Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. ENGAGE
Good afternoon class! Good afternoon ma’am

Please stand up, bow your heads and feel the Our Father who art in heaven…
presence of the Lord. All together we pray “Our
Father”.
Yes ma’am!
Please sit down and check our attendance. When I
called your name, instead of saying present, choose
between “PINILI or NAGPARAYA”. Understood? Students will stand up and choose between “PINILI
or NAGPARAYA”
(Checking the attendance)

Very good class we have a complete attendance

today!

Before we proceed to our lesson, we will have a

preliminary activity. The class will be divided into
three (3) groups by counting 1, 2, and 3.

Group 1 will be on the right side, group 2 will be in

the middle, and group 3 will be on the left side.
Class, listen carrefully. Here are the instructions.

Use 1 cellular or mobile phone for each group and

browse "https://edpuzzle.com/" .

1. Select STUDENT
2. Sign in using your google account

I will invite you to your classroom to see the code.

3. Enter Class code and join class called “BSED 3 -

MATH”

I will assign a video to the class entitled “Math

Riddles EdPuzzle”, just to warm up those brains.
Since we are all in the same classroom setting, we
will be using Live Mode.

Note: We cannot skip the video unless you are

finished answering the questions.

Choose the best and correct answers for each

questions by typing your answers in your mobile
phones.

We will answer only from Riddle #1 until Riddle #9

After the 15 seconds, I will give you another 3

seconds to enter your answers.

Edpuzzle will track your progress and responses

just like for any other assignment.

Is the instructions clear?

Now you can begin the activity.

B. EXPLORE

The role of this tool is vital because teachers need to

demonstrate 21st century characteristics to be able
to to meet the demands of the learners in 21st
century classroom.

So our lesson for today is about GAME-BASED

LEARNING.

What Is Game-Based Learning?

Game-based learning is an active learning technique

that uses games to improve student learning. The
learning, in this case, comes from playing the game,
which promotes critical thinking and problem-solving
skills.

The results of using this teaching strategy have

proven that incorporating games is highly effective
because they can facilitate and encourage student
motivation

C. EXPLAIN
What are the benefits?

01 – Motivation
We could say that if students were always motivated,
teachers’ problems would disappear.
Motivation is the key to good teaching and learning
flow in the classroom. For this reason, GBL is very
effective, as games are naturally motivating and
engaging. Moreover, games provide something that
can be described as “far from a traditional lesson”
and they are often include competition among
students; which can raise the level of motivation in a
classroom. Teachers can decide on the type of
competition and create supportive teams to lower the
level of stress among students.
It is important to also create and incorporate games
according to the students ages, for example,
teenagers can tend to lose their motivation if a game
seems too childish. In order to avoid this, the
teacher must prepare games according to their
audience with content that matters to their students.
Teachers should never be afraid of using games for
learning and keep in mind that nobody is ever too old
to play a game.

02 – Inclusion
Playing can challenge students and force them to
step out of their comfort zone. For this reason,
sometimes it can happen that some students don’t
want to play certain roles. If this is the case, the
teacher should not force those who do not want to
play them. Fortunately, a GBL activity, whether it is
complex or not, is made of different parts and
different characters; there is no limit to the creation
of the type of players and the kind of participation
that is required. Students can be assigned the role of
a supervisor who checks that everybody respects the
rules of the game, a recorder who makes a video of
the in-class activity, a reporter who collects results
and/or describes how the game evolves, or a
constructor who builds the game, etc. The point is
roles and tasks can be differentiated to include all
students.

03 – Student centered
Games are naturally student-centered and students
should be involved in the preparation of the game. If
they are engaged and interested, they will
accomplish tasks more willingly than with traditional
activities. Usually, when teachers set up the goals
and the rules, most students will work without any
further explanation and teachers can monitor and
assist their students.
If you wish to expand your knowledge on how to
implement a student-centered classroom, have a
look at our teacher training course.

04 – Critical thinking and decision taking

These are two skills that can be practiced and
learned especially when engaging in role play. When
students are assigned to play specific characters in
certain environments, they have to decide, on the
spot, what to do in order to reach the goal.

05 – Group work
It is not difficult to understand why a game is highly
suitable for team and group work. Unity is strength
and everyone loses or wins when they play a game
together.
If you wish to know more about how to use
collaborative and cooperative learning strategies in
the classroom, have a look at our teacher training
course on the topic.

06 – Creativity
GBL and games are effective tools for fostering
creativity, especially if students are involved in the
construction of the game. Imagination has no limits.
Teachers can leave opportunities inside of a game
where students can fill in the blanks with their own
solutions and ideas.

TOP 5 GAME-BASED LEARNING

1. Edpuzzle

that makes it fun to learn any subject, in any
language, on any devices, for all ages.

-Quizlet Live in teams mode is an engaging game
you can use to study or to help students learn.
Players work in teams to correctly match the
terms and definition from study sets. You can

5. Quizizz (Worksheet)
https://quizizz.com
- Quizizz is a creativity software company use is
class, group works, pre-test review, exams, unit
test, and impromptu test. It allow students and
teachers to be online at the same time or take
this as an assignment.

Overall Advantages of the game-based learning:

l Draws learners into a lesson more
actively
l Competition can peak motivation
l Reinforce the fact that failure is not a
setback nor an outcome but indication
that more skill building is needed
l Learners gain an understanding of
procedure and the value of alternative
paths
l Game based learning helps learners
become more confident, independent
thinkers who are more prepared to take
on large projects and carry them through
to completion

Overall challenges of game based learning:

l Games take time to learn and design
properly
l Wasted efforts will be the greatest
administrative fear for adult educators
l It can involve materials that range from
the inexpensive to the costly
l Pedagogical and technical supports
might be necessary (additional
resources)

Remember, when a game is played in the

classroom, it is a useful way to learn. Games are
tools that can be used to learn with fun and they can
become part of productive school time. Games do
not have to be played only as a reward or a pastime
activity.
Teachers who incorporate games know and
understand this, students may not. It is of vital
importance to explain this concept to students by
reminding them that they are playing, but still
working (and learning) too.
Here are two recommendations for making an
effective GBL activity and keeping students focused
on their learning, not just on their fun.

E. EVALUATE

The class will be divided into two group to have a

debate.

IV. Evaluation
On a 1/2 sheet of paper, answer this in 3 to 5 sentences only.

1. How can game-based learning platforms helps you as a 21st century teacher to
become an effective and efficient in teaching and learning?
2. What is/are the weaknesses of integrating game-based learning in teaching and
learning instruction?

V. Assignment
Create a game-based learning material of your chosen topic.
