EELE344 Spring 2022 2023 Course Project

The document outlines a power electronics course project involving the design and simulation of a square-wave inverter. It describes the theoretical and simulation parts of the project. For the theoretical part, students are assigned to one of 12 groups, each with different circuit parameters. They must design the inverter, calculate expressions for load current and power, as well as DC source current and THD. For the simulation part, students use PSpice to simulate the designed inverter and plot voltages, currents, and compare theoretical to simulation results. Formal project reports are due by June 8th and should include the outlined sections and submission of reports and simulation files.

“EELE344 – POWER ELECTRONICS COURSE PROJECT”

“Spring 2022 – 2023”

The project descriptions are provided as follows. Each group should separately work on the project assigned to the
group. Project reports together with the project simulation file(s) should be submitted as stated in the “Project Report
Instruction Sheet”. Each student in a group should individually submit a copy of the project report and the related
simulation file(s). The project includes a theoretical part and a simulation part as follows;

1) Theoretical Part
A square-wave inverter is to be designed to transfer power from an DC source to an AC load including a
resistor and an inductor. The design parameters to be used by each group are provided in Table 1. Design
the inverter circuit according to the provided information for each group in Table 1 and determine;
a) The DC source voltage such that the load current provided in Table 1 is achieved at the fundamental
frequency
b) Write and expression for the load current
c) The power absorbed by the load
d) The average current in the DC source
e) Calculate the THD

2) Simulation Part

i. Simulate the inverter circuit designed in “Part 1” using PSpice software.

ii. Plot the load voltage and current waveforms
iii. Plot the supply voltage and current waveforms
iv. Compare and verify the results obtained in “Part 1” with the simulation results obtained from
PSpice simulation.

Report Instruction Sheet
Prepare a formal, final report for the project. The report should incorporate all the work done by
the students. All figures should have figure numbers and captions. The report should be organized
as follows:

1. Introduction:

Describe the designed inverter type, the theoretical calculations and the work to be conducted in
PSpice.

2. Procedures:

Describe what you did for design and simulation of the project, both for the theoretical part and
the PSpice simulation.

3. Results:

Provide both the theoretical calculations and the simulation results from the PSpice program.

4. Calculations and Verification:

Show the comparison of your manually-calculated theoretical results and the simulation results
obtained from PSpice.

5. Conclusions

Include the conclusion of your project and describe your confidence in your simulation of the
rectifier circuits.

PROJECT SUBMISSION
The deadline for projects submission is Thursday 08.06.2023. Each group should submit a hard copy of
the project report and each student should submit a soft copy of the project report together with the PSpice
simulation file in the related filed on Moodle. The project reports should have a cover page including the
course name, student(s) name, surname and student number.
