examples of the new
lesson where the concepts
are clarified
Hadji and Amina are playing on the shore. They are picking
seashells. They are waiting for their father. Their father is coming
with some fish. He is riding on the vinta.
Do you like the story? Let’s check if you understand the story as much as you
like it. Answer the following questions orally.
1. Who are playing in the shore?
2. Where are Hadji and Amina playing?
3. What are Hadji and Amina doing?

Are the information or details asked important in understanding the story?

Yes, indeed! These are important in noting details.

D. Abstraction Read and understand these pieces of information.

A story is a connected series of events told through words.

We hear stories every day and, most importantly, we remember the
things that happened in a story. One way to remember the things in a story
is through “noting details”.

In noting details, we must take note of the following:

1.Characters

*These refer to person, animal or thing in a story.

*They perform the action in the story.

Examples are: Mika, father, mother, pig, Ana, Bea

2. Setting

*This refers to the time and place of the story.

Examples are: in the house, one day, Saturday morning, in the

farm, in the park, in school, Sunday

3. Events

* These are the things that happen in the story.

Examples: 1. Hadji and Amina are playing in the shore.

2. They are picking seashells.

3. They are waiting for their father.

Another important skill in reading is to infer the character’s feelings and

traits. In inferring character’s feelings and traits, you must pay careful
attention to what the character says, how he/she says it, and what his/her
actions are.
Let’s take this example:
Upon hearing the news, Mara run to their house and shouted,
“Yipee! I won the contest.”

From the actions and what the character said, we can infer that the
character is feeling happy or joyful.
Identifying the speaker of the story or poem listened to is also
important. In the example presented above, who is telling “Yipee! I won the
contest?”
Based on the example, the speaker is Mara.
