Problems
Q1. Suppose that a function f (x) is defined on an interval (a, b).
(a) Is it possible that f (x) has no absolute maximum and minu-
mum Explain your answer in a short paragraph.

(b) Support your explanation by providing an interval (a, b) and

a function f (x). Graph your function on the given interval.

Q2. For this question, you do not need to provide a formula for your
function. Draw a graph f (x) defined on the interval [−4, 4] with
all of the following properties:

1. An absolute maximum at x = 4.

2. An absolute minimum at x = −1.

3. A local maximum at x = −2.

4. A critical point that is not a maximum or minimum at x = 2.

Q3. Consider the function f (x) = (x − x2 )2 on the interval [−1, 1].

(a) Find all the critical points of f (x).

(b) Identify all the local and absolute maxima and minima.

(c) Sketch the function, and highlight the minima and maxima,
and label them as local or absolute.

Q4. A patient’s pulse is measured three times. The results are 70 bmp,
80 bpm, and 120 bpm. The doctor would like to find a number
which most accurately represents the patient’s pulse. To do so,
they minimize:

p(x) = (x − 70)2 + (x − 80)2 + (x − 120)2

(a) Find all the critical points of p(x).

(b) Calculate which values of x minimizes p(x).

(c) Briefly explain why the doctor might choose this function p(x)
to minimize.

Q5. Consider the function f (x) = x4 − 6x3 .

(a) Determine where f (x) is increasing and decreasing.

(b) Determine the local minima and maxima of f (x).

(c) Detemine where f (x) is concave up and concave down.

(d) Determine the inflection points of f (x).
