Lab 5 - Open Loop and Closed Loop System

This document describes a lab experiment comparing the output response of an open-loop and closed-loop control system. Students are instructed to build the open-loop and closed-loop systems in Scilab, run simulations, and observe the output responses. They are then asked to analyze and compare the stability and steady-state error of the two systems, and comment on how changing the PID parameter values in the closed-loop system affects the output response.

 Scientific calculator

3.0 PROCEDURE

Task : Comparison of the Output Response between Open Loop and Closed Loop
System

1. Open a new diagram window

2. Draw the following system block as shown in Figure 5.3 in the new window diagram

Figure 5.3

3. Save the diagram as Open Loop.

4. From main menu, click on Simulation > Setup then set final integration time at 10
second (1.0E01).
5. Run the model and observe output generated from Scope.
6. You may need to adjust graph scale by click Edit > Figure properties to get better
view.
7. Open another new window diagram.
8. Draw the following system block as shown in Figure 5.4 in the new window diagram
Figure 5.4

9. Save the diagram as Closed Loop

10. Double click on the PID block and set the parameters Proportional, Integral and
Derivative as shown in Figure 5.5.

Figure 5.5

11. From main menu, click on Simulation > Setup then set final integration time at 10
second (1.0E01).
12. Run the model and observe output generated from Scope.
13. Change the values of parameters Proportional, Integral and Derivative to 28, 19 and
0.5 respectively and run the model and observe the output generated from Scope.

Assignment

1. Based on the output response that you obtained from Open Loop and Closed
Loop system in Figure 5.3 and 5.4 respectively, give comments on these two
outputs in terms of its stability and steady-state error analysis.
2. What is the advantage of changing the values of PID parameters in step [13]?
Give your comment.
