Individual Assignment-15%

This document provides instructions for 4 questions as part of a construction engineering assignment. Question 1 asks to estimate loader production based on loading rock from a quarry stockpile. Question 2 evaluates the cost and production of using a hoe to load gravel trucks. Question 3 asks to calculate the time required for a grader to maintain a haul road. Question 4 provides details to calculate the direct cost of using different dozers to move earth and asks which dozer would be best under normal and wet conditions.

FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT CHAIR
Course title: Construction Equipment Course Code: CEng5193
Individual Assignment Total Mark: 20%
Attempt all questions Date of submission: May15, 2023
Target Group: 5th Year Civil Engineering Department Students
General Instruction
1. Plagiarized work will result zero value in your mark.
❖ Read properly and answer the following questions.

1. A 7-cy wheel loader will be used to load a crusher from a quarry stockpile of blasted
rock (average breakage) 180 ft away. The rock has a loose unit weight of 2,700 lb/cy.
Estimate the loader production in tons based on a 50-min-hour efficiency factor.
2. Evaluate cost and production using a 3-cy hoe to load wet gravel into 14-cy-size
trucks. Assume a bucket fill factor of 105% and that the hoe bucket swing cycle time
is 24 sec. Use the information in Fig. below, a truck net empty weight of 36,860 lb,
and a rated payload of40,000 lb. Dump time will be 1.3 min. The haul distance is 2.5
miles from the pit to the plant up a 3% grade. The rolling resistance of the haul road
will be maintained at 3%. The hoe and operator cost $97 per hour, and trucks cost $49
per hour. What is the most cost-effective mix of bucket loads to use in loading the
trucks and number of trucks to place on this job?

3. A grader will be used to maintain 2.5 miles of haul road. It is estimated that this work
will require three passes in first gear, leveling the road requires two passes in second

gear, and final shaping of the road requires two passes in fourth gear. Use an efficiency
factor of 60%. Grader speeds are given in the next chart. What is the time requirement
for this task?

4. A contractor wants to investigate the production and cost differences of using a 7S

blade on a D7H dozer or an S blade on an 824 dozer. The material is a dry clay, and it
is to be moved a distance of 200 ft from the beginning of the cut. The dozing is uphill
on a 5%. grade. The operator will have average skill, the dozers have power-shift
transmissions, and traction is assumed to be satisfactory. The site will be dusty. The
material weighs 98 pcf in the bank state. Job efficiency is assumed to be equivalent to
a 50-min hour. Calculate the direct cost of the proposed earthmoving operation in
dollars per bcy. Assume that the 0&0 (owning and operating) cost for the D7 dozer is
$76.00 per hour and $73.00 per hour for the 824. The operator's wage is $16.00 per
hour plus 35% for fringes, worker's compensation, and other benefits.
a. Which machine would you use on this job?
b. It rains and the coefficient of traction for the 824 is now 0.37. The coefficient of
traction for the D7 is 0.55. Which machine would you use on this job?
