Lesson Plan in Science 6 - Separating

The lesson plan outlines a science lesson on techniques for separating mixtures, including decantation, evaporation, filtering, sieving, and using magnets. Students will review these techniques, participate in a group activity to unscramble words related to separation methods, and have a demonstration on separating colored nips by color. The lesson will assess if students can identify and describe the different processes for separating mixtures.

2. Greetings

Good morning class. Good morning ma’am

You may now take your seats. Thank you teacher

How are you class? We’re fine teacher

Good to hear that
3. Checking of attendance

Say present If I called your name

Present
Camila Present
Kayla Present
Trixie

Very good! Everyone is present let’s give ourselves (Students clap their hands)
a round of applause.
4. Classroom rules:

In my science class there are classroom rules we

have to remember, what are those?
• Zip your mouth
• Listen to the teacher
• Raise your hand if you want to answer
• Participate in the class.

Do you understand class?

Very good!
Yes maam
B. Developmental Activity

Review:
Everybody read (heterogeneous) Heterogeneous

In sort in our review, who can recall or tell me

what heterogeneous is? Who can give me the
definition? (answers may vary)

Can you give the example of heterogeneous

Oil and water
How about the (homogenous) who can give me the
definition?

Very good everyone! I’m so glad that everyone has Vinegar

remember our topic yesterday.

For now, We are going to sing together.

Please listen I will going to sing first, and repeat

after me. Okay? Okay maam

Good job everyone!

Now, I will group you into 6 groups

Each group will be given a scrambled letters and

arrange it to form a correct word. Paste it in a bond
paper that I provide in your group. After that Paste
it in the board. The group will finish first will
receive a reward. Do you understand?
Yes ma’am
I will only give you 2 minutes to complete this
activity.

Time starts now!

Discussion:

This morning we are going to discuss about

the different techniques in separating mixtures.

Hearing the word separation what comes

in your mind?
(answers may vary)
Very good everyone.

( The teacher discuss about the different

techniques in separating mixtures)

There are many ways of separating mixtures; the

techniques in separating mixtures depend on the
type or kind mixtures you have.

Components of mixtures can be separated into

different parts

Solid to solid mixtures can be separated either

through handpicking, sieving, or the use of magnets
Handpicking is the technique used in separating
the solid components
The components of a mixture should be big
enough to be seen and picked by hands
I will show a picture

What can you

Does your bedroom look like these?
Okay class you should help your mother to clean
the bedroom, not only the bedroom but also the
house chores. All of you are already Grade 6. You
should be the model of your younger siblings at
A untidy bedroom teacher
home.
Do you understand class? (answers may vary)

Very well, Let’s just imagine, it’s your bedroom

What will you do first, in cleaning your bedroom?
After picking the clothes, what will you do after?
Okay, after folding?
Very good everyone, because it cannot be placed Yes ma’am
anywhere. Put your clothes in your cabinet.
Another picture.

Pick up the scattered clothes in the floor

We will fold it teacher

Separate it in the bed

This picture
Can we have a volunteer here in front?
Okay, Charry I want you to separate these nips
according to their colors

Did Charry do the right thing?

Do you still remember, when we are still young?
We used to separate the nips according to their
color, Nips
you used your hands by picking things to separate (student wants to volunteer)
solid to solid mixtures is what we called hand
picking.
(Charry will separate nips according to colors)
Sieving is used when two or more components
of different sizes are separated from a mixture Yes maam

Yes maam

This involves the

use of a strainer or big screen to separate the
Mixtures of metals and non-metals could be
separate with the use of magnets

Mixtures that are composed of soluble solid and

liquid components can be also separated by
evaporation through heating, and mixtures that are
compose of insoluble solid and liquid can be
separated through filtration
Evaporation is the technique of separating soluble
solids from liquid through heating.
Class, did you know that some people living in
coastal areas get their salt from seawater? Seawater
is a mixture of salt and water. Exposing it under the
sun will make the water evaporate, leaving the salt
behind. That is what we called evaporation.

Filtration is the technique used to separate

insoluble solid from liquid with the use of a cloth
or filter paper. Like the mixture of water and sand

Example is this tea (showing the class a tea) Tea

leaves is now packed in strainer like tea bags, so
the leaves can be brewed without mixing with the
liquid.
Mixtures with less than substances can be separated
by decantation.
Decantation is the technique used in separating
different densities or solid particles from liquid and
removes insoluble solids from a liquid by slowly
pouring out or scooping the topmost liquid into the
container.

The oil in the water could be also removed using

the decantation technique by pouring the oil into
another container
So, my dear
learners do
you remember
all of the techniques
in separating
mixtures?
That’s great!
Now let’s have our activity time
I will group you into 5 groups
Each group will be assigned to observe in station 1
after I rang the bell the group will proceed to the
next station and the other groups will follow and I
will rang again the bell and the rest of the groups Yes maam
will also proceed.
Do you understand class?
Okay let’s start
For our next activity, we shall enrich what you
have learned about separating mixtures.
Read the sentences carefully and tell what
techniques should be used by matching it with
column B.
Raised your hand if you want to answer.
