- Correlate duties to profession, employers and society
- Classify professional obligations and duities
Engineer Management is concerned with the design, installation and improvement of intergrated system
of people, material, information, equipment and energy by drawing upon specialized knowledge and
skills in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of
engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the resultsto be obtaines from such
systems.
Engineering management is the fusion of business and engineering principles. By having knowledge
of economics and management, they can forecast or predict the utility, advantages, disadvantages of
the product and also it’s contribution in growth.
It is also known as a career that brings together the technological problem-solving savvy of
engineering and organizational, administrative and planning abilities of management in order to
oversee complex enterprise from conception to completion.
Example areas of engineering management area are:
Product development
Manufacturing
Construction
Design Engineering
Industrial Engineering
Technology
Production
Managers within the field of engineering are trained to understand human resources management, finances,
industrial psychology, quality control, operations research and environmental management.

The Functions Of Engineering
1. Research
– where the engineer is engaged in the process of learning
about nature and codifying this knowledge into usable
theories.
2. Design and development
– where the engineer undertakes the activity of turning a
product concept to a finished physical items. Design for
manufacturability and value engineering teams (a feature
of some companies) are charged with improvement of designs
and specifications at the research, development, design, and
production stages of product development.
3. Testing
– where the engineer works in a unit where new products or
parts are tested for workability.
The Functions Of Engineering
4. Manufacturing
– where the engineer is directly in charge of production
personnel or assumes responsibility for the product.
5. Construction
– this is where the construction engineer (civil
engineer usually) is directly in charge of the construction
personnel or may have responsibility for the quality of the
construction process.
6. Sales
- 0 where the engineer assists the company’s customers to
meet their needs, especially those that require technical
expertise.
The Functions Of Engineering
7. Consulting
– where the engineer works as consultant of any individual or
organization requiring his services.
8. Government
– where the engineer may find employment in the government
performing any of the various tasks in regulating, monitoring, and
controlling the activities of various institutions, public or private.
9. Teaching
– where the engineer gets employment in a school and is assigned
as a teacher of engineering courses. Some of them become deans,
vice presidents, and presidents.
10. Management
– where the engineer is assigned to mange groups of people
performing specific tasks.
The Field Of Engineering Management
1. to perform a variety of tasks depending on their specialization and job level.
• It is important to the engineer to perform his job effectively and
efficiently.
2. to identify the skills required which the engineer did not possess.
• As engineers, they are not directly trained to deal with people, so that
some exposure to engineering management activities will most often be
on people-based skills.
3. to provide technical management and organizational leadership for engineering
projects and technical organizations.
• Engineering Management is a specialized form of management that is
required to successfully lead engineering or technical personnel and
projects..
4. to achieve organizational objectives effectively and efficiently.
• The successful engineering manager must have the skills
necessary to coach, mentor and motivate technical professionals.

Engineering Management Concentrations
Depending on her educational background and prior work experience, an engineering management major may
be able to customize her professional development by selecting specific courses that complement her career.
Possible specialties to pursue include:
1. Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management.
When engineering management professionals in this sector do their jobs well, citizens hardly notice. That's
because the very best crisis and risk managers use sophisticated computer models and training scenarios to
prevent catastrophes. Government agencies and insurance companies employ skilled engineering managers to
lead teams of researchers to fully understand weaknesses in construction, civil, and military programs.
2. Economics, Finance, and Cost Accounting.
It may seem like overkill to hire an engineer to oversee a team of accountants. But a skilled engineering
manager can use his communication skills to motivate his staff members while relying on his problem-solving
skills to find new processes to automate or streamline procedures.
3. Environmental and Energy Management.
As oil prices skyrocket and fossil fuels become scarce, utility companies and auto manufacturers are scrambling
to meet the energy needs of future generations. Engineering management specialists travel the world to deploy
innovative new systems that generate power from wind, water, and other renewable sources. Other
engineering managers lead teams that design efficient cars, computers, and generators, to prevent us from
irreversibly damaging the planet.

4. Knowledge Management.
Many workers in small offices get a handle on a company's trends by hanging around the water cooler. Today's
international conglomerates often employ tens of thousands of workers, spread out over a few continents. When
the water cooler is the size of the Pacific Ocean, engineering management specialists step in to design systems and
processes that keep team members informed about their projects, no matter what country they happen to be in at
the moment.
5. Management and Reliability of Infrastructure Systems.
Engineering management specialists oversee the operation of power lines, canals, dams, drawbridges, and other
vital pieces of infrastructure that we often take for granted. By leading teams of planners and researchers,
engineering managers can maximize taxpayer investment in these operations by building reliable facilities that
perform efficiently over the long haul.
6. Operations Research and Management Science.
At first, this specialty can seem like an exercise in corporate navel gazing. In fact, engineering managers can analyze
the ways that companies communicate and operate in order to make recommendations for efficiency. As a result,
companies run more smoothly and employees don't have to waste as much time on repetitive tasks.
7. Software Engineering and Information Systems Management.
Today's complex software requires development teams of hundreds or even thousands of skilled programmers.
Engineering management graduates coordinate the efforts of specialists so that their final product runs smoothly.

Engineering management is distinguished by the technologically
advanced nature and skills of the projects and workers. Most
engineering managers are former engineers whose technical
expertise allows them to oversee effectively employees, projects,
and production lines in high-tech industries, such as semiconductor
and aerospace component manufacturing, as well as scientific
research and development in sectors, such as biomedicine.
Supervise Engineers, Technicians, and Designers
Engineering managers supervise the employees in the technology-driven
departments within an organization, including both the technicians and
the support staff. In high-tech companies, such as aerospace and
electronics component manufacture, engineering managers oversee the
design and production processes.
Direct Projects
Worker supervision operates alongside directing the projects that the workers are
involved in, be it research and development in pharmaceutical or biomedical fields,
production and quality control in manufacturing plants, or product development
and fabrication in industries. An engineering manager may be placed in charge of a
facility, such as a manufacturing plant and may direct the design, operation, and
maintenance of the facility. Engineering managers are in charge of operations that
rely on technical expertise.
What Are the Job Duties of Someone in Engineering Management?
Set Technical Goals for the Organization
Within the broader goals set by organization executives, engineering management
personnel set the technology goals for the organization. Those in engineering
management have both the business and technical knowledge to identify how
science and engineering can further the aims of the organization. Engineering
managers identify new technology-driven opportunities for company expansion or
new product development. When goals are not met, engineering managers
examine technological reasons for the failure and develop solutions.

What Types of Laws Do Engineers Need to Know?
Engineering and law may not seem to have much in common, but laws affect every
profession in some way. Engineers deal with highly technical concepts, designs
and products, and the laws affecting an engineer’s work can be as complex as the
work itself. While engineers may be reluctant to devote time to a subject like the law,
there are some laws that engineers should be familiar with in order to avoid
problems during their careers.
SO ENGINEERS NEED TO STUDY LAW BECAUSE OF :
Engineers and engineering managers need to have a working knowledge
of the laws that affect their work so that they can do the following:
Follow regulations.
Stay compliant with governmental ordinances.
Avoid lawsuits.
Negotiate contracts.
