Trigonometry Lesson Plan G9-Q4

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a Grade 9 mathematics class on trigonometry. The objectives are for students to find the values of the six trigonometric functions of an acute angle in a right triangle using SOH-CAH-TOA. The lesson plan outlines the procedures which include a review of special right triangles, motivation through an interactive game, and presentation of the key concepts and examples to calculate trig functions using the sides of right triangles.

    A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics Grade 9 (Trigonometry)
I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students with 80% level of proficiency should be able to:

1. Find the value of the six trigonometric functions of the acute angle of a right
triangle and
2. Use the acronym SOH-CAH-TOA to get the values of each trigonometric
functions.
II. Subject Matter
a. Topic
Right Triangle Trigonometry
b. References
Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry and Statistics, pp. 210-212, Bernabe et.al.
Mathematics Learner’s Material Grade 9, pp. 430-434, Bryant et. al.
c. Materials
PowerPoint presentation, visual aids, chalk and board, meter stick, marker,
speaker and android phone.
d. Concepts
- From the right triangle perspective, the six trigonometric functions of the
acute angles of the right triangle can be defined.
- The three sides of a right triangle are the hypotenuse (c), the side opposite the
angle (a) and the side adjacent (b) to the angle θ .
e. Skills
Calculating and awareness
f. Values

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Daily Routine
a. Prayer

Class, let us pray

, lead the prayer
(A student will lead the prayer.)

Good morning, class!

Good morning, Ma’am!

b. Checking of Attendance

, is there any absent today?

(The attendance officer will answer.)

None, Ma’am.
Very Good!

1
c. Checking of Assignment

I had given you an assignment last

meeting, so pass it properly.
(The students will pass their papers properly.)

B. Review of the Past Lesson

Last meeting, we discussed the special
right triangles.
As a review, what are the two kinds of
special right triangles? The two kinds of special right triangles are
the 450-450-900 triangle and the 300-600-900
triangle.
Correct!
What are the characteristics of each
triangle? In a 450-450-900 triangle, the legs are
congruent and the length of the hypotenuse is
equal to the length of the leg time’s √2.
In 300-600-900 triangle, the hypotenuse is
equal to twice the length of the shorter leg and
the longer leg is equal to the shorter leg time’s
√3.
Very well said!
Do you have questions regarding our
previous lesson?
None, Ma’am.

C. Motivation

Before we start our lesson, let us play

first the “4 PICS 1 WORD”.
I will show you the pictures and if
somebody knows the answer, just simply raise
his/her hand to give the answer. If the answer is
correct, he/she will receive a prize.
Okay, let us start.
(a slide will be flash)
(The students will give their answers.)
1. RIGHT
2. TRIANGLE
3. TRIGONOMETRY

All answers are correct!

D. Presentation of the Lesson

Today, we are going to discuss the Right

Triangle Trigonometry.

E. Lesson Proper

2
Recall the six trigonometric functions.
What are those? The six trigonometric functions are the
sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and
cotangent.

Yes, how about the three sides of the

triangle? The three sides of the triangle are the
hypotenuse, side opposite the angle and the side
adjacent the angle.

Very Good!
How do we denote the different sides of
the triangle? Ma’am the hypotenuse is denoted by (c),
the side opposite the angle is denoted by (a), and
the side adjacent the angle is denoted by (b).

c
a

From the right triangle perspectives, the

six trigonometric functions of the acute angles
of the right triangle can be defined.
Using the lengths of these sides denoted
by a,b,c the six trigonometric ratios of the acute
angle θ are:
(slide presented)

opposite a
sinθ= =
hypotenuse c

adjacent b
cosθ= =
hypotenuse c

opposite a
tanθ= =
adjacent b

hypotenuse c
cscθ= =
opposite a

hypotenuse c
secθ= =
adjacent b

adjacent b
cotθ= =
opposite a

Examples:
1. Given the figure, find the six
trigonometric functions of the acute angle θ
3
c=5 a=4

b=3

a
Since we know that sinθ= , from the
c
a 4 c 5
figure who can give the value of sine function sinθ= = cscθ= =
c 5 a 4
as well as its reciprocal function?

b 3 c 5
Correct! cosθ= = secθ= =
c 5 b 3
How about cosθ and secθ ?

a 4 b 3
Very good! tanθ= = cotθ= =
a b 3 a 4
tanθ= , then what is the value of the tangent
b
function?

That’s also correct!

2. Find the value of the trigonometric

functions of the angle θ given that

5
sinθ=
13
a=5
c=13

θ
b=?

5
Given that sinθ= , therefore the
13
opposite side (a) and the hypotenuse (c) were
already given and the adjacent side (b) is
missing.

The Pythagorean theorem, Ma’am.

To find b, what theorem are we going to

use? b2=c2-a2

Exactly! And Pythagorean theorem

states that c2=a2+b2 therefore, how can we find
b?
