Chapter - Time and Motion

This document discusses concepts related to time and motion, including speed, distance, and time. It provides examples of calculating speed, distance, and time using the equations: [1] Speed = Distance / Time, [2] Distance = Speed x Time, and [3] Time = Distance / Speed. It also discusses uniform and non-uniform motion, and explores these concepts through examples with graphs. The document concludes with practice questions about time measurement devices and examples involving calculations of time, distance, and speed.

CHAPTER- TIME AND MOTION

CHAPTER AT A GLANCE

CONCEPT – SPEED ( HOW FAST?)

Speed is the quantity that tells us how fast something is moving.
For example- we might say: The car’s speed was 50 kilometres per hour when it hit the wall.
Remember that, when we give a measurement, we give its value including the unit. In this example, the unit is
kilometres per hour, usually written as km/hr.
A speed of 50km/hr means that a car would travel 50 km in one hour if it is kept moving at that speed.
The standard international unit(S.I Unit) to measure speed is m/s.
Let us find the relationship between m/s and km/hr
1 km/hr= 1 kilometre/1 hour
1 km/hr= 1000m/3600s
1 km/hr= 5/18m/s

CALCULATING SPEED
Here is an example- A runner completes a 200 m race in 25s. What is her speed?
The distance travelled is 200m and the time taken is 25s. So:

= 200m/ 25s = 8m/s

Practice questions: (To be done in the notebook)

1. Roma walked a distance of 270 metres from her home to a park in 3 minutes. What was her speed during this
walk?
2. A cockroach covers a distance of 30m in 1.5 minutes. What is the speed of cockroach?

3. The distance between Delhi and Lucknow is 490 km. A train takes 7 hours to cover this distance.
Calculate the speed of the train.
4. The speed of fastest running animal cheetah is 112km/hr. Express the speed in m/s.

Practice questions: (To be done in the notebook)

1. A truck moves with a speed of 90 km/hr for 20 minutes and at 60 km/hr for the next 20 minutes. Find the
average speed of the truck.
2. A bus travelled the first 40 km of a journey in one hour and the next 60 kilometres in the next one hour.
Calculate the average speed of the bus.
CONCEPT – DISTANCE (HOW FAR?)
The faster you run and the longer you run for, the farther you will get.

Calculating distance- Here’s an example

The bus is travelling along a road. It’s speed is 25m/s. How gar it will go in 60 seconds?
Distance travelled = speed X time taken
= 25m/s X 60 s
= 1500 m
Practice questions( To be done in the notebook)
1. A migrating bird can travel at a speed of 30m/s. How far it will travel in 25 minutes at this speed? Give your
answer in metres and kilometres.
2. A car travels 30 minutes at a speed of 120km/hr and 45 minutes at a speed of 150 km/hr. what is the total
distance covered?
3. A man is driving his car at a speed of 50 km/hr. How far will he be travelling in 5 hours?
CONCEPT- TIME( HOW LONG?)

The above formula is obtained by rearranging the speed formula:

Practice questions: (To be done in the notebook)
1. A cargo ship travels at an average speed of 12m/s. How long will it take to travel between 2 ports which are
600 km apart?
2. A biker drives at a speed of 40 km/hr and covers a distance of 30 km. What is the duration of the drive?
3. A train is travelling at a speed of 110km/hr. How long will it take to complete a journey of 605km, without
any stoppage in between?
