Lab7 Circulatory Disturbances

This document contains images and descriptions of various circulatory disturbances and thrombotic events observed during gross (visual) examination of organs and tissues. These include chronic venous congestion of the liver showing dark red regions, intracerebral hemorrhage appearing as blood accumulating in brain ventricles, and images demonstrating thrombi, emboli, and infarcts in various locations such as the heart, lungs, arteries, and veins.

Chronic venous congestion : Liver

The cut section of the liver shows dark red congested regions that represent
accumulation of RBCs in centrilobular regions. The lighter brown regions
represent normal portal tracts giving a nutmeg liver appearance.

Chronic venous congestion : Liver

There is fatty change around central venules of the hepatic lobule
while the peripheral part around the portal area looks normal.

Intracerebral hemorrhage : Brain

Blood accumulation within the lateral ventricles with formation
of soft gelatinous clot.

Hemopericardium : Heart
Ruptured infarcted left ventricular wall with accumulation of blood
filling the pericardial cavity causing cardiac tamponade.

Post mortem clot: Pericardium

Post mortem clot in the pericardial sac showing glistening dark red
area of red blood cells and the chicken fat like area that represents
the plasma.

Thrombosis : Femoral vein

A segment of the common femoral vein has an attached
thrombus which appears red in color.

Coronary artery thrombosis: Heart

The left anterior descending coronary artery contains a recent
thrombus causing obstruction of the upper part of the artery. The
lower part of the coronary artery is narrowed by atherosclerosis
(arrow).

Mural thrombus : Heart

The left ventricle is hypertrophied with thickened trabeculae
carneae. A red-brown thrombus is attached to the endocardium.

Saddle embolus : Aorta

A large brown embolus lies across the aortic bifurcation and
thrombus extends into both common iliac arteries which originated
from an atherosclerotic plaque in the abdominal aorta.

Saddle pulmonary embolism: Heart

A large coiled-up embolus lies within the right ventricular outflow tract extending
to the bifurcation of the pulmonary artery and its branches.

Infarction : Spleen
The spleen shows a sharply demarcated pale infarct (white infarct).

Infarction: Lung
Hemorrhagic, roughly wedge-shaped pulmonary infarct (red infarct).
