Quiz No. 1 With Solutions

This document appears to be a quiz for a steel design course. It contains 3 practice design problems related to steel columns, bolted connections, and gusset plate design. Students are instructed to show their work, include units, and round final answers to two decimal places. Problem 1 involves calculating axial loads on a column from various loads. Problem 2 examines the strength of a double splice bolted connection. Problem 3 evaluates the strength of a gusset plate connection between a plate and transverse stiffener.

CE322-18 PRINCIPLES OF STEEL DESIGN – QUIZ NO.

1
STUDENT NAME: ___________________________________ DATE: ______________
STUDENT NUMBER: _______________________________ SCORE: _____________

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer/s in two (2) decimal places.
Each problem should be written on a new sheet of paper. The following rules will apply in the grading of
problem sets. Points will be deducted for each of the following items:

• No sketches where sketches are necessary or desirable as instructed.

• No units where units are applicable.
• Not rounding-off your final answers to an appropriate decimal place.
• Not underlining/boxing your final answers.
• Not numbering each page and each problem.

Note: No need to rewrite the problem. Just present your solutions. Use AISC section database if applicable.
Assume given loads as Service Load (Unfactored) unless otherwise specified.

Problem No. 1 (35 points) – Allotted time = 30 minutes

A typical frame of a six-story office building is shown. The loading on the frame is as follows:
Roof dead load; including cladding and columns; wDr = 1.6kN/m
Roof live load; wLr = 0.6kN/m
Floor dead load; including cladding and columns; wD = 2.2kN/m
Floor live load; wL = 1.7kN/m
Horizontal wind pressure; ph = 1.4kN/m
Vertical wind pressure; pv = 0.7kN/m
Determine the maximum and minimum required loads on a column. Assume f1=1.0.

Refer to the double splice connection shown below. The bolts are 16mm diameter in standard holes. The
two plates at the left are both PL300x10 and the plate at the right is PL300x18. Use A36 steel.
