6th Sem QN Papers - 1

This document contains an examination for a Chemical Engineering course on Modern Separation Techniques. It consists of 8 questions worth varying marks. The first part contains 2 short answer questions worth 2 marks each, requiring students to briefly explain two conventional separation techniques and the three regimes of surface-based solid-liquid separation. The second part contains a longer 12 mark question involving calculation of adsorption isotherm constants from data provided or explaining a recent trend in separation techniques based on size and surface properties. The final 15 mark question requires a detailed explanation of cross flow filtration and electrofiltration or describing the various types of equipment used for adsorption.

1. Give the state space and transfer function model of a first order process with time

2. What is the role of a zero in the dynamic response of a process?
3. Depict graphically the types of step response behaviours possible in a second

6. (a) A liquid-phase first-order isothermal reaction is performed in a well-stirred

reactor. The reactor is open to the atmosphere allowing the volumne of the liquid in

it to vary. The exit flow is driven by gravity and its volumetric flowrate is given
by: F = K,NV where K is a constant and V is the volume of the contents of

the reactor. For a first order reaction, the rate of reaction for reactant A in units of
kmol/m'-s is given by (-r,)= kC,where CA is the concentration of the reactant
in appropriate units. The densities of all thestreams are independent of the
composition, and the concentration of the reactant in the inlet stream is given by
CA0.
