Assignment 2

The document contains 13 problems related to determining stresses and strains on structural elements under different loading conditions. The problems involve calculating stresses and strains based on given material properties and loadings. They also involve using Mohr's circle to determine principal stresses and maximum shear stresses on elements oriented at different angles. Solutions require using stress and strain transformation equations as well as constructing and analyzing Mohr's circles.

Worksheet
1. The steel shaft of a socket wrench has a diameter of 80mm and a length of 20mm (see
figure). If the allowable stress in shear is 60MPa. What is the maximum permissible torque
Tmax that may be exerted on with the wrench?
Though what angle (in degrees) will the shaft twist under the action of the maximum
torque?(Assume G=78GPa and disregard any bending of the shaft)

2. A propeller shaft for a small yacht is made of a solid steel bar 104mm in diameter. The
allowable stress in shear is 48MPa, and the allowable rate of twist is 2.00 in 3.5 meters.
Assuming that the shear modulus of elasticity is G=80GPa, determine the maximum
torque Tmax that can be applied to the shaft.

3. A shaft of solid circular cross section consisting of two segments is shown in the first part of the
figure. The left-hand segment has diameter 80mm and length 1.2m; the right-hand segment has
diameter 60mm and length 0.9 m.
Shown in the second part of the figure is a hollow shaft made of the same material and having the
same length. The thickness t of the hollow shaft is d/10. Where d is the outer diameter. Both
shafts are subjected to the same torque.

If the hollow shaft is to have the same torsional stiffness as the solid shaft. What should be its
outer diameter d?

4. An element in plane stress is subjected to stresses as shown below. Determine the stresses
acting on an element oriented at an angle θ=300 from the x-axis, where θ is positive (CCW).
Show these stresses on a sketch of an element oriented a sketch of an element oriented at an
angle θ.

5. An element in plane stress the frame of a given member is oriented at θ=600 on this inclined
element, the normal and shear stresses have the magnitude and directions shown below.
Determine the normal and shear stresses acting on an element whose sides are parallel to the x,y
axis.
