Assignment 2

This assignment determines 7% of the student's final mark and contains 4 questions regarding thermodynamics concepts. Question 1 involves calculating mass flow rate, heat transfer rate, and efficiency using measurements from a residential air conditioning system diagram. Question 2 involves determining heat transfer rate, minimum refrigerator temperature, maximum possible power cycle output, and whether a power recovery device should be installed for a refrigerator with given coefficients of performance and power input. Question 3 requires calculating the power developed by a turbine operating between given pressure and temperature states. Question 4 involves calculating the power input and entropy production rate for an insulated compressor operating between given pressure and temperature states with a specified mass flow rate and isentropic efficiency.

MECH3720 Thermodynamics – 2nd Assignment

This assignment determines 7% of your final mark

Student Name ________________________ Student Nr ________________________

Q1 (6 marks)

The figure on the right shows a residential AC system with

several measurements at key locations. The working fluid
is refrigerant 22. Stray heat transfer from the compressor
can be disregarded.

Calculate: 𝑥 =1

a) 𝑚̇ = ____________________ kg/s
b) 𝑄̇ =____________________ kW
c) 𝛽 = ____________________

Q2 (5 marks)
A refrigerator operates at steady-state with a coefficient of performance of 𝛽 = 4.5 and a power input of 0.8 kW.
Energy is rejected from the refrigerator to the surroundings at 20oC by heat transfer from metal coils whose
average surface temperature is 28oC. Determine:
a) Energy transfer from the coils 𝑄̇ =____________________ kW
b) Minimum possible temperature inside the refrigerator 𝑇 = ____________________ oC
c) The maximum power that can be developed by a power cycle operating between the coils and the
surroundings. 𝑃 = ____________________ kW
d) Would you recommend installing such a device to recover this power (short answer and reasoning)

Q3 (4 marks)
Water vapour at 6 MPa, 532oC enters a turbine operating at steady state and expands to 30 kPa. The mass flow
rate is 2.8 kg/s and the isentropic turbine efficiency is 92%. Stray heat transfer and kinetic and potential energy
effects are negligible.

a) Determine the power developed by the turbine 𝑃 =____________________ kW

Q4 (5 marks)
Air enters an insulated compressor operating at steady-state at 1 bar, 350 K with a mass flow rate of 0.1 kg/s and
exits at 4 bar. The isentropic compressor efficiency is 82%. Determine:
a) The power input 𝑃 =____________________ kW
b) The rate of entropy production 𝜎̇ =____________________ kW/K

A correct result contains the correct numerical value AND the correct unit(s)!
