DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS


STATIVE VERBS

Exercise 18: Look at these set of sentences and explain the differences between them.

a) Water boils at 100ºC vs. The water is boiling


b) Do you speak English? vs. Are you speaking English?
c) I always get hungry at last hour vs. I’m getting hungry
d) Many people learn Italian vs. Jen is learning Italian
e) My parents live in London vs. My parents are living in a cottage
f) He works really hard vs. He’s working hard today

Exercise 19: Read the sentences and decide if the tense used is correct or incorrect. If it is
incorrect, you must correct it.

- Ice melts at 0ºC or 32ºF


- How often are you going to the gym?
- Javier tries to find a job, but he hasn’t had any luck yet.
- Martha gives her mother a call every night
- The moon goes around the earth in about 27 days
- Can you hear them? What do they talk about?
- Paul is late. He always oversleeps

Exercise 20: Some verbs are called stative because we tend to use them in simple tenses.
Look at these verbs, write a sentence with each of them and decide if you usually write them
in present simple or present continuous.

Exercise 22: Choose the right option.
