Velocity and Acceleration in Mechanisms
11- The kinematic diagram of one of the cylinders of a rotary engine is shown in Fig. 11. The crank OA
which is vertical and fixed, is 50 mm long. The length of the connecting rod AB is 125 mm. The line
of the stroke OB is inclined at 50° to the vertical. The cylinders are rotating at a uniform speed of
300 rpm., in a clockwise direction, about the fixed center O.
Determine:
i. acceleration of the piston inside the cylinder, and
ii. angular acceleration of the connecting rod.
12- In The driving crank AB of the quick-return mechanism, as shown in Fig. 12, revolves at a uniform
speed of 200 rpm. Find the velocity and acceleration of the tool-box R, in the position shown, when
the crank makes an angle of 60° with the vertical line of centers PA. What is the acceleration of
sliding of the block at B along the slotted lever PQ?
13- Figure 2 In a Whitworth quick return motion, as shown in Fig. 13. OA is a crank rotating at 30 rpm
in a clockwise direction. The dimensions of various links are: OA = 150 mm; OC = 100 mm; CD =
125 mm; and DR = 500 mm. Determine the acceleration of the sliding block R and the angular
acceleration of the slotted lever CA.

14- In the swiveling-joint mechanism shown in Fig. 14, AB is the driving crank rotating at 300 rpm
clockwise. The lengths of various links are as follows:
AD = 650 mm, AB = 100 mm, BC = 800 mm, DC = 250 mm, BE = CE, EF = 400 mm, OF = 240
mm, FS = 400 mm. Determine the acceleration of sliding of the link EF in the trunnion.

15- Figure 15 shows a Scotch yoke mechanism. At the instant shown, the crank OP has an angular
velocity of 10 rad/s and an angular acceleration of 30 rad/s2. Determine the acceleration of the slider
P in the guide and the horizontal acceleration of the guide.

16- A Whitworth quick-return mechanism is shown in Fig. 16. The dimensions of the links are OP
(crank) = 240 mm, OA = 150 mm, AR = 165 mm and RS = 430 mm. The crank OP has an angular
velocity of 2.5 rad/s and an angular deceleration of 20 rad/s2 at the instant. Determine the
i. Acceleration of the slider S
ii. Angular acceleration of links AR and RS.
17- In the mechanism shown in Fig. 17, The slider is pinned to the ground at point C. link OA is rotating
CW at constant input speed of 18 rad/s. Knowing that, AO = 20 cm, OC = 25 cm find the angular
acceleration of link AB.
