Formation Damage
Formation Damage
Formation Damage
1. Calculate the skin factor resulting from the invasion of the drilling fluid to a radius of 2
feet. The permeability of the skin zone is estimated at 20 md as compared with the
unaffected formation permeability of 60 md. The wellbore radius is 0.25 ft.
2. An oil well was completed on a formation having a permeability of 600 mD with wellbore
diameter equals 7" and drainage radius, re = 600 ft. The drilling mud used to drill the well
invaded 2 inches deep in formation leaving a damaged of 100 mD . Calculate the skin
factor and the productivity ratio of this well.
Mud Type A B C D
Permeability in Damaged Zone (mD) 100 20 300 200
Depth of invasion (ft) 1.6 0.8 2 2.3
The drilling mud used to drill the well controls the extent of permeability impairment and
the depth of damaged region extends beyond the wellbore.
Decide which mud type should be used with respect to the Skin Damage and the
Productivity ratio for each one.
