LP4 PeriodicTable 2ndsession

This lesson plan outlines a science lesson for 8th grade students on the periodic table of elements. The objective is for students to be able to use the periodic table to predict the chemical behavior of elements. The lesson contains activities where students arrange elements into words related to the periodic table and complete sentences about the periodic table. It also includes an element scavenger hunt where students identify everyday items containing certain elements. The lesson defines key concepts and discusses the importance of understanding element families and their properties.

Prayer Students A, please lead the prayer.
Greetings Good morning class! How are you today?
Checking of Who’s absent today class monitor?
Attendance
B. ELICIT From our previous meeting, we have already talked about the families in the periodic table. We
have also identified the periods and groups of the elements.
What are the families of the elements?

- Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, non-metals, metalloids,

halogens, other metals, actinides, lanthanides, and noble gases.

What is the arrangement of period in the periodic table?

- Horizontally arranged

What is the arrangement of group in the periodic table?

- Vertically arranged
Who is the Father of Modern Periodic Table?
- Dmitri Mendeleev

What is the basis of arrangement of the elements from top to bottom? Left to right?
- Increasing atomic number

C. ENGAGE Activity 1: Arrange my randomness!

Instruction: Arrange the letters to reveal the word related to the periodic table.

1.) EBLNO GESSA 6.) KALLAI MAETSL

2.) ICEIRPOD ALEBT 7.) HOSGLENA
3.) TLOSLIDEMA 8.) AISNCDTEI
4.) ANDNTHSAILE 9.) CATMIO MUBREN
5.) AKNLELAI ETRHA AETSLM 10.) GILHHY EAIRCVET
Key Answers:
1. NOBLE GASES 6.) ALKALI METALS
2.) PERIODIC TABLE 7.) HALOGENS
3.) METALLOIDS 8.) ACTINIDES
4.) LANTHANIDES 9.) ATOMIC NUMBER
5.) ALKALINE EARTH METALS 10.) HIGHLY REACTIVE

Guide questions:
1.) Which among those words is difficult to guess the right answer?
2.) Which among those words is easy to guess the right answer?
3.) What word is the basis of the arrangement of elements in the periodic table?

D. EXPLORE Activity 2: Complete me!

Instruction: Complete the sentence with the correct word from the box below.

highly reactive actinides alkaline earth metals

metalloids period less reactive

group
increasing
noble gases atomic number high melting

The periodic table is arranged in rows called 1. ________ and columns called 2. _________. The
basis of arrangement of elements in periodic table is 3. ________. There are families in the
periodic table namely alkali metals, 4. _________, transition metals, halogens, noble gases,
5.__________, lanthanides and 6.___________. Alkali metals are 7. ___________ metals.
Alkaline earth metals are also highly reactive but are 8. __________ than alkali metals. Transition
metals are metals that are hard, dense, and have 9. ___________ and boiling points. 10.
_________ are nonreactive gases.

Key answers:
1.) period 6.) actinides
2.) group 7.) highly reactive
3.) increasing atomic number 8.) less reactive
4.) alkaline earth metals 9.) high melting
5.) metalloids 10.) Noble gases

Guide Questions:
1.) How is the period in the periodic table is arranged?
- In row / horizontally.
2.) How is the group in the periodic table is arranged?
- In column / vertically.
3.) What is the difference between alkali metals and alkaline earth metals?
- Both highly reactive metals but alkaline earth metals are less reactive.
4.) Give one example of elements and its application in the world.
- Answers may vary.
5.) Why is it important to know which family an element is in?
- Elements may be categorized according to element families. Knowing how to identify
families, which elements are included, and their properties  helps predict behavior of
unknown elements and their chemical reactions.

E. EXPLAIN Definition of Concepts:

 What is group in periodic tables?
 What is the period in periodic table?
 What are alkali metals?
 What are alkaline earth metals?
 What are noble gases?
 What are transition metals?
 What are non-metals?
 What are metalloids?
 What are the other metals?
 What are lanthanides?
 What are actinides?
How do elements essential in human life and in the world?

F. Activity 3: Element Scavenger Hunt

ELABORATE Objective: To introduce students to the application of elements in the world by having them
identify and locate everyday items that contain certain elements.
Materials:
 Scavenger hunt checklist
 Writing utensils
 Internet access (optional)
Instructions:
1. Divide the class into teams of 5 students.
2. Give each team a scavenger hunt checklist, which lists the names of 10 elements and asks
them to identify an everyday item that contains each element.
3. Explain that the teams must find and identify the items, and write down the name of the
element next to each item on their checklist.
4. If necessary, explain that they can use the internet to research the items.
5. Set a time limit of 15-20 minutes for the scavenger hunt.
6. After the time limit is up, gather the teams together and review the answers as class.
7. Give each team one point for each correct answer.
8. The team with the most points, wins the scavenger hunt.

Scavenger Hunt Checklist:

1. Sodium
2. Iron
3. Oxygen
4. Carbon
5. Calcium
6. Nitrogen
7. Hydrogen
8. Copper
9. Silver
10. Gold

Examples of items that contain each element:

1. Sodium – table salt (sodium chloride)
2. Iron – nails, scissors, or a cast iron skillet
3. Oxygen – air, water (H2O)
4. Carbon – pencil lead, charcoal, or a diamond ring
5. Calcium – milk, cheese, or eggshells
6. Nitrogen – fertilizer, plant food, or the air we breathe
7. Hydrogen – water (H2O), hydrogen peroxide
8. Copper – pennies, electrical wiring, or plumbing pipes
9. Silver – jewelry, coins, or mirrors
10. Gold – jewelry, coins, or electronic (e.g. circuit boards)

Guide Questions:
a) What are some common uses of these elements you identified in our everyday lives?
b) What impact do these elements have on the environment and natural systems?
c) How do these elements play a role in the functioning of the human body and other living
organisms?
d) Why is there a potential risk in exposure to some elements?

Variations:
 Make the scavenger hunt a race by setting a shorter time limit and giving bonus points to
the first team to complete the list.
 Have each team come up with their own element and item for the class to guess.
 Instead of a written scavenger hunt, have students take pictures of the items and share
them with class.
G. True or False: Write AGREE if the statement is correct and write DISAGREE if it is not.
EVALUATE 1. Elements helium (He), argon (Ar), and neon (Ne) are noble gases. AGREE
2. Elements hydrogen (H) and helium (He) is in period 1. AGREE
3. Metalloids are not metals but has a property of metals. AGREE
4. Groups is the horizontal columns numbered from 1 to 18. DISAGREE
5. There are 8 periods in periodic table of elements. DISAGREE
H. EXTEND Assignment:
Define the following terms:
1. Semiconductors
2. Luster
3. Malleability
4. Ductility
5. Conductivity
6. Reactivity
7. Corrosion
