CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Time Management is an essential skill for everyone particularly for students of

any grade level must have in order to make use of their time productively and

efficiently. The ability to allocate time depending on the organized plan of tasks at

hand. A systematic arrangement that would identify and divide the task based on

the urgency and importance, will be prioritized efficiently with effective time

management. Students can have more time to process preparations to produce

greater and better academic performance at school.

There are several factors that affect a student's time management that can

make a difference on their academic performance. The basic factor is their

behavior. Behavior of students based on how they act and respond to any

temptations and situations that can change their schedule. For an instance, Peer

interference and engagement to non-academic activities such as wrong timing of

social gathering that results to abrupt altering of plans. Another factor is the culture

of spaniards that spread and practiced by Filipinos until now is the behavior called

The Mañana Habit that is synonymous to the Filipino expression of 'Mamaya Na'

that means procastination.

Delaying the time to start a certain task, can be a problem once it is done

unnecessarily.

Consequences of pile of workload, cramming, stress and tardiness are some of it.

Many students are prone to being distracted most of the times. Distraction in noise

and irresponsible usage of technology in gadgets such as applications of social

media platforms and online/offline games. It is making the students to take an

irrelevant pause to accomplished thus delaying to complete the assigned work.

Factors mentioned: Behavior (Mañana Habit and Procastination), Peer

Interference(Participating in non-academic events), and Distraction (Social media

and games).

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study was performed to determine the Factors that Affect Time

Management Skills and Its Impact to Academic Performances of Grade 12

Humanities and Social Science at MOREH Academy. Time management is

critical, and it can have an impact on an individual's overall performance and

achievements. Students nowadays frequently complain about not having enough

time to complete all of the tasks assigned to them. Furthermore, the flexibility and

freedom of a university environment can derail students who have not mastered

time management skills. As a result, the purpose of this research is to determine

the relationship between students' time management and academic achievement.

The factor analysis revealed three major time management factors, which can be

classified as time planning, time attitudes, and time wasting. The findings also

revealed that there are no significant differences in time management behaviors

among students based on their gender or race. While year of study and faculty of

students reveal the significant differences in the time management behaviours.

Meanwhile, all the time management behaviours are significantly positively related

to academic achievement of students although the relationship is weak. Time

planning is the most significant correlated predictor.(Razali et al., 2018)

The study also discovered that social media, non-academic discussions with

dorm mates, oversleeping, weather conditions, mental health-related factors

(depression, anxiety, and stress), peer interferences, and participation in non-

academic life are all factors influencing students' time management behaviors.

(Degarege Hailemariam Tessema, 2021)

Time management is very worthwhile issue during to being it a key factor in any

success at all levels of life and for that the term time management is strongly

associated with administrative work. Despite of its importance, it is never an easy

task to manage time individually and a need to specific qualifications along with

many personal skills is then a must. Let alone exploiting the available resources in

order to meet the society and individual needs at the same time and the ability to

adjust with the present and future situations (Alghamdi, 2008, p 49).

To manage time is another sense of distributing priorities and exert efforts upon

that distribution, according to Covey (2004) seven matters a person must give

priorities for, as namely; improving the contacts with others, preparing the activities

more effectively, improving the process of managing and planning for the duties,

caring for the personal interests, seizing new opportunities, improving the personal

skills and information, admitting the power of others.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 1. Paradigm of POSEC Method.

There is a persistent obstacle that many people face, whether they want to

advance in their careers or spend more time with their families: management of

time, the majority of problems we face in life has straightforward solutions that we

can use to achieve our objectives. The magic solution in this instance is something

that we have all heard of before: efficient use of time.

MOREH ACADEMY INC.
SCHOOL OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND EXCELLENCE

Even though the majority of us have heard these words numerous times

throughout our lives, not many of us have been able to effectively manage our

time. Productivity, happiness, and effectiveness all suffer as a result. As you

become responsible for juggling your responsibilities at home and at work, this can

be even more difficult for remote workers.

Rocket Station (2021) introduced a method called POSEC Method, The POSEC

Method is a way to divide your tasks into multiple categories according to

importance, and assigning an ample amount of time and effort to each. The word

POSEC stands for (Prioritizing by Organizing, Streamlining, Economizing, and

Contributing). The technique is loosely based on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of

Needs, which means that, unlike many other tools, POSEC also considers a

person’s personal necessities. For people swamped with work, this becomes a big

deal as they get to plan for their own recreation and self-care, making the process

an exciting experience.

Figure 2, presents the conceptual framework of the study. It consists of two

variables, factors that affect time management as independent variable and

academic performances of students as dependent variable.

Figure 2, Illustrates that there are factors of time management skills that ‘causes

an impact towards academic performances of the student. Wherein, the outcome

of their academic performances will vary depending on how they perform their time

management skills alongside factors affecting it. Being said, how you utilize your

time will generally affect a students’ academic performance, it is important for an
