Unit 8 - Mini Test

The document is a reading comprehension exercise about Svalbard, Norway. Svalbard is a group of Norwegian islands located above the Arctic Circle. For over 100 days each winter there is no sunlight, only endless night. However, the long nights are quite beautiful. Some things travelers can do in Svalbard during the winter include dogsledding under the light of the full moon and learning about Svalbard's history by visiting an old mining camp. In the past Svalbard was a mining town that dug for coal, but it no longer mines coal and now relies on tourism, research, and education.

UNIT 8: HAVE YOU EVER TRIED GO-KARTING?

MINI TEST

Exercise 1:

A. Read the article. Choose the correct answers.

A Hundred Days of Night

Somewhere above the Arctic circle, there’s a group of Norwegian islands that I have always
wanted to visit. Svalbard is a place where the winters are special. For more than 100 days, there
is no sun—only endless night. This may sound awful to some, but the long nights are actually
quite beautiful. Many travelers visit Svalbard, and if you’d like to experience its dark and
beautiful winter for yourself, here are some things you can do while you’re there.

Dogsled by moonlight

Explore Svalbard by dogsled under the light of the full moon. Svalbard’s beautiful snow-covered
scenery becomes even more magical when the moon is at its brightest. And there’s no better way
to enjoy that scenery than while riding a sled pulled by a team of energetic dogs. Prepare for
your adventure by first getting to know the dogs. And once you’re ready, set off into the
wilderness and enjoy some of the best nature you’ll ever see!

Learn about Svalbard’s history

Svalbard was once a mining town—workers used to dig underground to look for buried coal to
sell as fuel. That all stopped many years ago, when coal became less popular. Today, Svalbard
makes most of its money through tourism, research, and education. But you can still see how
things once were by visiting Gruve 3—a mining camp that closed in 1996, but that looks like it
closed yesterday! It’s a great way to learn how the people of Svalbard lived and worked in the
past.

of Technology the most. It is definitely my favorite. In fact, I went there last month. They had
an exhibit on communications technology through the years. The exhibit was really popular, and
they have extended it for another month. The Art Museum is also excellent. I’ve gone there only
once, but I really enjoyed it. The Natural History Museum is famous for its dinosaurs. I went
there a couple years ago on a school trip, but I haven’t been there since. My cousins tell me that
the museum has gotten a lot better recently. They visited two months ago, and they told me the
exhibits were great. Maybe I'll go next weekend!
