Foundation Project Statement Spring21

1. A school with a mezzanine is to be built based on site plans and borehole data provided. 2. Five tasks are required: develop soil profiles, propose foundation level, calculate bearing capacity and settlements, design foundations, and provide plans. 3. Subsurface conditions from 5 boreholes to 20m depth and column loads/dimensions are given to complete the required geotechnical design and planning.

Project # 1- Spring 2021

A school with a mezzanine area is to be built at the site shown in the attached contour plan
(Figure 1). The school is a ground floor + mezzanine. The ground floor level will be
constructed at a level of +3.5 m. The column plan is shown in Figure 2. The column loads
and dimensions are shown in Table 1. The structural design has the following performance
criteria:
1- Maximum settlement = 25 mm
2- Maximum differential settlement along axis B-B’ is 5 mm.
Five exploratory borings have been drilled to a depth of 20.0 m. in order to determine the
subsurface conditions. The boreholes are attached showing the results of the field
investigation conducted (SPT, etc). Based on the above, the following to be completed:

1. Develop cross-section along axes B-B to indicate the soil profiles beneath the
proposed building after completing the filling process. The profiles should include
the existing and proposed grades, the proposed building, strata boundaries and the
groundwater table. Do not use an exaggerated vertical scale.
2. Propose appropriate foundation level.
3. Calculate bearing capacity.
4. Calculate maximum settlement.
5. Calculate Maximum Differential settlement.
6. Design the foundations for this factory.
7. Draw the Foundation plan
8. Draw Reinforcement Details
