
-Ask them to use their irregular verbs to create sentences in the present perfect tense. Then let
them know that these sentences will need to be complied into a short story
-Once they have finished, each group should come to the front of the room and tell their story

-Pay close attention to students’ sentence structures and make mental notes of struggling students
for an appropriate review next class. (Downward expansion)
Also make note of more advance students and challenge them to create more complex sentences
with less common irregular verbs (Upward expansion)
-Regardless, have students explain the process of forming present perfect tense sentences next
class
-For the last part of the lesson have them to Listen to “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking
For,” by U2 for examples of present perfect and have students raise their hand every time they
hear an example of the present perfect
