1b.activity - What Is The Best Solution To Deforestation

The local government is facing the issue of deforestation near a growing settlement. Several groups rely on the forest for different purposes. Potential solutions include sustainable practices, targeting illegal logging, reforestation, greening urban areas, and splitting the forest in half between development and conservation. Each group would view the solutions differently based on how it impacts their interests. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each solution, the local government must decide on the best option to balance the forest's protection with the community's needs.

1 What does it mean to be a global

citizen?
Activity: What is the best solution to deforestation?
You are a leader of a local government that wants to find a sustainable solution to the deforestation of
the nearby forest, which is next to a large settlement. Most people there rely on the forest for their
livelihoods or use it as a tourist area. Another issue for you is that the settlement is getting bigger so
new housing and schools need to be built and the forest is a great place for this.

Examples of the groups (sometimes known as stakeholders) are:

Timber workers: These workers chop down trees for the local businesses, such as the paper mill and
furniture workers. They are unhappy that illegal loggers are chopping down too many trees and giving
them a bad reputation.

Paper mill workers: These workers rely on the timber from the forest to provide the raw material for
the paper that they sell all over the country. The paper mill is a major employer of people in the
settlement.

Environmentalists: They are very worried that the forest is being cut down at an alarming rate. Plants
and animal species have been lost.

Forestry Commission: This government group wants to protect the forest, but at the same time make
sure that the forest is used commercially as well. It manages the forest for tourists and for businesses.

Tourist board: It promotes tourism in the area. One of the main attractions is the forest.

Building company: The company wants to build more houses in the area and use the timber as a raw
material.

Schools: They use the forest for outdoor lessons and adventure activities.

Visitors to the forest: Locals and people from different areas come and visit the forest to see the
plants, birds and other wildlife.

Local government: You want to make sure that local people have access to the area, but are also
aware of the need to have jobs and housing.

There are several possible solutions but you must decide which one is the best for the forest, and also
for the people living nearby.

Some solutions can be found on pages 18 and 19 of the textbook:

 Sustainable practices (replanting trees when they are chopped down)

 Targeting illegal logging
 Reforestation
 Greening of urban areas

Half the forest could be deforested and built upon; half could be left as it is.

Using the table below:

● Give each solution a score for each group: 1 being least favourite; 5 being the favourite.

 Explain why each group would have these views.

You then need to write a summary report of your findings for the people of the city.
In your summary report you must include the advantages and disadvantages of each solution. (This is
evaluation.)

You must also include your final decision and the reasons why you came to this decision.

How to write a report:

 State what the issue is.

 State what the options are.

 State which option you have chosen.

 Draw a table with the advantages and disadvantages of each option (evaluate).

 Give reasons (explain) why you have chosen this option.

 Give reasons why you didn’t choose the other options (evaluate).

Command terms:
Explain: Give a detailed account, including reasons or causes
Evaluate: Make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and weaknesses
