INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

This paper contains 4 questions in 6 pages

Answer all the questions.

This is an open book examination.

The examination accounts for 70% of the module assessment. The marks assigned for
each question and sections thereof are indicated in square brackets.

Assume reasonable values for any essential data not given in or with the examination
paper. Clearly state such assumptions made on the scripts.

If you have any doubt to the interpretation of the wording of a question, make your own
decision, but clearly state it on the script.

Question 1

The UoM 11/ 0.4 kV distribution substation of the LECO supplying University of
Moratuwa experiences an annual peak load of 350 kW. The total annual energy
supplied to the primary feeder circuits is 106 kWh. Fig. Q1 illustrates the
corresponding annual load curve.

Fig. Q1

(i) Find the annual average power demand. [5 marks]

(ii) Find the annual load factor. [5 marks]
(iii) Draw the annual load duration curve. [5 marks]
(iv) Suppose that the feeder is 1 km long and has an impedance of
(0.08+ j0.04) Ω/km. Assume that the load is uniformly distributed and has a
power factor of 0.8. If the Empirical Formula for Loss Factor, LsF is
LsF  0.15LF  0.85LF 2 , where LF is the load factor.
i. Calculate the total voltage drop at peak load (in August) using the
approximate method. [5 marks]
ii. Calculate the three phase annual average loss using the approximate
method. [5 marks]

Question 2

(a) Use time-current characteristic curves to illustrate how feeder selective relaying is
provided in the small distribution system shown in Fig. Q2. Mark important current
and time limits in your illustration. Consider the following facts:
 In Fig. 2, R is an auto-recloser having one instantaneous and one time delayed
operation. There’s Zero operating time for auto-recloser breaker operation.
 In Fig. 2, C is 50T expulsion fuse having a speed ratio of 10. It has a melting
current of 1500 A at 0.1 s.
 Feeder selective relay coordination is satisfied only in the 300 A to 1000 A
range. [15 marks]

Fig. Q2

(b) Write short notes on the following:

(i) Auto-recloser vs Sectionalizer [5 marks]
(ii) Load Break Switch vs Breaker [5 marks]

Question 3

Consider the network given in Fig. Q3.

Fig. Q3

The line-to-line source voltage at Node 1 is 12.47 kV and the distribution line impedance is
(0.1 + j0.5) Ω/km. All loads are star connected and balanced. Using the forward-backward sweep
method, compute the node voltages after 2 iterations. [25 marks]

Question 4

Table Q 4.1 shows the reliability parameters of the feeder sections and the distributors in the
simple radial distribution system shown in Fig. Q4. Load point details of the same
distribution system are shown in Table Q 4.2. There are isolators installed at points t and u
and fuses are installed at points v, w and x.

Fig. Q4

Table Q 4.1
Component λ (failures/year) r (hours)
Feeder section 1 0.2 3.5
Feeder section 2 0.3 3.5
Feeder section 3 0.1 3.5
Distributor a 0.6 2.5
Distributor b 0.5 2.5
Distributor c 0.4 2.5

Table Q 4.2
Load point Number of customers Average load connected (kW)
A 500 3000
B 800 4500
C 1000 5000

Assume that all failures in feeder sections and distributors are short circuits and there are
no failures in fuses. The isolation and switching time is 0.5 hours.

a) Evaluate the following reliability parameters of load points A, B and C.

(i) Failure rate [5 marks]

(ii) Outage time [6 marks]
(iii) Unavailability [6 marks]

b) Evaluate the following customer and load oriented reliability indices.

(i) System average interruption frequency index [2 marks]

(ii) System average interruption duration index [2 marks]
(iii)Customer average interruption duration index [2 marks]
(iv) Average energy not supplied [2 marks]
