1. Introduction to social media

Social media has become an integral part of daily life in the last ten years, with significant

economic, political, and societal implications. While traditional media's influence is dwindling,

social media platforms are being adopted at an unprecedented rate around the world, revealing

the extraordinary nature of the social media phenomenon. For this reason alone, it is critical to

investigate the phenomenon of social media. Because the term "social media" has multiple

meanings, its definition has become highly contested, and it is not always clear what tools,

platforms, and social phenomena count as social media, despite its undeniable integration into

the daily lives of many.

Other than that, is social media began as a way for friends and family to interact, but it was

later adopted by businesses who wanted to take advantage of a popular new form of

communication to reach out to customers. The ability to interact and exchange information with

anyone around the world, or with many people at once, is the power of social media. There are

over 3.8 billion social media users worldwide. Social media is a constantly changing and evolving

field, with new apps like TikTok and Clubhouse seemingly appearing every year, joining the ranks

of established social networks like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. The number of

social media users in the United States is expected to exceed 257 million by 2023.

Furthermore, social media refers to any digital that enables users to generate and share

information with others in real time. Social media encompasses a wide range of websites and

apps. Twitter, for example, focuses on exchanging links and short written messages. Others,

such as Instagram, are designed to make it easier to share photos and videos. What makes

social media unique is that it is both vast and somewhat uninhibited. While many social media

platforms impose limitations, such as removing photographs depicting crime or sexual content,

there are significantly strict limits on what individuals can post than traditional forms of mass

communication, such as magazines, radio stations, and television.

2.1 Introduction of TikTok

TikTok, formerly known as Musical.ly, is a video content creation and sharing app that has

gained the interest of young audiences all over the world. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a

Beijing-based tech firm founded by Chinese billionaire businessman Zhang Yiming. The 38-year-

old was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most powerful individuals in 2019, who defined him

as "the best businessman in the entire globe". Tiktok has 1 billion monthly active users. Out of

4.48 billion active social media users, 22.32% use TikTok on a regular basis. TikTok has become

the most downloaded Apple iOS video app as a result of its structure, new tech, and surrounding

cultural conditions, with youth ages 13 to 18 constituting half of the 500 million monthly users.

5
CSC134
2.2 The Uniqueness of TikTok

TikTok has become one of the biggest social media platforms, with a rapidly growing user

base. Here are the reasons why so many people are still addicted to TikTok and why they are

unlikely to stop using it real soon.

• The Algorithm and the "For You" Page

The app's content discovery feed, also known as the "For You" page or FYP, is the main

reason why so many young teens and people of every age are mostly obsessed to TikTok.

This page serves as the app's main timeline and is where users can discover new content.

TikTok is driven by a proprietary algorithm that employs AI and artificial learning to populate

the FYP with the most relevant content to show a specific user. Other than that the app

meticulously tracks which types of videos you primarily interact with in order to discover your

interests. For example, if you like, comment on, or share videos about the exterior, you'll see

more videos about the exterior in your feed.

• TikTok’s videos trend

TikTok's dominance is also due to the popularity of trends, such as dance challenges for hit

songs or videos connected with popular in-app filters. The algorithm prioritizes content that

corresponds to popular online trends at the time. Because hot trends tend to garner more

attention, other users will widely use in different in and make videos that corresponds to those

trends. TikTok's audio system is a major reason why trends emerge. When a user uploads

a video, the audio from that video can be lip-synced or used by other users. For example,

when someone produces a remix of a famous song, that audio clip might be used in millions

of other video content in the future.

• TikTok communities

Finally, TikTok hosts a wide variety of content. TikTok communities are groups of videos and

content producers that are distinguished by similar videos, audio clips, and hashtags. Every

niche subject is likely to have thousands of users creating videos on that subject. For

example, "cottage-core" is a TikTok subculture that focuses on fantasy aesthetic appeal as

well as videos of houses in the wooded area. TikTok communities devoted to building

houses, scooping desserts, mixing paints, and animating organization logos have thousands

of views. The variety of topics contributes to the size of the userbase, both within terms of

viewers and content providers. It also encourages a wide range of companies to participate

the app and produce content to promote their goods.

3.0 Instagram

3.1 Introduction of Instagram

Instagram is a social media platform that allows users to share photos via the Internet

using an application that enables people to modify their pictures by applying filters and share

their pictures on a variation of many other social media platforms. Typically, photos are

modified or changed in order to gain more 'likes' from one's peers and followers. 'Likes' are

a concept created specifically for the context of social media that allows a person to indicate

their acceptance in content posted to another person's social media portal. Likes on social

media indicate that a photo, message, or relate is of interest to others and has attracted

attention. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger founded Instagram, an image and clip sharing

social networking service. Furthermore, Instagram currently has much more than 1.22 billion

active users every month. This app is used by 25.31% of the world’s population and the

highest number of users of Instagram is in 230.5 million in India, 159.75 million in US and

119.45 million in Brazil. The target audience of the Instagram application are those between

the ages of 14 to 40.

3.2 The uniqueness of Instagram

Instagram has become the main application that teenager uses to communicate with other

people or post something to their Instagram’s page. Instagram is distinct from other social

media platforms in a variety of ways. Here’s are some uniqueness of Instagram:

• Has the most beautiful filter

Instagram has no competition when it comes to filters. The filtering process is aesthetically

appealing. It is the best way to conceal your age and flaws. So, embrace this deception, and

you will be able to deceive your followers in the most effective way.

• It is a fun application

Instagram is all about taking photos, applying filters, and making them look appealing and

fun. Furthermore, sharing this lovely image makes me happy. Additionally, to boost the

popularity of your photos taken, you can add hashtags to your photos so that when people

search for that specific hashtag, they can find your images. As a result, your content has a

better chance of going viral on Instagram than on other social media platforms.

4.0 Snapchat

4.1 Introduction to Snapchat

Snapchat is a mobile app available for both Android and iOS devices. Users of the

app commonly refer to it as Snap. Meanwhile, Snapchat’s developer is a publicly traded

company called Snap. The company claims to be a camera manufacturer. (As a result, it

develops other products, including hardware, such as Snapchat Spectacles.) Snap, whatever

you want to call it, is led by co-founder Evan Spiegel. One of the key concepts of the mobile

app is that any image, video, or message you deliver by default is only available to the

recipient for a short period of time before becoming unavailable. The app’s temporary or

ephemeral nature was intended to encourage a more natural movement of interaction.

Snapchat is used by 54.4% of the female population and 44.6% of the male population, and

it now has over 293 million daily active users worldwide. Snapchat’s application’s audience

is 75% of Snapchat users under the age of 34, and 90% of Snapchat users are between the

ages of 13 and 24.

16
CSC134
4.2 The uniqueness of Snapchat

• Snapback

This call was more dominant when Snapchat was introduced, but it has faded since then.

However, if you have listened to it, you will know in your bones that it simply implies a

response to a break. So, if you Snapback, you are simply reacting to a personal one-on-one

break. It is one of Snapchat’s most distinctive features.

• Tale

You can possibly link snaps together and also programme them as you catch them. They will

appear as a “tale” reel for fans. They may be able to tap into your story as well as enjoy every

pause to experience your entire day. A reel can only be repeated for 24 hours before

disappearing completely, but you can always save your entire story, or a private break from

your story, to the Snapchat Memory area also known as exclusive storage capacity to keep

forever. Overall, one of Snapchat’s most distinctive features.

• Snap code

It is a scannable code that simplifies the process of adding new friends. A good friend, for

example, could simply blink their Snapchat video camera at your Snapcode. Which will

almost certainly include you. You do not have to manually look for their control and also tap

the “include” switch. Your Snap code, which looks like a QR code, may be visible on the

Account display. You may be able to access it by touching the ghost symbol or your Bitmoji

in the Video cam display’s edge. Making it one of Snapchat’s most distinctive features.

5.0 Twitter

5.1 Introduction to Twitter

Twitter is an online information and social networking site where users exchange

short messages known as tweets. Tweeting is the practice of sending short messages to

anyone who follows you on Twitter in the hope that your words will be beneficial and

interesting to someone in your viewer. Microblogging is another term for Twitter and tweeting.

Other than that, Jack Patrick Dorsey is a co-founder and former CEO of Twitter. Most of

Twitter’s users are 17 to 34 years old. For now, Twitter has 396.5 million of users. To put

that into context, Twitter accounts for 8.85% of the global social media user base.

20
CSC134
5.2 The Uniqueness of Twitter

• Always know what’s new

With the Twitter app we will be able to find out what is happening in our world. For example,

we can find out what is being talked about in a Korean country or a country far away from

us. With Twitter also we can quickly find out the news as opposed to watching the news on

television.

• Scheduled tweets

If you like to plan ahead, you can try Scheduling Tweets to post the content later. Both

organic and promoted-only Tweets can be scheduled for future delivery and as needed.

Any product that will be released later can be scheduled in advance. If you are away for a

month or a week, you can keep the posts going by scheduling them ahead of time and

engaging your audience.

• Spaces

Spaces is a gathering place built around the voices of Twitter users, your Twitter

community. Spaces are active for as long as they are open; once closed, they are no longer

publicly available on Twitter.

CSC134
6.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, basically indeed social media is very important to us nowadays. This is

because with the availability of social media we will be able to learn new things and also be able to

find out what things are being talked about all over the place. But using social media too often will

make us lazy to do daily activities such as spending time with family and doing healthy activities. Me

as a teenager also like to use social media. I often watch videos on the TikTok app because the app

contains videos that involve knowledge as well as funny videos. So, with that I will gain knowledge

and also joy through the app. Therefore, in my opinion, social media isn't bad but it can help me

figure out what it's supposed to be. Next, we need to be good at using social media in the right

direction. Nowadays there is pornographic content on social media apps. As parents, they should

monitor their child's use of social media for safety purposes.
