CHAPTER 1: THE BACKGROUND AND IT’S PROBLEM

Learning styles refers to the preferred ways in which individuals learn and process
information. These styles can manifest in a variety of ways, with visual, auditory, and
kinesthetic/tactile being some of the most common. It is essential to know and understand their
learning styles and routines to motivate and inspire working students.

The research includes the learning styles of the working students of PHINMA-Saint Jude
College. Students decide to work while they are in school. It has an effect on the respondents’
scholastic performance, and it may have a positive and negative impact.

Male and Female students have different ways to process information. Boys need an
active participation has been attributed to how their brains process information, and Girls enjoy
learning with varied strategies. There are over 70 different learning styles (Coffield, 2004) to
ascertain whether there is solid evidence to support the use of learning styles in training, in 2009,
Psychological Science in the Public Interest commissioned cognitive psychologists Harold
Pashler, Mark McDaniel, Doug Rohrer, and Robert Bjork to conduct a study on learning styles
their conclusion was: “Although the literature on learning styles is enormous,” they “found
virtually no evidence” supporting the idea that “instruction is best provided in a format that
matches the preference of the learner.” According to the study in Vanderbilt University, each of
us has our own unique set of learning styles and we learn the most if information is presented in
this learning style. Working students are most likely to build excellent study habits and routines
for them to adopt and fulfill their specific demands and time limits.

Students, who are employed, must develop study routines and learning methods that are
adapted to their specific needs and time availability, of different sex process information in
different ways. The outcome of the learning styles employed by working pupils thus relies on
their sex.
Background of the study

Students' study habits are one of the primary issues that teachers encounter. Schools are
looking for a way to enhance how to make their students be better at learning. According to
Cross (2019) the key issues of a student is how to improve his/her learning study style at present.
Students have individual techniques and learning styles that they practice for them to learn and
catch up easily. However, students are getting more flexible due to their financial situation
financially at the present time. Given working students have limited time to spend studying that
causes them to not focus while others can do so. Some working students have the same learning
style and that is Online Learning because they can combine studies with their jobs. This learning
style is not easy, but it makes their learning easier because they don't have to go to school to
learn, but they can learn online. But most of the working students can't handle this learning style
because they learn better when they are inside the school. While in college, working and
studying can be fulfilling and exhausting, at same time.

The percentage of college students who balance work and study are increasing. Over
time, there has been a significant increase in college. Over 70% of college students have worked
and studied concurrently for more than 25 years, according to a recent study by Georgetown
University's Center on Education and the Workforce. Additionally, according to the same source
(Rapacon CNBC. com, S. T., 2015), they work an average of 30 hours per week. Likewise,
according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, 79% of college students
worked while they were in school. To manage their busy schedules and maintain a healthy social
life, students need to be excellent time managers.

According to David Kolb, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western

Reserve University (1974) developed four learning styles that include perception and processing.
According to Kolb, learners perceive and process information in a continuum from concrete
experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. These
learning styles are the Diverger, Assimilator, Converger, and Accommodator. It states that every
student's learning styles significantly influenced their academic achievements. The Learning
styles theory based on Kolb’s Theory stated that perception and processing. According to Kolb,
learners perceive and process information in a continuum from concrete experience, reflective
observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. Not like other categories of
learning styles that focus only on environmental aspects of learning. The study dictated the
importance of the learning styles to students. Many working students established learning styles
that fit their time and schedule to both do well academically and their jobs.

Statement of the problem

Scope and Delimitation

This research scopes the Learning styles and routines of the grade 12 STEM working
students of PHINMA Saint Jude Colleges 2022-2023 S.Y. within our campus in Sampaloc,
Manila. The main point of the researcher is to gather information regarding their Learning styles
and routines. How different are the learning styles of the male and female working students to
one another? This research focuses on different learning methods to what the employed students
have.

For further clarification, the study only seeks to gather all of the possible respondents in
grade 12 STEM students. They were chosen as they are most likely to have a plentiful and
satisfactory number of respondents. And due to the amount of working students in PHINMA-
Saint Jude College, the main gathering data for the site will be held in PHINMA-Saint Jude
College. Not from the other part of Manila or schools within Metro Manila. The primary data
collection of this study shall be conducted through mixed face-to-face interviews and surveys on
the internet.
Significance of the Study

This study was conducted with the purpose of providing inspiration, information and
knowledge regarding the learning styles and routine from the respondent and the following will
benefit from this study.

Students - Students will gain most from this research because it will help them manage their
time, especially those who work jobs and study at the same time.

Parents - This study will be helpful to parents since it will lessen their suffering if their child
develops strong study habits, which is one of the things that will help them get their child
through school.

Researchers - The researcher is one of those who will benefit from this study because they can
use it as a reference and guide to do a research.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Working Student - Students who hold a full-time or part-time employment in addition to their
studies are referred to as working students. They are regular people without professional or very
lucrative employment.

Learning Style - A variety of ideas are referred to as having different learning styles in order to
explain how people learn differently. Despite the fact that there is a wealth of evidence
demonstrating that people have specific preferences regarding how they would like to receive
information.

Learning Routines - Learning routines are predetermined processes and behavioral patterns that
educate kids and then have them follow on a regular basis to complete various daily classroom
tasks.

Academic Performance - is the extent to which a student, teacher, or institution has attained
their short or long-term educational goals.

Study Habit - is an action such as reading, taking notes, holding study groups which the students
perform regularly and habitually in order to accomplish the task of learning.

Online Learning - is a method of education whereby students learn in a fully virtual

environment. Online learning, also called E-Learning online learning, first introduced in the
1990s with the creation of the internet.

Auditorial- is an audio editorial used by journalists to satirize a phrase, speech or statement

through an audio recording of the phrase, speech of statement.
Visual - is something such as a picture, diagram, or piece of film that is used to show or explain
something.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The researchers’ conducted research for the related literature and studies in several
libraries and web sites. Among the literature and studies that have relation or bearing to this
study are presented below and in the succeeding pages of this chapter.

Foreign Related Literature and Studies

According to John, Shahzadi, and Khan (2016) it encourages the successful learners to
use a variety of learning styles. So, students with a variety of learning styles are capable of
completing a variety of tasks successfully, including problem-solving and developing various
techniques. This means that if you have a particular learning style, you can complete various
tasks successfully. Other working students also study in different learning styles.

As stated by Azizifar and Gowhary (2015) Learning styles are said to play a significant
role in academic achievement and excellence. This means that having a learning style is
important because it will help you achieve your academic goals as well as the student who works
while studying. to understand how our learning style affects their academic performance while
you are a working student.

Learners' learning preferences, based on Gilakjani (2011), must be identified in order for
them to perform well in class. Their classroom performance is influenced by their learning style,
which is critical, to determine whether or not their learning style was effective. Learning style is
important, according to some working students. Learning styles assist working students in
managing their learning while attempting to maintain their grades.

According to the authority of Business Dictionary (2019), the term "learning styles"
refers to how each student learns. They process the information based on their understanding of
it. It is classified into three types: visual learners, who rely on the image being presented;
auditory learners, who rely on verbal and listening skills; and kinesthetic learners, who include
tactile learners. However, self-motivation has a significant impact on how children learn. It is the
ability to complete tasks independently of other people or circumstances. Notably, once
educators have identified and understood their students' learning styles, they will be able to
employ the best strategies in their daily activities. As a result, students will be able to identify
their strengths and weaknesses.

As stated by Hunt (1979) thought that learning style “describes a student in terms of
those educational conditions under which he is most likely to learn. Learning style describes how
a student learns, not what he has learned”.

As maintained by Tracey (2004: 670) time management is the art and science of using
time prudently and well to achieve personal, professional, career, and organizational goals and
objectives. It is the practical and effective system of taking the time to save time so that one can
do more of the things that have to be done and have time left over to do some of the things one
wants to do. It involves a systematic approach to the management of programs, projects,
activities, priorities, and schedules.

As claimed by Syahrir (2019) the male students preferred auditory learning style
because male students tended to enjoy and more actively learn by hearing music and short video
as learning media. On the other hand, female students preferred kinesthetic learning style
because they learn best by being involved physically in the classroom, such as learning by doing
and learning by using games. These styles of learning are affected by the notions of gender
differences in communication. This is accurate since different learning styles apply to working
students as well as other students and non-working individuals. It's not only about what they've
learnt; it's also about how they study and how other individuals have acquired knowledge in
accordance with their preferred method of learning.

Most working students and even some other people practice time management since it greatly
facilitates their ability to manage their time between employment and school. They must
properly manage their time if they are to make it to their class. Being able to manage your time
well is a major accomplishment since it allows you to organize your calendar and keep busy with
both work and school. Since time management also helps you know how much time you've
saved, practically all working students make good use of their time. While learning, both genders
are permitted to be present. Furthermore, both genders are female and male or even the other.
They learn more quickly when they're used to having a partner at their side, and it's also the best
way to study because your partner is also taking notes with you. Since you may assist one
another while learning, it's the ideal method of education.

According to Dundes and Marx, 2006; Butler, 2007 contend that if part-time workers
are able to effectively manage their time allocation, such as when substituting leisure for work,
their academic performance may not necessarily be lower than that of full-time students. Not all
working students will have lower grades because they combine studying with work than full-
time students; sometimes the grades of full-time students are even lower than working students
because the others do not know how to organize their time to combine studying with their other
hobbies, and they don’t have a proper learning style based on what Dundes and Marx (2006) and
Butler (2007) said. If we look at it, there are more working students who study hard than full-
time students, but if they have time management skills, they can study well because hobbies will
not be an obstacle to their studies. Most of the working students also choose to stop studying and
just work; that's what happens when they like the salary and just want to earn more. But we can't
blame them because maybe they need money more, so they stop studying and scavenge to earn
money and cover the shortages.

There are working students who continue to study hard and have a good learning style to
facilitate their studies while working because they know it will help them in their lives when they
graduate and find their desired job. All students work hard to raise their families out of poverty,
even though they are working, their studies are still their priority.

As mentioned, Students’ employment is increasing, (Buscha et al., 2012, Dustmann and

van Soest, 2007, Kalenkoski and Pabilonia, 2010) and capital theories predict that there’s some
positive relationship between working while studying because most of working student don’t
work for paying school fees anymore, but to gain experience, knowledge, and practice life skills
in working for the future. Students who don't have problems with school fees are already
working to earn their own money and to have knowledge of the jobs they will get when they
graduate. This will help you gain experience and give you the confidence to deal with other
people, especially if the jobs you will get in the future are supposed to be in public and you need
to communicate with people. But it is also not very helpful for students who really have
problems with school fees, because what if the accepted part-time students are those who just
want to have experience and not save money and pay for school? This is also one of the
problems faced by working students because others who want to work can afford to pay school
fees, and the student who needs money loses their spot in other jobs. It's also a good reason to
have experience, but what about students who really need money? And we all have our own
motivation to study, those who love their family and those who have their own dreams to achieve
their dreams.

As stated by Signaling Theory (Theune 2015, Darolia, 2014, Triventi, 2014, Body et
al. 2014, Avdic and Gartell, 2015, Wenz and Yu, 2010, Stinebrickner and Stinebrickner, 2013),
students' work experience can be seen as a strong signal of work motivation, due to the effort of
combining work and study. This is true, because there will be motivation not only at work but
also in other students who want to earn their own money and help their family pay school fees.
This helps to make other students want to study more because they know that what they earn is
for their studies. If students have a good learning style, it will help and motivate other students.
Students will be better able to study hard and develop time management skills. It is more helpful
for working students if they have their learning style because it will make their studies easier if
they know how and where they can study better. Even if the students are motivated, they still
cannot balance school, work and personal life. However, this is a new journey, and you are still
getting used to managing your time and obligations. Ride the waves of this journey and see each
storm as a chance to progress.

Local related Literature and Studies

As mentioned, Richard (2004) emphasizes the importance of student information.

However, it takes time to manage and is the most important tool to get used to helping
employees and students cope with work and study. Cambridge. The Student Information System
(CAMSIS) has replaced various student data systems. Used in colleges, departments and
universities. CAMSIS offers Comprehensive and accurate information about student bodies and
improves data quality, significantly reduces administrative overhead, and provides better service
for both faculty and students.

As stated by Jazelle Bantilan (2014) Student Employment is a very common practice in

the Philippines. With a significant portion of the student population engaging in part-time jobs, it
is not a surprise to find working students in a classroom, especially in colleges and universities.
They get employment from a variety of industries, mainly from food service, to sales and
entertainment, aside from the usual jobs such as student assistants. Due to financial obstacles, a
lot of college students try to juggle school and work, causing a variety of problems for them,
ranging from difficulties in time management, decline in school performance, health problems,
and to personal and social problems, part-time working students face a lot of challenges and
difficulties trying to balance both.

In Effect of the Learning Styles and multiple Intelligence on the achievement of the
Senior High School Students in The Division of City School (2003). Angela Muguit, a
researcher in Caloocan City conducted a study about the learning of the students that is based on
Kolb’s learning styles theory (1974). It dictated that every student's learning styles significantly
influenced their academic achievements. The Learning styles theory based on Kolb’s Theory
stated that perception and processing. According to Kolb, learners perceive and process
information in a continuum from concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract
conceptualization, and active experimentation. Not like other categories of learning styles that
focus only on environmental aspects of learning. Kolb developed four learning styles: the
Diverger, Assimilator, Converger, and Accommodator. In addition, according to Dalusong
(2003) as cited by Maguit (2003), age may have an influence on the students’ academic
performance; He found out that the older technicians had a higher level of performance than the
younger ones in an old farm management. Thus, there is a significant relationship between age
and job performance regardless of the job.
Muguit study clearly stated the importance of the learning styles to students. Many
working students established learning styles that fit their time and schedule to both do good
academically and in their jobs. This research studies working students’ learning styles. As
employed students are most likely to establish an excellence study habit.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

3.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter explains various methodologies used in gathering data and analysis which is
relevant to the research. The methodologies include the research design/structure, population
research, population research sample and sampling method, research methodology, data
collection method, library research, field research, analysis of the qualitative data, and
conclusion.

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN/STRUCTURE

In this study, the researchers used qualitative research design to analyze information about
working student’s real-world experiences. Qualitative research is used to capture eloquent
information regarding ideas, values, beliefs, and motivations that underpin behaviors that aren't
conveyed in quantitative research. As for that, the qualitative research design is very suitable for
this study since this research is about the personal learning preference of the respondents. The
researcher would collect the respondents' personal information and their individual preferences.

This research aims to discern the real-life experiences of the respondents to get knowledge
about the challenges of working students in their studies, to get an insight into their learning
habits and routines. To perceive the relationship of gender and age in students' learning
preferences, the study will differentiate the relation between the age and gender of respondents to
their individual learning styles and to know how employed students’ learning styles affect their
studies.

For this study, the researcher used a method interview. The interview intends to recognize
working students' favored learning habits that they used daily and/or when they study for the test
to do that the researcher collected the names of the students that are employed in every section
under the strand of STEM visited. The researcher collected the names of the students who
wanted to participate in the study. After gathering the respondents’ information, the researcher
would proceed to hold an interview through messenger, message, and video calls. And ask
questions about their personal learning habits and how it affects their scholastic achievements.

The study would be conducted among the students that are currently employed in every
section of grade 11 STEM at PHINMA-Saint Jude College.
3.3 POPULATION, RESEARCH SAMPLE AND SAMPLING METHOD

Nikolopoulou described populations in a study as the selected units for inclusion in the
sample as they are the easiest for the researchers to acquire data.

Population is acknowledged as the selected set group of people or pool of individuals which are
drawn to the researchers' study.

Therefore, for this study, the population from which the samples were conducted

Consists of the following set of respondents/interviewees:

a.) Working male and female grade 11-STEM students;

b.) Age group of the participants (Working Grade 11-STEM Students')

In this study, the researchers' applied the convenience sampling method for the selection
of the participants. Convenience sampling refers to the pre-existing group as the chosen sample
in accordance with the need of the study. It means that the interviewees' have indicated their
willingness to participate in the study. In addition, this strategy enables the researcher to collect
relevant and useful information for answering the research question interview was conducted
however there are a number of respondents being interviewed online via email and phone calls
due to hectic scheduling.
3.4 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The case study approach was used to conduct this qualitative research. It allows you to
discover everything you want to know. The introspective mode of inquiry aims to comprehend
the situation at PHINMA Saint Jude College, working students occurred in grade 11 STEM
students.

We interview them through social media and ask them questions. These are the kind of interview
questions that call for telling their style and experiences. It’s utilized to distinguish between
qualities, experience, or respondent opinions. These students were asked a series of opinion
questions about their understanding of how grade 11 working students affect their performance
at school. They were questioned whether how can they manage their time while working at the
same time studying, what is their inspirations for doing both, what study habits help them to
focus on their studies, what are challenges they have been facing as a working student, are they
prepared of the outcomes of their decisions if they are not working student, what will happen to
them if they did not work, and if they have been encountered a working student like them, what
will be their advice to that person. Using the interview, we asked them through the Internet or on
social media.

3.4.1 DATA COLLECTION METHOD

Methods of data collection were carried out through online platforms specifically via
messenger live chat. The researcher prepared five questionnaires that are not answerable by yes
or no yet it is a composition of questionnaires that respondents will interactively answer the
questionnaire by allowing the researcher to ask follow-up questions. Therefore, the researcher
will collect the ideas, information, and insights of the respondents about the objectives of the
study.
3.4.1.1 LIBRARY RESEARCH

Angela Maguit is a researcher who conducted a study on student’s learning based on Kolb’s
learning styles 1974. It dictates that all student’s learning styles have a significant influence on
their academic success. There are four learning styles that Kolb’s developed, Diverging,
Assimilator, Converging and Accommodating. According to Kolb's studies, he saw a process of
information in a continuum from concrete experiences, reflective observations, abstract
conceptualizations and active experiments that are not like other styles of learning categories that
only focus on environmental aspects of learning.

3.4.1.2 FIELD RESEARCH

 INTERVIEW

An interview involves gathering data through a conversation between the interviewer and
the interviewee. It is a widely used method in social sciences and is particularly useful in
qualitative research as it allows for in-depth exploration of a particular topic. Through
interviews, researchers can gain access to the interviewee's thoughts, opinions, experiences, and
perspectives, as well as their attitudes and behaviors towards a particular phenomenon or issue.
Interviews can be conducted in various ways, from structured to unstructured, and can be
administered face-to-face, over the phone, or online. The data collected from interviews can be
analyzed using various techniques such as thematic analysis, content analysis, and discourse
analysis. Interviews are a powerful tool for researchers to generate rich and detailed data that can
offer valuable insights into a particular research question or topic.

3.5 CONCLUSION

Based on the findings, the study revealed that learning style and routine play a big role in their
studies and work because it is one of the things that will help them to be flexible and manage
their time at the same time lack of effective learning style will lead to different and major
problems that cause them to choose not to study and choose to just work.
CHAPTER 4: PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

4.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter reviews the results and analysis of the qualitative data, the compilation of the
questionnaire, and the results and analysis of the quantitative findings of the study. As the cost of
education continues to rise, more students are finding it necessary to work while studying.
Working while pursuing an education can be a challenging task that requires a lot of time
management and discipline. We surveyed 10 respondents, 2 of whom were girls and 8 were men,
to get an insight into their experiences as working students. The survey revealed that many
students face problems with managing their time, while others seem to excel in balancing their
work and academic responsibilities. In this research, we will examine the survey results and
explore the different approaches that working students does to manage their time effectively and
achieve academic success. It is also a comprehensive description of the research methodology
was given in Chapter 3.
4.2 DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE INTERVIEWEES

Of the total of 10 respondents, 2 were girls and 8 were men, most of the respondents’
answers is having a problem with their time management and some of the respondents said that
they are doing just fine. Most of them struggle with their allowance and combining study with
work.

Male 9 16-20

This table shows the categories of respondents who were interviewed. The jobs of
each student have the same and different experiences. The number of respondents in the table
shows the gender and the age of the correspondents. The researchers discovered that the students
they interviewed still prioritize their studies over work. Most of them have the same responses to
the questions and studies over work. Most of them have the same response to the questions, and
we notice that each of them can't manage their time between school and work; sometimes they
multitask to manage their time.

Informant interviews are qualitative interviews with people who are informed about the
local community, according to UCLA (n.d.). This is being done to gather data from the populace.
The participants in this study were interviewed, and detailed explanations of their responses were
given. We used a qualitative approach and individually questioned each participant, allowing us
to collect complete and accurate data from our responses. As a result, getting knowledge is also
made easy for us.
4.3 RESEARCH FINDINGS

4.4 RESEARCH ANALYSIS

Introduction

This part of the research analyzes the data based on the researchers’ findings of the
research study. The researchers would evaluate the student’s learning styles based on their
answers to the questions provided by the researchers. The researcher will also provide questions
regarding how working students’ jobs affects their academic performances.

Analysis of the learning styles of the working student in STEM Grade 11 at PHINMA-
Saint Jude College

The interview shows that the employed grade 11 STEM students of PHINMA-Saint Jude
College have their ways of studying. In one of the interviews, one of the respondents mentioned
that his ways of studying rely on the environment where he will study.
He stated:

“Find a good place to study. Minimize distractions. Take breaks. Set study goals for
each session”

Most of respondent replies are about setting a great environment for them to study
without any unnecessary distractions in terms of sound and interruptions. When we asked about
how a working student study for a test, a respondent said:

“I review course materials, then make study guides, practice with practice questions, and ask
for assistance when necessary to get ready for a test.”

Analysis of how working students' learning style affect their academic performance

In the interview, it was mentioned that a few of the respondents manage their time well.
They balance their work, and school life well. Though, some of the respondents said that they
don’t study outside the school most of the time because they were struggling with their time
management. It was stated of one of the respondents:

“As working students, I’m really struggling with time management. there is a double task
that I need to do, so it is really difficult to do. like what I need to do in every morning with the
household chores then in the evening I have to do school tasks.”

Some employed students manage their time well but most don’t.
4.5 CONCLUSION

The results show that working while studying is the hardest part of being a working student, but
there is no other time to manage their time because of so much work they do. Sometimes, their
time is split because of the many tasks they need to accomplish, such as house chores,
schoolwork, and work. They find it hard to manage their time because it is difficult for them to
juggle their jobs and school. But on the other hand, making a to-do list is a big help for them to
manage their time while working. Experiencing tiredness while working is hard to deal with, but
when you have time management, you can easily achieve what you want for the goods. It's a big
help for the other working students to have a time management system to track their time. If
listening to music helps you focus on your studies, it can also help you do your work while
studying because it can help you focus on what you're doing. The result of the interview shows
that they are having a hard time managing their time because of a lack of time. However, they
are still in the process of managing their time by making a to-do list. Doing this can help us find
what we should improve on, to cope with the class session.
