In the IELTS Speaking section, candidates are interviewed by real live IELTS examiners. The
interview consists of a number of personal questions. But don’t worry, things don’t get too personal.
You won’t be asked for your deepest secrets or your email password.
You will be asked about basic personal circumstances such as where you are from and what you do
for fun. And you’ll be asked about personal experiences related to travel, work, friends, family, and so
on.
Certain personal conversational topics are especially common in the IELTS Speaking interview. This
PDF features a list of common questions you might see on the IELTS.
First, we’ll look at common topics and questions from IELTS Speaking, Parts 1 and 3. These first and
last parts of the interview are conversational. You’ll be asked a lot of short questions in a
back-and-forth exchange with your examiner.
After that, you’ll see a set of “topic cards” for IELTS Speaking Part 2. This part of Speaking is also
known as the “long turn.” On test day, you have one minute to look at the topic card and plan your
response. Then you will speak your response, uninterrupted, for about three minutes. (On the test,
these topics are also printed on actual cards that your interviewer will hand to you.)
Speaking Part 2 topics are fairly similar to the topics at the beginning and end of the interview.
However, the topic card questions are more detailed and specific, so the subject matter itself can be a
little different than the topics in the other parts of the Speaking section.
