Western Europe that also includes overseas regions and territories.

6. PARIS AND ITS ARRONDISSEMENTS
Paris was once just a village that settled on the "Ile de la Cité" at the junction of the River
Seine's two branches. Paris has vastly expanded over the centuries and took the
surrounding villages under its wing. Nowadays the ‘City of Light’ - a name given to Paris
during the age of the Enlightenment - is made up of several arrondissments, numbered
from 1 to 20 and logically ordered with the 1st in the centre and the others following on
in a clockwise spiral. The differences are vast and varied between the arrondissements,
both in terms of populations and attractions. The arrondissements are named according to
their number. For example, you might live in the 5th arrondissement, which would be
written as 5ème (or 5e) in French.
9
The 20 arrondissements are :
1er Louvre
2e Bourse
3e Temple
4e Hôtel-de-Ville
5e Panthéon
6e Luxembourg
7e Palais-Bourbon
8e Élysée
9e Opéra
10e Enclos Saint-Laurent puis Entrepôt
11e Popincourt
12e Reuilly
13e Gobelins
14e Observatoire
15e Vaugirard
16e Passy
17e Batignolles-Monceau
18e Butte-Montmartre
19e Buttes-Chaumont
20e Ménilmontant

7. WEATHER AND CLIMATE
Climate Zones
Western France has an oceanic climate which is mild and has possible rainfall all year
round. The central “third” of France is semi-oceanic often has less rainfall in the summer,
but is otherwise rather similar. The northeast has a continental climate and is generally
drier than the east, but has hotter summers and colder winters. The mountain climate in
the south provides a cooler climate with more precipitation. Lastly, the southeast of
France has a purely Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers.

GRAMMAIRE:
Subject pronouns are the words that are used to replace nouns or names of a subject in a
phrase (person, place or thing). For example in English you say “Sarah is a student. She
is intelligent”. Here the name ‘Sarah’ is replaced by a pronoun ‘She’. Same is the case in
French. See the table below:
Je I
Tu (singulier) You (Singular/informal)
Il He
Elle She
Nous We
Vous (singulier, formel) You (Singular, respect, formal)
Vous (pluriel) You (Plural)
Ils (masculine pluriel) They (Masculine group)
Ils (groupe mixte) They (mixed group)
Elles (féminin pluriel) They (Female group)
Différence tu/vous:
The difference between ‘tu’ and ‘vous’ is somewhat same as in Urdu ’tum’ and ‘aap’.
‘Tu’ is used for a singular (one) person), when you are addressing your friend, family
members or children etc. And ‘vous’ is used either for ‘you’ singular, when you are
addressing an elder person or someone higher in rank etc. or to show respect. ‘Vous’ can
also be used for plural form.
14
Verbes : s’appeler, être, habiter, parler
In all languages there are verbs to make sentences. These verbs are not used as it is in a
sentence. Their forms are always changed. For example in the case of the verbe ‘to go’,
you cannot say ‘I to go’, She to go’ etc. But you say ‘I go’, She goes’. So you change the
form of the verb according to the subject of the verb. This changing of the forms of the
verbs in a sentence is called conjugating a verb. Same is the case in French. Let’s learn
the conjugation of some verbs:
S’appeler: This verb is used for telling one’s name. The literal translation of the verb is
‘to call oneself’. But remember never to translate something word for word. Language is
getting the sense of a phrase. Below is the conjugation of the verb ‘s’appeler’.
Français Anglais
Examples:
Je m’appelle Sarah
Tu t’appelles Marc
Il s’appelle George
Elle s’appelle Élisabeth
Nous nous appelons George, Marc et Sarah.
Vous vous appelez Sarah.
Vous vous appelez Sarah et Marc
Ils s’appellent Marc et George
Ils s’appellent Marc, George et Sarah
Elles s’appellent Sarah et Élisabeth
15
Être (To be): This is an important verb. With the help of this verb you tell about your
nationality, profession and qualities. Below is the conjugation of the verb ‘être’.
Français Anglais
Je suis I am
Tu es You are (singular/informal)
Il est He is
Elle est She is
Nous sommes We are
Vous êtes You are (Singular/formal)
Vous êtes You are (Plural)
Ils sont They are (masculine/plural)
Ils sont They are (mixed)
Elles sont They are (feminine group)
Examples:
Français Anglais
J’habite I live
Tu habites You live
Il habite He lives
Elle habite She lives
Nous habitons We live
Vous habitez You live
Ils habitent They live
Elles habitent They live
16
The verb ‘parler’ (to speak, to talk)
Français Anglais
Je parle I speak/talk
Tu parles You speak/talk
Il parle He speaks/talks
Elle parle She speaks/talks
Nous parlons We speak/talk
Vous parlez You speak/talk
Ils parlent They speak/talk
Ells parlent They speak/talk
Examples:
Je parle trois langues: ourdou, anglais, français : I speak three languages : Urdu, English,
French
Note: You must have noticed now that ‘il’, ‘elle’ singular forms are conjugated the same
way and ils, elles plural forms are conjugated the same way.
Français Anglais
J’ai I have
Tu as You have
Il a He has
Elle a She has
Nous avons We have
Vous avez You have
Ils ont They have
Ells ont They have
The verb ‘avoir’ is used to show possession and also to tell the age. It is also used in
certain expressions that you will learn in later units.
In English you say “I am 18 years old”. But in French you cannot say “Je suis 18 ans”.
This phrase is incorrect. Use the verb ‘avoir’ (to have) to tell your age. Say “J’ai 18 ans’.
