Assignment 1-BS-ME07

This document is an assignment for a Mechanical Behavior of Materials course consisting of 3 questions regarding material properties and behavior. Question 1 involves analyzing a stress-strain curve to determine properties of an aluminum-killed steel alloy and assessing its suitability for automotive applications. Question 2 involves recommending materials for tennis rackets, golf clubs, and analyzing elastic-plastic deformation of rubber specimens. Question 3 discusses the difference between modulus of resilience and toughness, calculating these properties, and explaining why rubber has high resilience while ceramics have low resilience.

Session: Spring 2023 Assessment: Assignment-1 Prepared by: Mateenullah

Max Marks: 30 Assign Date: 21/03/2023 Due/Submission Date: 05/04/2023

Note: - All questions are compulsory

- All Questions carry equal marks

Question # 1:

The plot below of load vs. extension was obtained using a specimen (shown in the following
figure) of an alloy remarkably like the aluminum-killed steel. The crosshead speed, v, was 3.3x10 -
4
inch/second. The extension was measured using a 2" extensometer as shown (G). Eight points
on the plastic part of the curve have been digitized for you. Use these points to help answer the
following questions.
(a) Determine the following quantities. Do not neglect to include proper units in your answer.
(10)
i. Yield stress
ii. Young's Modulus
iii. Ultimate tensile strength
iv. Total elongation
v. Uniform elongation
vi. Post-uniform elongation
vii. Engineering strain rate
(b) Construct a table with the following headings, left-to-right: Extension, load, engineering
strain, engineering stress, true strain, true stress. Fill in the table against all the eight
extension points on graph. What is the percentage difference between true and engineering
strains for the first point? What is the percentage difference between true and engineering
strains for the last point? (10)
(c) Plot the engineering and true stress-strain curves on a single graph using the same units.
(5)
(d) *Identify whether this material is eligible for the application in the automotive fenders,
hoods, etc.? Justify your answer.

Question # 2:

(e) Describe the mechanical properties that are desired in a tennis (i) racket and (ii) golf club.
Recommend different materials for the different parts in each case and justify your
answer.
(f) Rubber specimens, having an initial length of 5 cm, are tested, one in compression and
one in tension. If the engineering strains are −1.5 and +1.5, respectively, apply the concept
of elastic-plastic deformation and determine the following: (i) final lengths of the
specimens, (ii) true strains, and justify the answer that why are they numerically different?
Question # 3:

(a) What is the difference between modulus of resilience and toughness of a material? How
do we calculate these properties and show its graphical representation?
(b) Rubber is an example of a material that has an extremely high modulus of resilience.
Ceramics typically have a very low modulus of resilience. However, the modulus of
elasticity of ceramics is high while rubber have relatively low value. Justify this behavior
and explain which material is preferable for the manufacturing of spring and why?
