Electrical Questions

A transformer is an equipment that transfers power between circuits by changing the voltage without altering the frequency. It is used to increase or decrease voltage levels as needed for transmission or use. Without transformers, power could not be transmitted over long distances or supplied at the appropriate voltages for end users. Distribution line carrier (DLC) signals face challenges propagating through distribution networks that branch and mesh in complex ways with varying loads, unlike transmission level power line carrier (PLC) systems.

Explain the advantage of DLC over PLC?
Answer Powerline carrier systems (PLC) can be
# 1 divided into two
segments, a powerline transmission segment
and a downstream
powerline distribution network segment.

PLC systems applied to distribution

networks have a group of
special technical obstacles that are not
experienced in
transmission level PLC. Distribution line
carrier (DLC)
signals must propagate through networks
that are extremely
hard to model as the networks branch and
mesh with each
other while experiencing highly variable
levels of loading.
DLC signals must traverse a network that
was designed to
carry power signals at 50/60 Hz and are
optimized for this
task. Power transformers at PLC
frequencies are modelled
primarily, at PLC frequencies, by their
leakage reactance
and tend to block DLC signals. Capacitor
banks used for
power factor correction present a low-
impedance path to
ground and sink DLC signals unless they
are trapped out with
reactors.

# 1 its frequency.it
is also used to increase or decrease the
voltage by using
diffeent types of transformers like step-up
and step down
transformers.if we transfer the power with
out transformer
the voltage rating will come down as the
distance of
transmission is increasing.

Answ A transformer is used to increase or 0 Krishna

transformer
ratings in kva

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer Both the losses of 2 R. Anand
the transformer is
#2
independent of the
power factor (cos
phi), which means
a transformer
would not
make any change in
the power factor,
since both the
losses
viz copper
loss(depends on
current) and iron
loss(depends
on voltage) are
independent of
power factor, that
is why a
Transformers
rating is not on
kW, but on KVA

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer transformer has 2 Senthil Kumar.a
two major losses
#4
one is copper loss
it
depends upon the
current , the
current unit is
Amps ans the
core loss depends
upon the voltage
it unit is
Voltage, so
VA the k mantion
for the capacity
why transformer
capacity not say
in KW?
becaz watts is
unit of power
already we know
the formula of
power, it is
current x voltage
x cos phi. but the
two
losses not depends
upon the power
factor, incase we
r say
in KW it makes a
error in
calculation.
because the KW
include the power
factor. I hope
that it is correct
upto my
knowledge only

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer kVA is the unit 5 Chiya
for apparent
#5 power. Apparent
power consists
of active and
reactive power.
Active power is
the share of
the apparent power
which transmits
energy from the
source
(generator) to the
user. Reactive
power is the share
of the
apparent power
which represents a
useless
oscillation of
energy from the
source to the user
and back again. It
occurs when on
account of some
»inertia« in the
system
there is a phase
shift between
voltage and
current. This
means that the
current does not
change polarity
synchronous
with the voltage.
But the heat
generated in a
winding as
well as the eddy
current losses
generated in a
transformer
core depend on the
current only,
regardless of
whether it
aligns with the
voltage or not.
Therefore the heat
is
always
proportional to
the square of the
current amplitude,
irrespective of
the phase angle
(the shift between
voltage
and current). So a
transformer has to
be rated (and
selected) by
apparent power.

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer the losses in the 0 Saravanan
transformer is
#6 dependent upon the
voltage
and current i.e cu
and iron loss

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer The difference is 0 Gk
that, even though
#7
both are
electrical
equipments,
transformer is
considered as a
power source
while the
Induction motor is
considered as a
load.

In the case of a
power source, you
cannot predict the
type
of load
(resistive,
Capacitive or
Inductive) that
will be
connected to it.
Hence the actual
usable capacity
rating
depends on the
power factor of
the load.

Power = Voltage x
Current x Power
Factor

If the load is
resistive, PF is 1
(unity) and if the
load
is inductive, it
will be less than
unity.

In the second case

(Load), the motor
manufacturer gives
the
rated voltage and
full load current
taking into
account the
power factor.

Thumb Rule - all

AC power sources -
Generators,
Transformers, UPS
etc. are rated in
KVA and all loads
are
rated in Watt or
Kilowatt.

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer At the designing 0 Ankaraju.k

#8
can not predict
which

i.e; the power

thhe transformer
losses is

losses in

which it is
operating load

Re: why transformer ratings in kva?
Answer Because 0 Tarun
Transformer does
# 11 not depend on PF
it depends on
the max. current.
but motor depends

thats why it

# 15
there is no any

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer earth is more important to protect you, so 2 A.senthil Kumar
we should be
#1
provide the low resistance path for that.

already we very well known that the area is

inversly
proportional to the reistance (R=p*l/a here
p=specific
resistance(row), l= length, a = area)

from above
if area increased the resistance is
decreased. it cause
the earth is bigger than other.

if area of earth pin small it offerd high

resistance path
for earth. it cause we r not get earth
easily

r u got it?

i think that it is correct answer for ur

question up to my
knowldge

#2

can u explain this in another way which can

be under

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer earthing is provided for protection, ie if 0 Ashli
the body of an
#3 equipment is in contact with current
carrying conductor,
the current has to be bypassed to earth so
as to avoid
human from getting electric shock. this is
done by earthing
the body of the equipment. by earthing we
are providing a
low resistance path.ie any how we need to
reduce path
resistance. resistance is inversily
proportional to area of
cross section of path. thtz y earth hole
size is made
bigger. hope u got the point

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer earthing is used for human & equipment 0 Ritesh Gupta
protection purpose.
#4 resistance of big cross sectional area
conductor is less so
current will be flow in low resistance path.

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer earthing is also use to divert the short- 0 Shailesh Nimkar
circuit current to
#5 the earth as we knw short circuit current
has high value
which is approximately 6 times the rated
value so that is
normat rating conductor we use the it get
burn or break and
protection could not achive
that is the original reason for it

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer hi 0 Priyadharsini
#6
the property of the current is that it takes
low resistance
path.
if two resistance is conected in IIel, the
current flow
will be more in low resistance.

and Resistance is inversly proportional to

area.
when area is more the reistance is low.
if any shock occurs current will flow thro
the low
resistance instead of the human(human
reistance is more
than earth resistance) that is the concept
of having lare
earth pin.

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer earth hole size is biggest in plug point 4 Mahendra
because, when we
#7
took out the plug from socket the phase &
neutral terminals
of socket comes first then the earth
contact. Due to safty
purpose Earth contact should be disconnect
at the last
moment this prevent any damage to human
being and equipment
as well for any abnormal conditions. Another
reason for
that is to keeping large contact area for
earth because in
fault like earth & short circuit a large
current
approximately 6 times flows through circuit.

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer as the resistance is inversaly proportional 0 Nilesh Shinde
to the area of
#8
cross section of the conductor. Due to
increase in this
cross section the resistance of that path
decreases and
leakage current of the equipment in case of
fault can be
passed to earth safely.

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer usually all the metal body equipments have
the earth for
#9 example washing machine,
refrigerator ,oven.we cannot see
the earth pin in the t.v,this is for the
protection that is
the metals are good conduactors and when
human intend to
touch then it causes shock,if there is any
leakage in the
circuit.so to prevent this we are using the
earth.

Re: why earth hole size is biggest in plug point?
Answer 1) See, this is to
have a least
#3
resistance path to
the flow
of earth fault
current. As earth
point have larger
area, it
is having low
resistance.(
R=6l/a ).

2)To have very firm

Re: What is the Difference Between MCCB & ACB & VCB
Answer MCCB,ACB,VCB all the
# 4 three are protective
devices only.
They are used to isolate
the system which is
connected
below them at fault
conditions. Eg, Overload,
Short
circuit,Earth fault.

Depending upon the

operating voltages and
level of
protection(Fault Level)
needed for the
system ,these three
protection device are
selected.

For Eg: If the operating

voltage are below 1100V,
depend
upon the fault level we
can use MCCB or ACB.

Simillarly if operating
voltage are more than
1100V,VCB are
used.

Re: how to connect from a line-to-line connection to a line-to- neutral

Answer If it is 3ph and star
# 2 connected, then connect the
star point
to neutral. If it is any
resistive circuit having
connected
to 2phases, then the mid point
of the circuit is connected
to neutral and the other two

One more option is that, the
line to neutral voltage is
made

connect load as such draining
full load current or half
load, even noload,but voltage
remain moreover same.So it
willl rated in terms of product
of V*I, secondly it gives a

Answer The capacitor bank on HT side
# 1 will anyhow correct the PF,
the line losses will not be
reduced. hence by putting the
capacitors on LT side, that too
nearer to the load, the
losses and PF can be much better
improved. The capacitors on
HT side is just to minimize the
line losses, even though it
improves PF putting capacitors
on LT side is always
recommended that too nearer to
load, so as to get efficient
usage of electricity.
Please not that this answer is
only for inductive load
consideration as linelosses and
transformers and most of the
loads conneted to the line is
inductive.

Re: What is the difference between phase current & line current, how
both can be measured in star and delta system
Answer Star or Delta are types of winding
# 1 connections for 3 phase
systems. The line current is the
current passing thru
conductor to these windings. The
ammeter is generally used
to measure current thru those
conductors & not winding.
This current is known as line
current. While the current
passing thru each phase of winding
is known as phase
current.
In Star winding entire line
current passes thru
individual phase i.e. I(ph)=I(L)
In Delta winding however line
current gets divided in two
windings. Here I(ph)=I(L)/1.732.
Here 1.732 is square root
of 3.

Re: New istallation how many eathing have one transformer? Names
of earthing connect places?
Answer Any transformer should have atleat four 0 Makpsingh
# 1 earthings. [CEA]
2 connections for its neutral earthing
and
2 connections for its body earhtings
All the connections should be with
dedicated earth pits
which may be interconnected for
relaiblity and to have
lower earth reistance value.
These earth pits should be duly marked
and to be tested on
a dry day once in year of earth
reisistance and earth
continuity. Earth Resistance value should
be less than 5
ohms and if it is greater then these
earth pits should be
treated to bring dowun the value.

Re: what is the use of choke on tube light fitting
Answer The function of choke is 0 Manish Tailor
to provide high voltage
# 1 enough for
ionization to take place
in a tube light and
after
establishment and
substenance of
ionization, limit the
voltage across the tube.
That is the reason why a

fuses when the choke is
shorted.

Re: what is the use of choke on tube light fitting
Answer The choke acts a 0 Ramesh
# 2 regulator and controls
the current flow
thro' the flourescent
tube.

Re: what is the use of choke on tube light fitting
Answer At the time of starting 3 Dileep
#3 a tube choke gives rise
to high
voltage by di/dt nearly
1000 volts by starter
ON-OFF
function rate of change
of voltage becomes high
due to
inductance of choke.
This high voltage starts
ionization of
gas in the tube. Once
gas gets ionised and
starts
conducting then starter
gets out of circuit and
circuit is
completed only through
choke which now share
voltage(limit
voltage) for tube

now
to maintain it only
nearly half of the

# 1 ratio,k=Ns/Np=1.

  Re: what is isolation Transformer?
Answer An isolation transformer is a
# 2 transformer, often with
symmetrical windings, which is
used to decouple two
circuits. An isolation
transformer allows an AC signal
or
power to be taken from one
device and fed into another
without electrically connecting
the two circuits. Isolation
transformers block transmission
of DC signals from one
circuit to the other, but allow
AC signals to pass. They
also block interference caused
by ground loops. Isolation
transformers with electrostatic
shields are used for power
supplies for sensitive
equipment such as computers or
laboratory instruments.

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer actually rating of the machine 0 Manoj Kumar
# 1 (kva or kw) depends upon the
power factor since the load power
factor to which
transformer is supplying power is
not known , it may be
capacitive ,inductive , or
resistive that is why its rating
is in kva and not in kw

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer The unit of voltage in Volts 0 Naresh
# 2 The unit of current in Amperes
When the energy transfer from
primary ciruit to secondary
circuit power is constant. there
is no involvement of power
factor. Due to this transformer
rating in KVA not in KW

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer As we know Cu loss depends on 2 Nikunj
# 3 current & iron loss depends
on voltage and not affected by
power fector hence always
transformer ratting defined in
KVA not in Kw.

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer Since Transformer is a Static 3 Padmanaban
# 4 device and it is having two
losses namely core loss and Cu
loss. The core loss depends
on the Voltage (V) only, where Cu
loss depends on Current
(I) only.So for this purpose the
transformer always called
its rating in apparent power
only(VA).

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer Because transformenr is used for 0 Dileep
# 5 converting voltage level
only and nothing therefore its
rating is in KVA i.e. KV x
Amp It gives us rating/capacity
of transformer how power it
can handle.
The equipments not meant for
consuming power are rated in
KVA units & those consuming power
are rated in KW.

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer The instruments which converts 0 Amol
# 6 energy from one form to
another, rated in KW like motor
etc which keeps same form
of energy will be rated in KVA
like Transformer,stabilizer
etc

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer While designing the transformer 0 Sachin
# 7 manufacturer dosenot know
the load power factor.

  Re: Why Transformer in KVA?
Answer The leading/lagging power factor
# 8 has
magnetizing/demagnetizing effect
on armature reaction in a
rotating electrical machine.
Hence the losses depends on
the load power factor. Unity PF
has neither magnetizing nor
de-magnetizing effect.

Whereas in a transformer, the

power factor doesn't play any
role in machine losses i.e. Cu &
core losses are
independent of power factor.

Hence the rating of transformer

is always given in KVA and
the rating of generators is given
in kW at certain pf i.e.
usually at 0.8 lag.

Re: how to select a circuit breaker?
Answer this depends on the application type 0 Kapil
# 1 where you are using
this circuit breaker. actually we will
have to know whether
we require some delay in tripping
after the overcurrent or a
frequent operation is needed. if a
delay is needed and we
will have to bear some over
temperature conditions then we
use thermal relay which has some delay
and low trip current
at high temp. when we require the
frequent operation then we
use magnetic type relay. also we will
have to mind the
operating environment, nominal current
rating and max peak
current bearing capacity and delay
time of the circuit breaker.

Answer I would like to answer by way of an
# 3 example:
Generator capacity = 12MVA
Generator sub-transient impedance =
12%

With above two data,

the generator fault level can be
calculated as folows:
Generator fault level = Generator
capacity / generator sub-
transient impedance

Generator fault level = 12 MVA / 12% =

12MVA/.12 = 100MVA

To get fault current = Generator fault

MVA / (1.732 *
generator rated voltage)

In case of single phase generator

1.732 to be ignored.
