3.06 CONCRETE FINISHING: (OR REFERRED TO ENG.'S SPEC.)

A. After striking off and consolidating concrete, smooth the surface by screeding and floating. Use hand
methods only where mechanical floating is not possible. Adjust the floating to compact the surface
and produce a uniform texture.
B. After floating, test surface for trueness with a 10-foot long straight edge. Distribute concrete as
required to remove surface irregularities, and refloat repaired areas to provide a continuous, smooth
finish.
C. Work edges of slabs, gutters, back top edge of curb, and formed joints with an edging tool, and round
to 1/2-inch radius, unless otherwise indicated. Eliminate tool marks on concrete surface.
D. After completion of floating and when excess moisture or surface sheen has disappeared, complete
surface finishing as follows:
1. Broom Finish Concrete: Lightly comb concrete surface with a medium-stiff broom after
trowelling is complete.
2. Sandblast Finish Concrete: (Where noted on the drawings): Allow concrete to set up.
Sandblast to a uniform and true finish to match the accepted sample. Sandblast face of steps,
walls, and curbs including reveals. Sandblast visible sections of wall, and 2 inches below top
of planter on the inside planter surfaces prior to placement of any waterproofing.
3. Washed Aggregate Concrete: Float finish slabs and seed the surface with specified and
accepted special aggregate to provide uniform dense overall coverage without holidays or
skips. Tamp aggregate level with top of concrete. Immediately spread a uniform coating of
surface retarder over full area to be exposed. Within an 8-24 hour period (depending upon
temperature and climate), reveal aggregate by washing and scrubbing away the sand/cement
surface layer. Retarder must be dry before washing aggregates. After curing is complete,
wash entire surface with 1:16 muriatic acid solution and flush thoroughly with water.

Shma Co., Ltd. 93/2 Ekkamai Soi 3 Sukhumvit 63 Klongton Nuer Vadhana Bangkok Thailand T: 662 390 1977 F: 662 390 1974E: [email protected] 29

insure that no damage is done to the site drainage system or its ability to function after washed
aggregate concrete paving is installed.
4. Provide a broomed or sandblasted finish on the treads of concrete steps as noted in the
drawings. Except where noted to be sandblasted or tiled, remove forms for risers as soon as
concrete has set, and plaster surfaces with matching color cement grout and trowel smooth.
E. Do not remove forms for 24 hours after concrete has been placed, unless otherwise acceptable to S.O.
After form removal, clean ends of joints and point up any minor honeycombed areas. Remove and
replace areas or sections with major defects, as directed by the Landscape Architect.

3.07 CURING: (OR REFERRED TO ENG.'S SPEC.)

A. Do not use curing compounds on surfaces when their use may be detrimental to bonding of concrete,
caulking, sealants or other surface finish or coating. Use curing-hardener-sealant type compounds for
exposed slabs. Curing compounds will not be permitted on surfaces to receive deck coatings,
elastomeric coatings and fluid applied waterproofing.
B. For integral color concrete, use curing compounds compatible with color finish. Do not use curing
paper for curing coloured concrete.
C. Curing Compound:
1. Apply immediately following completion of specified finishing.
2. When applying compound, keep the surfaces damp but free from standing water.
3. Cover surfaces with a uniform and even film of compound, as supplied. Apply in a single coat,
using pressurized spray equipment, to achieve total coverage as recommended by
manufacturer.
4. When curing compound is applied inside enclosed spaces, provide and maintain adequate
mechanical ventilation throughout the periods of application.

3.08 PATCHING: (OR REFERRED TO ENG.'S SPEC.)

A. Within 3 days after stripping formwork, fill and patch surface defects such as rock pockets,
honeycombs, cracks, and holes. The Landscape Architect will distinguish between concrete which
requires replacement or repair and surface defects which requires patching. Permission to patch any
area will not construe as a waiver of the S.O.'s right to require complete removal of the defective work
if the patching, in his opinion, does not satisfactorily restore the quality and appearance of the surface.

Shma Co., Ltd. 93/2 Ekkamai Soi 3 Sukhumvit 63 Klongton Nuer Vadhana Bangkok Thailand T: 662 390 1977 F: 662 390 1974E: [email protected] 30
B. Remove fine and loose material from surfaces which are to receive waterproofing or damp-proofing,
and patch voids and cracks.
C. Chip away loose material from areas to be patched to a min. depth of 1" and thoroughly wet for at least
6 inches surrounding the patch. Coat areas with thin brush coat of fine sand-cement grout follow by
patching mortar. Prepare patching mortar of the same material and proportions as used for concrete,
except remove coarse aggregate. Where exposed concrete is to remain unpainted, make trial
patches using combinations of white cement and cement used in concrete mix and allow to set up in
order to verify that the patching mortar matches the color of the adjacent concrete surface. Keep
water in the mix to a minimum. Do not re-temper mortar by adding water. Allow mortar to stand for
one hour prior to use and mix to prevent setting.
Compact mortar thoroughly into place and screed to leave patch slightly higher than surrounding
surfaces. Leave area undisturbed for 1 to 2 hours to permit initial shrinkage. Then finish patch to
match adjacent surfaces.
D. Plug form tie holes in sandblasted concrete surfaces using precast plugs. Install plugs using
adhesive that effectively seals form tie metal from moisture and thoroughly and permanently bonds
plug to concrete. Seat plugs in rear of holes so that faces are uniformly set back from face of concrete.
Avoid adhesive stains on exposed surfaces. Install plugs prior to sandblasting.
E. Patch form tie holes not otherwise specified and finish flush with adjacent surface. For holes passing
entirely through walls, use a plunger type 'grease gun' or other suitable device to completely fill holes.

3.09 DEFECTIVE WORK, REPAIRS, AND PROTECTION: (OR REFFERED

TO ENG.'S SPEC.)

A Finish which is not true to line and plane, (max. 1/8" deviation in 10'-0"), which is not in conformance
with specified finish and appearance requirements, which exceeds specified tolerances, which does
not properly connect to adjoining work, which does not slope to drain and which has been improperly
cured, will be deemed as defective. Remove defective work and replace with proper work.
B. Drill test cores where directed by S.O, if necessary to determine magnitude of cracks or defective
areas. Fill drilled core holes in satisfactory pavement areas with Portland cement concrete bonded to
pavement with polysulphide-epoxy binder, or with polysulfide-resin grout, complying with FS MMM-G-
650.
C. Protect concrete from damage until acceptance of work. Exclude traffic and dead loads from
pavement for at least 10 days after placement. When construction traffic is permitted, maintain
pavement as clean as possible by removing surface stains and spillage of materials as they occur.

3.01 PROTECTION: Protect concrete sidewalks, curbs and bases, fences and other improvements adjacent to
the operations. You are responsible for any damage caused by your employees or equipment. Make
necessary repairs to the satisfaction of the Owner. The Landscape Architect may require that building and
other surfaces be covered with paper or other protection.

3.02 SUBGRADE:

A. Check finished elevations of the sub-base to insure that they are as required to produce the elevations
for the finished surfacing as indicated on the drawings. These grade elevations may be slightly
modified at their intersections, eased and warped to existing grades at the edges of property, as
checked and verified by the Landscape Architect.

3.03 BASE COURSE:

A. Place a compacted aggregate base course in thickness as indicated on the drawings, over the
finished, compacted subgrade, where appropriate. Apply base course during dry weather and over a
dry subgrade. Spread aggregate base equipment that will provide a uniform layer conforming to the
planned section both transversely and longitudinally, within the thickness tolerance specified without
recourse to drifting, spotting, or otherwise shifting material, or which does not otherwise cause
segregation of the material.
B. Installation:
1. Water aggregate bases which occur on-grade as required, and compact by rolling with 3-
wheel steel tired rollers weighing not less than 12 tons, or with other compaction as deemed
practical and acceptable by the Landscape Architect.
2. Compact aggregate bases which occur on compacted soil in a manner approved by the
Landscape Architect. ubmit proposed method of compaction to the Landscape Architect for
acceptance relative to the weight and load.
C. The relative compaction of each layer of compacted base material not less than 95% of that
determined by ASTM 1557-78.
D. Tolerance: The thickness of the finished base shall not vary more than 1.50 cm. from the planned
thickness at any point. Re-shape or re-work base which does not conform to the above requirements,
water and thoroughly re-compact to conform to the specified requirements.

3.04 TURF PAVE UNIT INSTALLATION:

A. Make sure pavers are clean and free of foreign materials before installation.
B. Start installation from a corner or straight edge and proceed forward over the undisturbed sand laying
course.
C. Set paving work plumb, level and true to line and grade. Install to properly coincide and align with
adjacent work and elevations. Retain all edges to secure the perimeter paving blocks and sand laying
course.
1. Install sand layer as indicated on the drawings over the properly installed and compacted
aggregate base course.
2. Install turf pave paving blocks hand-tight and level on the undisturbed sand laying course.
String lines may be used to hold pattern lines true
