Prostitution is defined as the exchange of sexual acts or services for payment. It carries health risks like disease transmission and causes societal harms by objectifying women. The main cause of prostitution is financial need, as many enter it to earn money for basic needs or drug habits. Potential solutions include providing job training, poverty alleviation, and medical support to prevent prostitution and help sex workers reintegrate into society. While illegal in the Philippines, prostitution is tolerated with lax enforcement and penalties focus on human trafficking offenses.

ISSUES ON

PROSTITUTION
• What prostitution means?
• Prostitution is the business or practice of engaging in sexual activity in exchange for payment. The
definition of "sexual activity" varies and is often defined as an activity requiring physical contact (sexual
intercourse, non-penetrative sex, oral sex, etc.) with the customer. The requirement of physical contact
also creates the risk of transferring diseases. Prostitution is sometimes described as sexual services,
commercial sex or, colloquially, hooking.

• Definition of prostitution
• At its most basic definition, prostitution can be defined as the exchange of a sexual act (such as sexual
intercourse) for money. State laws have expanded the definition of prostitution to make it a crime to offer,
agree to, or engage in any kind of sexual act for compensation of any kind.

• Many are recruited into prostitution by force, fraud or coercion. Some women need money to support
themselves and their children; others need money to support their drug habits. Abuse is a common theme
in the lives of prostitutes — many were abused as children, either physically or sexually or both.

What are the main causes of prostitution?
• Working for money
Despite the sexual drive, the main reason for prostitution in all groups is
money. “Money is cited by 85% of the prostitutes,” says Kofod. “Some
have to pay for housing, food and day care for their children, others
must pay for their drug abuse, while others want an extra week's holiday
abroad.”
How can we solve the problem of prostitution?

• Training and creating jobs for income generation, poverty alleviation

and hunger reduction are important socio-economic measures aiming
to prevent prostitution from emerging and developing. Organizing
medical treatment, education, job training and creation to help
prostitutes integrate into the community.
Is there a law about prostitution in the Philippines?

• Prostitution in the Philippines is illegal, although somewhat tolerated,

with law enforcement being rare with regards to sex workers. Penalties
range up to life imprisonment for those involved in trafficking, which is
covered by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003.
