CHAPTER 3 Same Sex 1
Research Design
This study will utilize a unique sequential exploratory mixed-methods research design to explore
the topic of same-sex marriage in the Philippines. The research will begin with a quantitative
phase, gathering data on public attitudes, legal frameworks, and social outcomes related to same-
sex marriage in the Philippines. Following the quantitative phase, a qualitative phase will be
conducted, involving in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with LGBTQ+
individuals, legal professionals, and policymakers to gain a deeper understanding of their
experiences and viewpoints on same-sex marriage.
A purposive sampling technique will be employed to select participants relevant to the research
topic. Participants will include LGBTQ+ individuals, legal professionals, and policymakers from
various regions in the Philippines. The sample size will be determined by data saturation,
ensuring a wide array of perspectives is represented.
Ethical Considerations
The study will adhere to ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects, including
obtaining informed consent from all participants, maintaining confidentiality and anonymity, and
minimizing potential harm or discomfort to participants. The research will also be conducted
with cultural sensitivity, respecting the beliefs and values of participants from diverse
backgrounds.
Data Gathering Procedure
Quantitative data will be analyzed using advanced statistical techniques, including factor analysis
and regression analysis, to identify significant predictors of public attitudes towards same-sex
marriage in the Philippines. Qualitative data will be analyzed using a unique combination of
thematic analysis and discourse analysis, exploring the underlying meanings and power
dynamics in the participants' narratives on same-sex marriage. The integration of quantitative
and qualitative findings will offer a nuanced understanding of the topic and inform
recommendations for policy and practice in the Philippines.
