Model Argumentative Essay

Topic: Emotional intelligence is more important than academic skills at university. Do you
agree or disagree?
The pressure and complexity of university life is perhaps greater than ever before. To be
successful, it is clearly important for university students to have a range of academic skills.
Therefore, this essay argues that having high EQ is more important than having good
academic skills for positive results at university because it is linked to motivation, social
engagement and self-awareness.

To begin with, students who have high emotional intelligence are self-motivated. They have
a strong sense of purpose, and this makes what they are doing feel meaningful. Study at
university can be intense, and is not always interesting, but highly motivated students
generally approach difficult tasks with more enthusiasm. Motivated students also tend to
set long-term goals, which may make them more persistent when faced with problems.

Another feature of emotional intelligence which is beneficial for study success is the ability
to build strong relationships. Universities can be big and lonely places, but students with
high emotional intelligence are good at making and maintaining friendships. Friends not
only support each other, but also provide a sense of belonging. In addition, good
relationship building enables students to connect with others. For example, students with
good social skills may form study groups, or be willing to ask for help when needed.

Furthermore, emotionally intelligent individuals are aware of their strengths and

weaknesses, which enables them to make better decisions about their study. For instance,
students may choose classes in the morning because this is when they concentrate best.
Students with high EQ also reflect on their feelings, and do not allow disappointments to
upset them for long. If they are feeling anxious, they take action to keep themselves
healthy.

In conclusion, a high EQ gives students the ability to work towards their goals, build social
networks and understand their emotions. This makes EQ more important than students’
other academic skills because it increases their self-motivation, it helps them to build strong
relationships and overall, it leads to more successful study outcomes. The good news is that
it is possible for everyone to raise their emotional intelligence with conscious awareness
and effort.
