Unit 8 - Statement of Aims
Unit 8 - Statement of Aims
STATEMENT OF AIMS
Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.
The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

narrative film, I would say it would be an experimental short film as I
experimental short will be playing with some colours, texts and video
film, experimental clips of certain movements/props but then I would
animation, have a split screen up playing which shows the exact
cinemograph, time- opposite, so I would say its experimental.
lapse etc. )
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Since the start of the year, all those 7 units set us up for the possibilities of the FMP. I
believe each unit was linked to. The first unit pretty much just taught us the basics of using
a video camera, went through the different shot types with the meanings of them. This then
led onto us doing couple of units at once, one of them taught us how to animate. In my
eyes, animation is not something made for me, I don’t draw really well therefore I will just
drop it out of my project. Photography was great in a sense that I was taught how to use a
camera properly, therefore I know how to capture certain moments of life in nature. This will
be useful in my project if any images will be included. Unit 4 taught us the basics of
presenting products to a certain target audience. This is extremely useful and is a key in my
project as this is what will help me to connect and link to the people who will be watching
my project. Overall, video was something that really caught my attention. It was the reason
why I chose this course in the first place, but it’s something that I already have some
experience with and that is something I enjoy anyway. In conclusion, most of the things we
have been doing all built up to this moment.
The aim of my project is to present the feelings of “what if”. It will be based on the themes of
Time and Movement, perhaps some Colour as well. This will be done by me having a split screen
which means two videos will be playing on one screen at once, however one of the screens will
be showing the exact opposite of what’s happening on the other one. If I had the colour black
on the screen, then I would have white on the other one. I think this is really creative, however it
will probably be really time consuming as I will have to produce pretty much two videos at once.
The research linked to this project will be heavily based on me trying to find out what the good
sides of making a video which shows the “alternative universe” of something that’s happening. I
believe it will be really hard to research for this specific project, but there are plenty of examples
where I could get some information from, perhaps there is a game called The Witcher 3: Wild
Hunt, where there is an extension pack which allows the player to pick two really different
outcomes.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
Recording my progress will not be hard at all. Something I’ve started already and is a good way
to reflect on that day’s work is to create a production diary. In this diary, I can just quickly write
a brief note of what I’ve done that day, perhaps what I’m planning on doing for the following
day. This is also helping me to plan ahead so that I will know the order in which I want to get
things out the way. So, it’s pretty much helping me to keep organised, but it will also show the
examiner how I’ve went through the process of making my project. This should be consistent,
should be done each day on which I have worked on the project and it should be about how I
think that day’s work went, how I could maybe improve it. In my production diary, I would also
include things that I looked at and found interesting, perhaps took them into consideration as
that will affect the outcome of my project by taking it into a different direction.
Proposed Research Sources
Since I am planning on including different songs and audio effects in the project, I would have to
do some research to find songs which are copyright free and are really different in style. I also
want to include some visual texts, perhaps some slangs used in today’s world. Primary Research
would be really important in my case as that is the way for me to find out more by asking the
people a couple of questions related to my project. This could be done via Microsoft Forms, it’s a
great way of quizzing people. Firstly, I would ask really broad questions which are so opened
that the answers could be anything. Once I collected and analysed those answers, I would
simply create a second Microsoft Form purely based on the most popular response therefore
this will allow me to only zoom in and focus on what’s relevant for the majority. For Secondary
research, I would simply have a look at similar themed short films, videos and games where I
would firstly make my own opinion on it, then I would go to the comment section (if it’s enabled
on YouTube) and I would have a read through of what people thought about it, perhaps what
people didn’t like about it. This will definitely help me decide what to include and what to let go
from my project. I can also have a look at major and minor keys on a piano, that’s a really good
example of opposite and I believe there are loads of opinion-based videos made about them on
YouTube.
Equipment Required
The only things I need to make this project is a video camera, a tripod which goes with the
camera and Adobe Premiere Pro. I was thinking of including some pictures in the project as well,
but those can be made with a video camera as well so in that case I would use Lightroom and
Photoshop as well. I also need to think about what types of props I would want to represent in
my project which best represents this feeling of differentiation.
Resources Required
This project only really needs me, a video camera and an editing software, which I already have.
I will also have to think about the locations where I’m planning to film, also if I want to include
any personnel in my project (not at the moment).
Skills to develop/learn
I think I know all the skills I will need for the making of this project. I think I have everything the
video needs, but this might change as I move closer to the actual making of it. Personally, I
don’t think that I have an issue with any technical skills since I know my way around Premiere
Pro, I know where to find everything but I can’t really find my style of editing at the moment, I
just include edits which I can do but that’s all. Communication isn’t really a component of the
skills required for this specific project as I will be working all on my own.
I am currently struggling a little bit with photoshop, so that might be a skill that I would need
some help with.
Personnel and responsibilities
In the making of my final major project, I will be the only personnel taking part in the making
of it. I may ask my lecturers for some help, but other than that the work is all done by
myself.
My target audience is just everyday people. This includes people in between the ages of 12
up to 50, perhaps some older people who understand the depths of the internet. Since the
project will be a mix of different things, such as colours, nature, texts and songs so I can’t
really identify what types of interests it will include as it will be a mix of nature, song,
colours and a few more things. After everything is finished, I need to take my exhibition
space into consideration. It is basically me dressing up my working place in the theme
which best represents my overall project. I am planning on doing a similar thing for the
exhibition space where I would put a few objects on the left side of the desk and then I
would find items that are the opposite of the ones on the left and those would be on the
right side, just like in the video itself.
Making my project loop will be quite easy in my opinion. I was planning on opening the
videos with a black screen and a white screen, then the ending would be pretty much the
same but with different colours, maybe blue and red. It would just have to be similar to the
beginning.
1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT
2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).
3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.
4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP
5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve
over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.
6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.
8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
