BW - M5 - Procedure - How To Do Factory Mode - Tech Mode - User Options 2

The document provides instructions for entering factory mode on a GasAlertMicro5 instrument to manually change factory settings. Factory mode allows changes to root operations and settings that should only be done by a trained service center. To enter factory mode requires simultaneously pressing three buttons during startup, followed by pressing 10 keys in a specific sequence. Factory mode options include settings for serial number, datalogger, sensors, and more that require care or should not be changed. User mode and technician mode options are also described.

Factory Mode with the GasAlertMicro5

Factory mode allows manual changes to factory options. These settings changes root operations of the M5 instruments
and should therefore only be operated by level 2 trained distributor service centers after contacting BW service centers.

To enter factory mode, do the following:

1. Turn on the detector.

2. During the first screen where the firmware version and serial number are shown,
simultaneously press and hold the following 3 buttons:

ON, UP, DOWN

3. When correctly held for a few seconds, the Micro5 will beep and the key icon will light up beside the battery icon on
the bottom of the LCD. If the key does not appear and the unit startup sequence continues, you have not pressed the
buttons correctly. (Switch instrument off and start over again)

4. Press the following 10 keys in this sequence:

UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, ON, UP, ON, UP, OK, OK

Use steady and deliberate action for each button press and allow about half a second between
each button press.

5. If successful, the detector will beep twice and will display the factory options screen.

If the screen does not appear and the Micro5 continues its startup sequence, turn off the unit
and restart from step 1.
Factory Mode Options
Green – These options can be changed by service center
Red – Be carefull, only as last option after consulting BW service
Black – Do not change these, they can change instrument operation dramatically

The following sections describe all the options that the Micro5 has.
1. Exit: Close factory mode and restart unit.

2. Initialize: restore ALL the IR loaded values (only works if the device was originally IR loaded at the factory).
Basically a hard reset, you need to set ser-num, datalogger, microdock options again.

3. X-Sense: Adjust the CO cross-sensitivity in the COSH sensor (do not change this setting).
4. Re-Birth: Make the unit allow IR loading again (do not change this setting)
5. IR Stlth: Enable IR stealth mode (requires IR Stealth hardware build). This does not actually turn IR Stealth
mode on, but allows the user option to appear in Tech mode (do not change this setting)

6. Ser-Num: Modify the unit's serial number. If this option is used, it will clear the IR Upload screen even if the unit
has not been IR uploaded.

7. Datalogger: Enable the datalogger (this is a cost to the customer)

8. Battery: Set the low battery cutoff level (i.e. when unit shuts down automatically). This should NEVER be
adjusted unless instructed to in writing by R & D. (do not change this setting)
9. Rounding: Enable / disable the sensor "deadzone" -- when the sensors show 0 despite small readings. (do not
change this setting)

10. Microdock: Allow the unit to talk to MicroDock (a saleable feature)

11. Ega: Enables the optional, loadable 6th language. It is assumed a special LCD EEPROM will be used with
this option. (do not change this setting)

12. Pump: Adjust the nominal pump speed to set the flow rate. This is the same as the tech mode option.

13. Bump w/#: If enabled, shows bump reading on display during bump test. Otherwise display shows “Microdock
Bump” – no numbers. (do not change this setting)
14. CO/PID Blank: Set the level where zero blanking takes place. Anything below the preset level will be displayed as
0ppm. (do not change this setting)
15. CO2 Data: Get M5 to upload CO2 zero data to printer via HP protocol. (do not change this setting)
User Mode Options
Press and hold up & down arrow at the same time.
If password is requested, use up to create 1007.

1. Exit Exits the user options menu.

2. Options: • Backlght: Enables the automatic backlight in low-light conditions; if unchecked, the unit will only
turn on the backlight in alarm. To entirely disable the backlight, the unit must be in Stealth mode.
• Confibeep: Enables/disables the confidence beep.
• Due-lock: Upon startup, it prevents the user from operating a detector that is overdue for calibration
by requesting a passcode
• Latch: Gas alarms will remain active and show their peak value on the LCD until the user
acknowledges the alarm.
• Passcode: Prevents unauthorized personnel from having access to the user options menu and
calibration functions.
• Safe: Causes the display to read Safe as long as the detector is not in alarm. If a gas reaches an
alarm level of concentration, the display switches to show the gas readings
• Fast pump: Provides full power to the sampling pump.

3. Sensors: • Sens on: Enables/disables the sensor (the detector still operates if a sensor is disabled)
• Span gas: Changes the span gas concentration for each sensor.
• STEL period: Changes the short-term exposure limit time period (only applicable to toxic sensors).
• TWA method: Choose either the OSHA or ACGIH standard of calculating the timeweighted
average.
• Resolution: Sets the resolution with which the gas measurement is displayed (if applicable)
•% vol CH4: Shows the LEL reading in % vol. assuming a methane environment.
• % vol CO2: Shows the CO2 reading in % volume.• Correction: Allows the user to adjust the
instrument reading for a specific gas using a correction factor (only applicable to LEL and PID
sensors). There is a library of predefined correction factors and an option to set a custom correction
factor.
• Autocal: Automatic oxygen calibration upon startup.

4. Logger: Allows the user to change the datalogging interval (between 1-127 seconds).

5. Clock: Allows the user to set the date and time for the detector.

6. Language: Enables the display’s language in the user’s choice of

English, French, Spanish, German, or Portuguese.
Tech Mode Options

Technician mode is a hidden user option. To enter Technician mode, scroll to the Language option in
the user option menu. Then press and hold DOWN, UP, OK in that order. The unit will beep and
Tech Mode will appear as a new selectable option. Choose Tech mode to launch the new menu.

1. Sensors: Allows the user to change their toxic sensor to monitor a different gas.
Note: Changing sensor types will destroy all calibration data for that sensor location and the
sensor will have to be re-calibrated.

2. Pump: Allows user to set the nominal pump speed for the desired flow. This is the same as the factory mode
option.

3. Initialize: Set the detector back to its default factory settings (unit must have been IR Loaded for this to be
allowed).

4. Force cal: Forces the detector into mandatory calibration if a sensor is overdue for calibration upon startup.

5. Bmp daily: mandatory daily bump tests of LEL and O2 sensors.

6. Stealth: Disables the beepers, backlight (even if the option is enabled), and alarm LEDs. Only the vibrator
provides feedback to the user.

7. IR Stlth: This option appears ONLY if IR Stealth mode is enabled in factory mode. Checking the box disables
the beepers, backlight (even if the option is enabled), and the left side alarm LEDs. It is assumed that
the right side LEDs are infrared and they will continue to operate along with the vibrator to provide
alarm feedback to the user.
