Tap Changing Transformer Experiment

This document provides instructions for simulating a tap changing transformer in PowerWorld Simulator to record the load bus voltage as the off nominal tap ratio is changed in discrete steps. It instructs the user to set the transformer as an off-nominal transformer, change the taps to vary the ratio by 0.625% and record the resulting load bus voltages in a table. It also has the user explain how the load bus voltage changes with different tap ratios and observe how the automatic tap control mode responds with varying reactive power loads.

transformer
Parameters of transformer
• 1. Build the power system shown in figure 1 using PowerWorld Simulator.
• 2. Set the transformer as an off-nominal transformer ratio.
• 3. Change the transformer’s taps in discrete steps, with each step changing the tap ratio by
• 0.625%.
• 4. Record the Load bus voltage as the off nominal tap ratio changes.
• 5. Tabulate your results in the following table.
• 6. Explain the changes happen on the voltage of the load bus with changing the tap ratio.
Off nominal tap ratio Load Bus voltage
0.98750
0.99375
1.0000
1.00625
1.01250
1.01875
1.02500
Automatic Mode

• 1. Set the transformer control mode to automatic.

• 2. What value of Tap Ratio that makes the bus voltage equal to nominal value.
• 3. Vary the Mvar load, Observe the changes happen, Discuss?
